My closest friends I met through boardgames. Generally they, we, are quite intelligent but past that there’s not much in common. At our weekly game night, our host is about to become CEO of a group of a dozen secondary schools, whilst another mate just shaved the sides of his head to look even more like the viking he wishes he was.

I do not have a social group. I have one friend who lives in another country, and my wife

  4. Jesta914630114 Avatar

Married dads that ride motorcycles… Only guys I have enough in common with. I can’t hang out and golf.

  5. Ragnoid Avatar

Well there’s this one guy from high school. That’s it.

I’m 41 and have quite a few friends. Most of them through tabletop games (especially RPGs), but also have an online late night crew where we play games, watch movies together on discord, even do special event nights for some sports and wrestling.

I also have a couple of buds that are into brewing and woodworking, so they come over to do that here as well.

My main group is pretty balanced in terms of introvert v. extrovert. In general, we’re loud, easy going, light hearted. We don’t really do pranks or have cool nicknames. A few of us golf together. Besides that, we all drink (sometimes heavily). Most of us are competitive enough to make drinking games fun. Shared sense of humor is juvenile, self deprecating. No complicated wordplay or anything like that. They’re my childhood friends and I met them through family and church.

Other friends I hang out with are usually a bit more reserved, people I know from college. Golf is still a common shared hobby. Humor is usually more elevated. They also like pop culture, bar trivia and escape rooms.

  8. blindside1 Avatar

Most of my friends are from my martial arts groups.

So most of our time involves training or punching each other in the face or hitting each other with a stick or sword.

How would describe the group? Maybe “prepper martial arts nerds.” Mostly dads, mostly older, lots of guys who are relatively successful in their careers.

The shared sense of humor is generally sarcastic but supportive.

God there’s like three social groups and like 15-20 people to describe. Despite not listing it next to all of them, they’re all kind and caring people.

Group 1. Do all sorts of fun shenanigans and parties and hangouts and gatherings and beach days, etc together.

    • wacky, fun, silly, spontaneous, flaky.
    • awkward, fun, loves hosting things, not flaky, loves plans, creative
    • great singer, reserved, turtle, fun when out of shell
    • passionate, talkative, fluctuates, creative
    • the mum of the group
    • high social energy but runs out of charge quick, spontaneous, wild at times, loves staying home, pet person, intelligent
    • the one who keeps bringing people into the group, never ending social battery, the most social person ever
    • an adventurous one, cool tattooed, kinda awkward, but is likely to go off overseas alone to some Asian country suddenly to motorbike around
    • big, friendly, giant nerd, always keen to hang out and help, big loveable smile. Keeps plans but happy to go with the flow
    • kind, adventurous, reserved, funny, cares a lot, very smart, curious
    • hyper intelligent, musical, adventurous, plans a lot, stresses a lot, curious

Next, group 2 – all are nerds, all are caring and kind, the first three very smart, fifth kinda average intelligence. Play board or video games together primarily.

    • Dad of the group, caring, organising, meets life goals, reserved, hard working,
    • responsible one, hard worker, diligent, a bit less reserved than the others, chill
    • hardcore gamer, reserved, curious, passionate
    • super chill, family man, curious, flaky, caring, loveable
    • adventurous, traveller, gamer, lazy worker

And these next ones aren’t in any particular group, they float between with me and more hang out one on one with me. Go for walks, go to the park, play video games, go for runs etc.

    • kind, caring, strong, intelligent, planner, excellent communicator, turns into a hermit for 6 months a year
    • planner, troubled, motivated, fluctuates in happiness, fun, doesn’t give themself enough credit for achievements, is a bad breeze away from running away from their life to start a new one at any given moment
    • socially anxious, life of the party, low social battery, awesome, fun, kind, nerd, troubled

The closest ones whom I love are analytical/leadership types.

My drinking buddies or having fun events pals are amicable and extroverted types

  11. jlusedude Avatar

I have a few friends that vary. We share some common themes. Like to hike or be outside, enjoy each others company, just get along well, video games, general stuff

  12. PrebenBlisvom Avatar

5-10 friends from we were to young. We do sports, museums, dinners , meet at cafees and talk about our divorces.

    We met at highschool/university

  13. SpoogeBobStaindPants Avatar

All types of personalities. We drink together. Met them through friends and just keep blending friend groups and growing the gang. I have a pub in my basement. 🍻

  14. travelnman85 Avatar

    My wife’s friends’ husbands.

