Just read a post on hypotheticals, and someone mentioned dog shit turning white. I seem to remember seeing that as a kid, but 30 years later… I can’t recall seeing white crap.
I live in Eastern Europe, and we have a lot of turds that hang out through winter and such. I’ve also walked my 13-years old pup through the same fields consistently, and haven’t seen white shit on aged turds.

This is a good question. I also recall seeing dog shit turned white as a youngster, but alas never in recent times. I should get a ball cap that says “Make dog shit white again!”
My understanding is that things like egg shells and bone dust used to be used in dog food, and the calcium from that would make the dog poo turn white.
Poop turning white = too much calcium. Dog food back in the day had stuff like a lot of bonemeal used as filler.
They used to put a ton of bonemeal in dog food which made it turn white when it dried out. It wasn’t great for the dogs but it was cheap to produce.

It’s a sign of better hygiene. My little kitten was a deeply elderly cat and died four months ago after a long battle. Our back porch is maybe 80% his turds by cm^3. The really old dry ones? They are white!
We just don’t let shit fester in public areas like that anymore.

Commercial dog food used to be mostly bone meal. Poop came out brown but turned white as it weathered.

It only turns out when I give my dog a real cow bone, maybe once a year.
After all of the snow in my back yard melts after a long winter, the first thing I do is go pick up the dog shit that accumulated over the wi ter months.
