I’ve been told that a hangover is just dehydration because alcohol is a diuretic, so if i just drank a shit ton of water, while also drinking a shit ton of alcohol, would I get a lessened/no hangover?
Yes, I am legal to drink, I just don’t do it very often, so I’m sorry if this sounds like a stupid person drinking for the first time.
Comments
Drink before and after. Also liquid IVs
It would just take longer to get drunk, and you’d be less drunk
Yes, drinking water is the key. You may prevent a hangover altogether, or you may just lessen it – it can be different for everyone – but water is absolutely the way to go.
No
Drinking water will definitely help, but overall, alcohol is a toxin to your body (“intoxicated”). After a certain amount, a hangover is inevitable; the severity of it can be mitigated by staying hydrated but not completely eliminated.
You will get super drunk even if you drink small glass of water after every alcoholic drink. Then when going to bed have ibuprofen.
When I was a teenager my biathlon coach told me to hydrate for tomorrow, and I used that advice for drinking… I still do not get any headache or anything from drinking lol
Lots of water and salt
Yes, it’s easy!
Step one: Be genetically blessed
Step two: Be under 25
Those are the only options. If you’re a normal, over 25-year-old person there is no way to get super drunk without being hungover. Everyone who claims to have the cure is either younger, or isn’t getting super drunk. You can drink a gallon of water, take all the hangover aids you want, eat bananas, whatever, to mitigate the hangover. But that hangover is still coming.
This is just my experience, so it might not work for you, but I recommend staying awake for a few hours after the last drink. If you give your body some time to process the alcohol while you’re awake (and eat plenty during this period) then that can reduce the worst of the hangover.
If you drink a shit ton of alcohol, you risk a shit ton of hangover (or worse) water or not. But water is good.
Eat and hydrate, don’t stay over too late, the tomorrow you should be 80% ok
Water yes, but also electrolytes and vitamins. If you take a multivitamin, allergy pill, some Advil, and drink some water with salt/electrolytes added (or a Gatorade), you’ll be golden.
A hangover isn’t just dehydration, it’s also a immuno response to the poison. Allergy meds and ibuprofen help with pushing back the symptoms.
Everyone is saying hydrate but that’s a small part of it. The answer is L-cysteine. You can look up the studies. Take some during and after drinking and you will feel way better the next AM. Will still be tired but no other symptoms unless you really overdue it.
When I was younger, carbs helped. In college I would hand out slices of bread before we went to bed after a party.
In my 30s, I get hungover super easily. It’s weird.
Some people take one glass of alcohol and one glass of water. I don’t know if it works, though.
I even read once that “it is better if you take a spoon of cooking oil” because this helps the alcohol go through your digestive system smoothly and it doesn’t get stuck in your body.
Have a pint glass of water with every drink, ifnyou have a low tolerance this even more effective if you keep drinking water well after you are drunk and stopped consuming alcohol. If you have a high tolerance this will be less effective
Yes
It helps to drink a water between alcoholic drinks, and I’d (chug) drink a full litre before bed (half if I can’t).
Stock up on soda and electrolyte infused drinks for the next day.
Avoid aspirin and caffeine (blood thinners) the next day, can’t recall precisely but saw a piece about it on tv or some science program. If you need a painkiller (for headache) go for something other than aspirin.
Eat before and after of course. If you’re the type to get queasy or lose your appetite I used to stock up on fruit (same if you/friends do drugs that close your appetite – fruit helps, and kept me somewhat assured they stay hyderated/fed).
ETA: Whoever said this experience was a waste will eat their words now lol
Ketamine
You can do things to mitigate it. Drink lots of water, eat healthy food, and stop drinking alcohol at least 2 hours before sleeping.
Better spirits.
Don’t mix the alcohol with sugary drinks. Sugar contributes greatly to a hangover. Straight vodka is the alcoholics spirit of choice.
There is if you are a med student and have access to certain things but honestly take your bumps. When I did my degree they told us dancing was the key – keeping your metabolism high so you can metabolize those ketones makes a big diff. Dance your pants off.
If you drink a ton of water while you drink alcohol, you won’t get super drunk because you’ll dilute it. If you want to get drunk and stay hydrated, you get drunk and then you drink the water.
The “hangover cure” I’ve heard about is, 3 glasses of water, 3 vitamin C, and the recommended (on the bottle) dose of aspirin.