  15. AimlessSnowFox Avatar

The commonality we all have is we are all strange or abnormal. The rejects, the nerds, the dorks, the loners, the ones picked last for sports, the outcasts, the non-straights(though we have a few in our ranks now) the foreigners, etc etc. it’s a 50/50 split men and women, with a good number of married couples in the mix.

Our interests are as varied as our group is diverse. Car things, motorcycles, DnD and table top games, disc golf, hiking, camping, surfing, skating, sometimes just hanging out and talking about life over beers, visiting a museum…if someone suggests something we all try and join in.

A lot of our humour is dark, a lot of it is also overly sexual. If you can make it a sex pun, someone’s going to, so you might as well beat them to punch when you can.

How we all met ? School, college, on the job, local get togethers for like minded liberal people, some are people I dated, some are people my fiance dated, even my ex wife shows up from time to time…we’ve even scraped hook up sites to recruit people for board games.

It’s a very eclectic and special group.

All guys married with kids. Most of us play golf together. The wives hangout and get drinks on occasion.

  19. kn0wph33r Avatar

Wide range. General categories are my cycling/skiing friends, my married with kids friends who I sometimes grab dinner/bbq with, and my gaming friends who I don’t see often in person but hang out a few nights a week playing video games.

    You guys have social groups?

  21. aderosa78 Avatar

My high school friends and i are still tight and when we joke around still pretty much feels the same way we did when we were 16. We are 32-33 now and no ones crushing it but no ones a loser so i find it to be a healthy balance (still immature but all have stable respectable careers). We try to get lunch like once every other month or so to hang. All used to party pretty hard but thats slowly chilled out due to marriage and kids etc. have a fantasy football league which provides a lot to talk about and keep in touch.

  22. darthsmolin Avatar

It’s been mostly other parents, neighbors, and bandmates for me. We jam, shoot the breeze, cook, and do shared activities with our kids or dogs. My family and I moved to a new town a couple years ago, so it’s been a good way to reset our social circle. My wife and I are usually the ones initiating and facilitating hangs. It’s not always easy but it’s often fun.

I have 3 more close friends, 5 close cousins (I classify them separately but they are my friends) with about a dozen regular-strength friendships and many friends of the family, but they all live far away. That’s no problem because I maintain regular phone calls and texting correspondence.

I have lots of friends because I have deliberately chosen to have many. I learned, shortly after graduating from college, that the number one thing that determines your happiness in life is the strength and quality of the connections you form with other people. After this epiphany, I scrambled to reestablish connections with some friendships that had atrophied. I try and talk to one person on the phone a week. As a millennial, I was raised by texting, but phone calls are so much more joyful. You can really exchange emotion in a pleasant manner with your voice.

I’m a big birthday person; I have an app on my phone that saves everyone’s birthdays so I don’t need to memorize them all. My friends and family are all very kind. I actually had to drop a childhood friend because it took me decades to learn he was always an asshole who always cared about me much less than I cared about him. So now I’m only friends with kind and laid back people. They are decent and educated people.

If you don’t have a lot of friends, remember it’s never too late to get new ones! Reestablishing old friendships worked for me. And don’t forget family members too. I love my cousins!

  24. SlimRoTTn Avatar

Not really friends, but my buddies are all married and we have sports in common.

    What social group?

  26. internet_observer Avatar

We’re all weird, most are extremely active, and most are creative. I met most through circus related performing arts. I also maintain many of the friendships I made in high school as well.

  27. Tossaway198832 Avatar

My wife, A 3 year old and a 1 year old.

They’re cool for the most part. We do family shit.

I see friends like 3 times a year and live like 900 miles away.

I just run and bike a lot when I have free time

  28. orlybatman Avatar

Creative types who enjoy artwork, music, the outdoors, and quiet gatherings.

Very kind, gentle people who try to make their way through life as peacefully as possible, and who value nature and the environment. They’re all very thoughtful and make you feel valued.

They don’t have strong senses of humor, but when they joke around it’s often absurdist humor.

I met almost all of them through various work opportunities – either theirs or mine.

  29. Jesssica_Rabbi Avatar

My social group consists of people who are thoughtful, self aware, kind, growth focused, and genuine. I found these kings of people by being that kind of person myself. You attract people into your life based on who you are. If you are genuine, you will attract genuine people.

