My pastor told me that my dad abusing me was my fault

I grew up in a religious family that went to church every Sunday. I also had a dad with a bad temper and an alcohol problem. There was this one time (I was about 12) when I spoke with my pastor about my dad’s physical violence towards me and he told me that I needed to stop doing things that set him off. The things about my dad is that you’d never know what set him off. I haven’t seen my dad in years but that pastor’s words stuck with me.
