His family had a tradition of betrothing and marrying the firstborn in each generation to a specific tree, to symbolise their commitment and loyalty to the trees. This guy did not understand it was a metaphor.
Since the firstborn would then also marry another elf and procreate, polygamy was fine. He lived happily ever after with his two tree spouses, plus the peasant he married because we accidentally got her husband killed in a war we started. She was pregnant and the elf was not interested in non-tree relationships, so he just married her and they raised her child as his heir.
The peasant was a kind of Gytha Ogg/Mary from Ghosts type, who had a lot of fun being rich and going to fancy Elf parties. She was the most high status wife, so they weren’t allowed to be mean to her.

That’s not just cheating, that’s tree-son!
(I may have just lost my casual conversation privileges with that)