At this age, I hardly have a friend group that has any regular meet ups. I have probably 3 guy friends that I see rarely, but consider the closest. I keep my friend group small. I have picked the most worthwhile friends to keep in touch with. Humor is usually in the moment. It’s hard because being an adult has sorta taken some of the humor from all of us. High school and college were the fun times for sure.

One is somewhat of a gear head and always has a dream to fix and drive one of at least three vehicles he owns. It has been years and has never been able to commit to any one build. He’s pretty light hearted though and enjoys chilling and video games. Overall a good guy though. Wouldn’t go out of his way to hurt anyone. Right wing. Blue collar. Known since elementary school.

Friend 2 is also a good guy at heart. We met in elementary school. Doesn’t mind putting down a few drinks at parties. Has a tendency to be a little on the goofy side. Is still the same person despite 10-20 years have gone by.

Friend 3 I met through work. HARD worker, super reliable and trustworthy. Dude is honest and does good for those round him. Has overcome family trouble like crazy and has really ended up on top. Probably the person that I would talk to if I was having some issues.

I think all of my friends above like video games to some extent. All would enjoy paintballing. One would ski if he could commit. All like ATVs.

I do have one other friend. I determined that it’s probably best we don’t talk so much while she’s in a relationship. It just makes her life more complicated and puts unneeded stress on her partner. BUT I 100% know that if I really needed to talk, she’d be there to talk. She’s witty and sarcastic. She tells you what she means and doesn’t try and sugar coat stuff. She will call you out for sure. Likes movies and shows. Working out / running. We were avid coffee enjoyers at one point. Likes pets. Definitely a DIY person. Spent three years building a really solid friendship.

All kinds. I’ve got hardcore liberals and hardcore republicans in the same group. Ultimately we all bond over our love of sports and that’s led to love for each other.

  32. surfinn_socal Avatar

    Social group? What is that?

  33. Legal_Delay_7264 Avatar

Friends from uni,  friends from volunteer organisations,  ‘friends’ from work,  a few mums I met through their partners. We either meet through the activities we first met through,  or planned catchups.

  34. whiskeybridge Avatar

i collect people. i’m the hub of various groups. plus my wife is gregarious and outgoing, and finds people she likes and makes plans with them sometimes.

personalities vary, but i try to keep only good people.

we travel with some folks. dinner parties are common in our set. we’re having our annual easter gathering this weekend. movies, volunteering, axe throwing, putt putt, beach or nature hangouts, birthday celebrations, life events, you name it.

i’d say our humor is…wide. we love to laugh, and nothing is sacred.

school, work, volunteering, bars, friends-of-friends, ex-lovers. just life, i guess.

  35. StuffyWuffyMuffy Avatar

Friend group 1) A bunch of autistic dorks who like play magic, d&d and 40k. We meet in trade school

Friend group 2) A bunch Mexican welders who I work with. They’re pretty chill working class folks. We like to go to bars, nice restaurants and the shooting range.

Friendish group 3) A bunch of history needs and martial artists who practiced fencing (italian longsword). Mostly left leaning college educated folks who are unbelievably patient. Hopefully, this becomes my 3rd space and they become better friends.

If you want a good life, diversify your friend groups.

  36. exploradorobservador Avatar

HS friends and nerds I’ve met doing nerd stuff.

  37. Wolf_E_13 Avatar

My social group in my mid to late 20s was pretty big. I couldn’t really tell you what their personalities were because they pretty much ran the gambit. Mostly we all just hung out, drank beer, smoked weed, played Frisbee, and went hiking.

My social group shrunk slowly but surely in my 30s with me getting married and then others getting married and those people having kids and then us having kids and the big pow wow of young adulthood coming to and end.

At 50 I have 3 people that I consider my good friends and I’ve known all three for at least 25 years; everyone else has dropped off. We’re all busy professionals and family men who are busy going to soccer games and practices and helping with school projects, etc. We see each other maybe once per month for breakfast or lunch or to grab a beer…occasionally all of a couple of us will go mountain biking or hiking or hit the golf course.

My best friend is a diagnosed (though effectively medicated) sociopath. Brilliant, manipulative, and incredibly judgemental. but we just play videogames, discuss work, drink beer, and are always there for each other, with absolutely no cost being too high. Not sure why we click, we just do.

My girlfriend is a train wreck and we’re on the decline.

    That’s uh.

That’s it outside of coworkers. I enjoy solitude, art, games, working out, and learning.
