As the title suggests, I currently carry some debt—part of which was a personal choice, and part of which arose from unavoidable circumstances. Specifically, I have a home mortgage, an auto loan, and approximately $17,000 in credit card debt incurred due to unexpected expenses related to a home emergency, veterinary care for my dog, and costs associated with my father’s funeral.
Would this level of debt be considered disqualifying? the base pay from the department is sufficient to cover all my monthly obligations, with approximately $1,500 remaining after expenses

The debt question (in my experience and from what I’ve been told) is to see how you respond to inquiries during the interview. Do you have a clear “plan of attack”, do you make your payments on time, is it crippling (a corruption point) etc etc
Debt varies by department with some being strict and others not even checking. It sounds like your debt comes from responsible choices and not frivolous spending. As long as you’re making payments, managing it, and your payments to income are reasonable I don’t see it being a problem generally.
