I can afford to rent but can’t afford a mortgage… for the same amount. 🫠

I’ve heard about this being a thing for people are trying to buy their first home, but I just find it stupid after meeting with a mortgage broker.

I’ve been constantly putting aside money into savings and investments. I find that’s it’s not worth renting cause that money could be a down payment, or practically the same amount or more than a mortgage.

I also live with my parents, but it’s getting to a point where i feel like I’m going crazy working full-time, remotely in my bedroom all the time. My parents also don’t understand boundaries when I’m busy working— especially, my Dad. They always need me to do tech stuff and my dad gets angry if I don’t drop everything to help them. I tried teaching and making notes, but they admitted that they don’t want to do it themselves.

I also can’t cook without my mom judging me or taking over, and can’t even unwind and watch tv with them cause they’re on their phones with TikTok blasting from my dads phone (he refuses to wear headphones), and my mom watching Instagram reels on hers.

Sleep is also an issue cause my dad sleeps in a spare room beside mine, and he refuses to wear his CPAP machine. All I hear is him snoring loudly and I can’t fall asleep. Even if I wake him, he falls right back asleep or sometimes he’s in such deep sleep he won’t wake up when I shake him.

Just multiple conundrums/ ridiculous things in my mind these past several months. I even just had a blood test done and I’m close to being pre-diabetic… so that’s the cherry on top of today’s events.

It’s pretty wild right now. Rent in my area is often 20% higher than a mortgage for a similar home, even with the crumby interest rates we have at the moment.

Bro you sound EXACTLY like me a little over a year ago. I got a great paying job and was still living at my parents, my mom works from home and 2 hours before my tour of duty so i was always woken up by her. Then at night my father who refuses to wear his CPAP machine kept me up from his snoring. I would wear my beats headphones to sleep. I got a promotion and was more than comfortable to go out on my own.

I said “one more boundary pushed, I’m out” and the. It happened. Life is so much more peaceful in my own shit 💯 i would NEVER go back 😂. I still save for a home it’s just going to take a little longer. I don’t regret it for a second. I recommend for you to get an apartment that you could pay rent and utilities with one check and hopefully have a little left over so you could still save and have fun.

Try looking in a rural area, usually lower taxes and you might be able to get it with a USDA loan for a lower down payment. Houses around my go for $140-350 and a nearby town is easily $300 for the same $140 house in my town.