Your best chance would be if you drank straight vodka. no mixer especially no sugar
Drink an equal amount of water to alcohol. Eat a full meal before you go out drinking.
32+ oz of water and painkillers before going to bed.
This was actually taught during my mom’s high school biology class. It was also in Wisconsin.
It’s called alcohol dehydrogenase
Take prednisone
Girl, I learned this the hard way at my sister’s bachelorette party. Chugged water all night between drinks, felt like a genius. Next morning? Still wanted to die. Had to explain to my mom why I couldn’t make it to Sunday brunch. The only way to avoid a hangover is to drink less – took me 28 years to accept this cruel fact.
Eating a full meal beforehand helps. Also make sure you drink a ton of water before, during, and after drinking. I’m 40 so I’m getting a hangover no matter what, but if you’re younger this usually helps.
Lots of water and for me, not drinking sugary drinks. If I stick to beer and liquor I’ll be good, if I’m drinking twisted tea (worst offender to me) even after a tall boy or two I will be unbelievably hungover the next morning
Zbiotics is a pre-alcohol probiotic drink that basically will break down acetaldehyde which is the main reason for hangovers. Pretty pricey at $12 a pop on amazon, but super convenient to turn up and wake up the next day not feeling like shit. Swear by it…
I’ve “heard” that if ya use an enema bag , it takes just a couple shots to mess ya up. AND no hangover.
Now, of course this isn’t something ya do at a bar, BUT, say you and 3-4 buddy’s could get super drunk on a shared 250ml of whiskey pretty easy this way and still be able to get up in the morning for a round of golf.
There’s no better way during a golf trip, at least that’s what I heard.
Yes water helps but the real trick is knowing when to stop. You can get a really good buzz on and go home and sleep it off and be fine. Unfortunately, alcohol affects your decision-making process so it too often seems like a great idea to have a few more. That’s how you get in trouble.
If you can recognize when you’re drunk and quit while you’re ahead you will have a much happier next morning.
The real secret to not getting hangovers over 25 yrs old is to be a raging alcoholic. When I drank almost a 5th a day I felt “normal” in the morning. I no longer drink.
I almost never get hangovers and although I think it’s mostly genetic good fortune, I always have a water on tbf go throughout the night, drink a glass before bed, and drink mostly dark spirits rather than vodka, gin, or wine. All of those I think help.
Hydration and proper nutrition can mitigate it, but alcohol causes a lot of stress on the liver regardless of hydration status. Also, the main reason you feel drunk is because of the effects alcohol has on your GABA, NMDA, dopamine, and serotonin receptors. Whenever you take a chemical that alters the effects of neurotransmitters on your body, there will be a rebound effect as your body tries to maintain homeostasis.
Take, for instance, MDMA. By itself, MDMA does not cause dehydration or any real negative effects on the body that you would feel the next day. It does, however, significantly impact your serotonin receptors by essentially dumping all of it and inhibiting its reuptake. So after one comes down from MDMA, their body responds by significantly lowering free serotonin levels and increasing reuptake. This leads to a very terrible depressive type of comedown. This is unavoidable because of the nature of the drug. The same is true with alcohol.
So, no. You can’t prevent a hangover by doing anything other than not drinking. “What goes up must come down” is a rule nature will not allow you to break.
GHB 🤣 just kidding that’s illegal
Have a glass if water between every drink. Be well fed before you start drinking. Although, i would rather be mildly drunk for a long time than get super drunk.
Become an alcoholic and the hangovers stop; you just get withdrawals instead which are so much worse.
Zbiotics. A genetically modified probiotic that eats the hangover-causing byproduct of alcohol digestion.
Works great.
Vacations. I always bounce back much easier, go out to brunch and start again.
No.
Glass of water for every ounce of alcohol helps.
I also sometimes take an antihistamine after the festivities.
You’ll be peeing a lot, but the best way is to just drink water in tandem with alcohol. I’m nearly 40 and will only have 2 beers on Friday and 2 on Saturday, but if I decide to “get crazy” and have a 3rd beer either of those nights, I’ll drink water in between. Either a glass of water in between glasses of beer, or alternate a sip of water with a sip of beer.
Basically, just drink water. In my wilder days, I’d drink a shit ton more than I do now, and as long as I was drinking water along the way, I woke up feeling fine. It’s when I neglected my water intake that I felt like absolute shit the following morning.
So it’s possible. Just gotta stay on top of your water. Again, you will be pissing a LOT, but it’s worth it if you want to get wild with minimal consequences.
