Context is that I saw this interesting shirt that says Illinois on one side and I liked the colors. I didn’t know what it was at first but later I found out is some kind of baseball shirt. But still I like the colors. I’m not a sports fan I know very little about baseball. But rarely something like that catches my eyes. For reference I’m 31M. I don’t want to upset sports fans or anything. And the shirt is from Walmart. But it looked interesting.
Can a person wear a baseball shirt even if they are not sports fans or know of the team but like the shirt colors and material?

A person can wear whatever they want.
Yes, but people might think you’re a fan.
Yes, obviously.
Of course you “can” do that, but, it is a little strange to wear a sports team’s shirt if you know nothing about them, and/or are not from where they are located. You’ll probably have Illinois fans walk up to you excited, then disappoint them.
Wear whatever you want. But perhaps you could at least spend five minutes on Google learning about what you are wearing if there are visible logos.
Isn’t Illinois also a state in the US?
I doubt there would ever be any problems. I mean, someone who is actually a fan might try to talk to you about the team (I’m guessing it’s referring to the University of Illinois; not sure of any other sports teams that might have “Illinois” on their uniforms) and that might be a bit awkward.
But other than that, no one would ever care. Especially if you live in Illinois, it is likely *expected* that you wear some University gear. Like here in Ohio, no one would question for a second if someone was wearing Buckeyes clothing.
There’s a joke often made about people getting mad when they see an obvious “poser” wearing a band shirt (like, “You can’t even name 5 Nirvana songs. You can’t wear that Nirvana shirt!”) and perhaps there are some unhinged people out there that would do the same for a sports team shirt, but I seriously doubt it.
Be prepared to have some white guy excitedly know a lot about it and be prepared to see the light fade from his eyes when you tell him you just like it for fashion
I wore an AC/DC shirt cuz it was on sale for like 5 dollars ask me to name a song
You’ll always upset someone, even if you knew the team and supported them, you’d upset someone for wearing it. Do what you like and a person’s emotions are their own responsibility.
I have a Boston Red Sox shirt with just their “B” logo my husband got me when he went to a game. I don’t care about any baseball team, but I like the shirt and our last name begins with a “B.” My city LOOOOVES our baseball team and no one has ever remarked on my shirt.
Yes. I don’t do that but I did do that. Let me explain.
Growing up until now I have a habit of just borrowing people’s hats and just rocking that shit. Lots of baseball caps, snap backs, and a few strawhats. More than a few times the hats had logos on them. So I have had comments from are you Filipino? To wait til the Cubs fuck up the Padres. All because of the different logos on the hat. No I am not Filipino nor do I care about baseball lol.
Wear whatever the hell you want if you like it.
I mean you can wear what you want. But as a sports guy, this seems inappropriate. Not on a major level or anything, but I would expect you to at least be a fan of that team and know something about them. For a sports guy, wearing your team puts you in a group, a club, fans of the team all with the same goals for the team which is to be successful. We proudly display our fandom and our loyalty to our team by wearing their colors. So to wear them and not be a fan seems weird to me. Again, this is not a major social injustice. But from a sports fans perspective, it’s strange to us.
Believe it or not, straight to jail.
Pretty sure those shirts have specific codes on them that only the fans know. So you can’t put them on unless you know that code.