NMN and a couple of grams of coke
Generally no, but there are ways to limit it.
Have a good babe, work your way to it, avoid alcohol with more sugar (wines, sugary mixed drinks, etc.), drink water.
Note, drinking water isn’t going to counteract the dehydration of the diuretic because it basically makes the water pass right through you (hence why you pee more). Drinking something like a liquid iv can help too.
I drank almost every night, most nights I drank I got drunk and never once dealt with a hangover. I’m 40+ years old, almost 3 years sober. The only tip I can give you for not getting a hangover is sober up. It’s so worth it.
Drink water all day. Drink Electrolyte drink before you start drinking. Drink only 100% Agave Silver Tequila. Drink electrolyte drink before bed.
Good luck.
There’s only one way to achieve that. Never stop drinking! /s
You could switch to ghb instead lol 😂
Eat and take aspirin before you drink. Drink water in between alcoholic drinks. Not perfect but noticeably better.
If you don’t fall asleep drunk you’ll never get hung over. It might be hard to stay awake for that amount of time, but if you’re sipping water while you sober up you’ll genuinely be good.
In Greece with drink juicees, pint glass, 1/4 vodka, mostly water and then a squash, like vimto – hydration stays around the same and you can get drunk off 3/4 of them as that’s a pint of vodka 🤣
It’s two things dehydration and a drop in blood pressure.
It’s also a poison, so…you know…poisoning yourself.
Don’t drink or eat sugar during drinking (This means no beer or mixed drinks) and hydrate a lot before you go to bed.
Yes, if you drink so much that you die, you will not get a hangover. Same thing if you are hit by a cannon ball made of lost hopes and dreams with a dash of lead while super drunk.
Yes, you hit the nail on the head. If you chug water intermittently throughout a drinking marathon you can get super drunk and not get a massive hangover or blacked out. That’s how we used to drink Thurs-Sun in college. Be prepared to pee A LOT. My rule was: If I go to the bathroom, after I wash my hands, cup my hands under the faucet and drink until I can’t anymore. Do that every time you hit the bathroom and you’ll drink people under the table. It served me quite well. Also if you grab a quick snack before bed like a sub or something before bed really helps stave off the hangover as well.
Don’t go to sleep drunk, ride it out.
Water by itself won’t help much, it needs to be absorbed into the body, when you’re drinking fluids in excess it’ll simply go right through you. You would need to eat some food to help your body absorb the water, and on top, an electrolyte solution would be the best, excessive water will pull salt out furthering your dehydration, concentrations always migrate from high to low, since you have more salt in your body than the water you drink you’ll be making things worse. Eat food and drink electrolytes to get rid of or prevent a hangover
Yes and no. If you go super hard there’s always a chance you can end up nauseous bc alcohol is a poison. But for normal non vomiting hangovers. I suggest the following.
Your biggest enemy is hydration and lack of sleep and sugar.
Avoid sugary drinks.
Try to be peak drunk at least an hour before heading home so that you’re getting close to sobering up when you get home.
Drink water during the night and then make sure you pound some when you get home and put some by your bedside. If you were dancing and sweating then add electrolytes.
The biggest thing for me is lack of sleep. Try to sleep in, take some melatonin, wear a sleep mask. Whatever helps you sleep.
I have heard advertisements on podcasts for some product that claims if you consume it before drinking, you’ll be less likely to have a hangover. I don’t remember the name and I don’t know if it works.
I don’t get hungover easily. I chug a BUNCH of water before I go to bed and that usually helps a lot
Drink a pint of water before you sleep. Tends to work. Dehydration is a big part of what causes the hangover.
Hangovers are not just dehydration. The older I get, the more susceptible I am to a hangover. On occasion, I get one from a single beer these days.
Ya online communities are very anti drink and anti socialize. Just every time you drink should have water as well. Drinking can be a good social lubricant if you control it. Many people can’t and that’s fine but I’ve never been one to go crazy.
Be young. And lucky.
Otherwise eating a lot. Staying very hydrated with something that includes electrolytes (liquid IV/gatorade/etc). Mostly drinking clear liquor.
As a general rule I try to have one glass of water for every drink. I’ll take lots of bathroom trips over the dehydration the next day.
It’s genetics, tolerance, hydration and supplementation. Also, mixing your sugars is a great way to a terrible hangover. Like, starting the night with beer, doing shots of tequila, having mixed drinks pretty much always leads to a bad tomorrow. Stick with one drink.
I drink often, but am from a long line of alcoholics.
My tolerance is so high, I can easily drink a case of beer, handle of booze, or box of wine, in a day and feel fine the next day. Couldn’t do that in my 20s.
I take lots of supplements, in addition to drinking loads of water throughout the day, regardless if I plan to drink or not.
I don’t recommend building your tolerance just so you don’t get hungover.
Hangover is actually withdrawal not dehydration.
Tequila sodas. Good tequila, not added sugar but 100% agave. The soda water will help keep you hydrated, and there is some science behind why tequila gives less of a hangover.
You will still probably not be 100%, but I’ve gotten tanked on these, and woken up pretty much fine.
Well, I recommend to crush a few tablets (5) of activated charcoal in pharmaceutical form, mix it with half a liter of water and drink before going to sleep.
Switch to weed. Different high, no hangover.
Not neccesarily without consequences, but Vodka, soda water, lots of ice and a dash of flavour like coke. Clear drinks are less egregious. Darker drinks add to hangover. At least a pint of water before you go to sleep, preferably with a diralite mixed in to replenish salts, or a kebab
Drinking water after each drink and drinking water and eating before bed will help. But you can’t completely prevent one if you’re drinking heavily.
I’ve tried it all. Chugging pedialyte, taking a pile of supplements, eating a bunch, water between drinks, etc. The truth is nothing works, it might help but no way to completely eliminate a hangover. I’ve come to accept that when I drink heavily now, I am hungover/tired for like 3 days and it sucks. I still do it once in a while tho for some reason
Not entirely but Ive found you can mitigate it by forcing yourself to sober up at least a little bit before you go to sleep. If you pass out drunk you’ll be hungover no matter what.
Ghb or smoke weed
A few comments in and I haven’t seen anyone mention sugar. It won’t get rid of the chances of hangover but having mixed drinks versus hard liquor can make your hangover way worse.
Hydration tablet in water.
One before drinking.
One after drinking.
One the morning after drinking.
drink lots of water and don’t
smoke.
Remove your appendix. Used to have wicked hangovers, Mine almost burst had it removed. Can now drink like a savage and hardly feel bad next day. Drives my wife crazy.
Water really is key, in my personal experience.
Every time I drink alcohol, I get thirsty. So I drink water until I’m not thirsty, which is usually much more water than alcohol.
Even if I’m drunk, I am still cognizant enough to know I am thirsty and thus drink more water. Sometimes I eat, usually because I’m hungry as well.
Never have I ever had a hangover.
Bacchus-D
Short answer is no…. But you can find ways to reduce the hangover which would require some trial and error to find what works for you.
Hydration – pretty straightforward, alcohol dehydrates you so find what amount of H2O is required to offset. Liquid IV’s/hydration packs can help.
Congeners/methanol- Congeners are what give alcohol it’s flavor and is a methanol which is toxic for your body. Darker alcohols usually have higher levels of congeners so you can experiment to see if this is something that helps you. The lowest congeners drinks are basically vodka and light beers… I know boring.
Supplements – one the driving factors of being drunk is your liver not being able process the amount of alcohol consumed. You can try different types of supplements to help clear the liver. Some examples that work for me:
I love drinking and will continue to find what works for me, if you share the passion I wish you the best in finding what works for you. Good luck!
Well, one bit of advice I can give is take 2 Aleeve when you go to bed wasted. You’ll still have some hangover, but it’ll be way more tolerable without a blaring headache.
When you wake up, drink water while you have your coffee also.
Yes, water does reduce hangovers. It’s well known.
It doesn’t eliminate them, but it helps a lot.
“Your body needs water, so drink that shit” — Bomani Armah
I really have only had one headache in my life, one of the times I’ve had Covid. As far as hangovers it’s just super tired and, stomach kind of upset. Only thing that’s ever worked is water before bed and hair of the dog in the morning which kinda just borrows you time and won’t work if you need to be somewhere public or work. I miss being young and like a machine with 0 hangovers. I love my beer but only answer for me now is not going overboard, still get hammered sometimes, which doesn’t really answer your question.
It would lessen the hangover. But you have to keep drinking water even after the night is over
Edibles. The correct answer is edibles.
Top shelf liquor. No sugary mixers. Regular meals. Drink a few electrolyte powders during and after the binge.
If it’s legal in your state, I would pop a cannabis gummy but take 1/2 dosage of what I would regularly take at the beginning of the night.
No. Hydration definitely helps, as does eating something before you go to sleep. Taking an advil also helps. But the real reason you are hungover is because alcohol causes inflammation and your headache is a result of that. Obviously its worse if you are dehydrated and have an empty stomach. But there’s no way to get the drunk part without the inflammation.
Is there a way to get super hungover without getting drunk? Good for sick days lol
Water certainly helps. And drinking what while you are drinking alcohol.
The supplement NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) is often taken by people who do wine, beer and spirit tastings. NAC helps in your body’s detoxification process. It is also commonly given intravenous to people with an acetaminophen overdose to prevent or reduce kidney and liver damage.
You can buy NAC as a supplement at most health food stores or maybe even Walmart. One or 2 before a night of drinking certainly helps me feel much better the next day.
I abstained from alcohol for years bc I thought I was allergic or something. I was immediately ill: nauseous/vomiting. Turns out I can only drink certain things, all of them clear: vodka and white claw are very safe for me. I can pretty much drink as much as I want, and wake up feeling great -even if I didn’t hydrate as much as I should. Idk if it’s the tannins &/or sugar content that ruins my night.
Just keep drinking.
Keep up with the liquids. Drinking beer will make you piss, drink water for every pint you drink
I almost rarely have ever had a hangover but I think some people are just more predisposed to get them. That said, I only do clear liquor and drink a few bottles of water before bed. I tend to metabolize alcohol fairly quickly but again, some folks just fare better than others.
Take a paracetamol before bed. Gets rid of your hangover while you are asleep
Vertigo
Ahhh…the Holy Grail…the Unicorn.
Drink lots of water before drinking alcohol. Like 3 liters.
Drink a water between every alcoholic drink and pee often.
Just start drinking again immediately when you wake up the next morning
Drink glas of water after every drink. Pee often and eat something with a lot of fat (like pizza or a burger) on your way home or as soon as you get home.
Probably, but I haven’t found it.
Sometimes you get lucky. Just gotta drink as often as possible, and one of those mornings you’ll wake up without a hangover! Don’t give up!
No matter what, you have the ability to drink too much, but this is what you do to keep that hangover away. It’s obvious to those that know, but some haven’t dialed it in yet. It really is all about the importance of keeping your body hydrated while drinking a mild poison that rapidly dehydrates you.
Before a night of drinking, make sure to drink a lot more water than normal to prep yourself.
As others have said, get something with some sodium and electrolytes in it. I have some pills from Amazon. But pedialyte, liquid iv, whatever, something like that. I haven’t dialed in the best time to take it. Sometime right before, or in the middle of your night of drinking.
Match each alcohol shot/beverage with a glass of water. This is huge. You’re going to want to forget it in the moment, and that dumb, just keep it up.
Finish up the night with another glass/bottle of water. Have an emergency water by your bed.
Remember, this isn’t a magic anti-hangover spell. You can do all of this and still take too many shots in too short of a time, and have a bad time that lasts 30 hours. To take it up to full responsibility mode, wait 15 minutes after each drink, and then really evaluate where you’re at, and where another drink would get you. Maybe it’s not time yet, and you can think about it again in a little bit.
Yup. Been quite drunk a few times. Alternative alcohol with water and pound a bottle or two of water before bed with a couple Advil. You’ll be peeing a lot through the night but you won’t have a headache in the morning
Gatorade or something similar helps too
Liquid iv! Chug at least one bottle of water with liquid iv and eat some carbs after you drink and before you go to bed. You might still have a hangover but def not as badly as if you don’t hydrate and eat beforehand
If you did that and still went to bed at 10pm you’d probably feel semi ok. It’s the lack of sleep that makes you feel worse, or lack of decent sleep (sleepingin day isn’t the same )
Eat before and during drinking, drink a glass of water after every drink, and drink clear liquors as those have less of the congeners that can cause hangovers. Also, set an alarm to wake you up a couple of hours after going to sleep to drink some more water. And spacing out the drinks helps too.
As a recovering alcoholic I can safely say: don’t.
When you’re drunk, you’ve basically poisoned yourself, so no.
Become an alcoholic, drink all day every day. You won’t get hangovers. Also drink water too, that prevents the dehydration headaches when drinking excessively.
Rehydrating sachets. Boom.
I usually chase my liquor with some pedialyte and before bed, I chug it.
