ELI5: What do humans smell like and can we create it?

r/

Okay we have saying “smelling like wet dog”. “Smells like roses”

My pets can obviously smell me distinctively from other humans.

So what do humans smell like? And can we create the scent of an individual human like perfume companies with perfumes?

It probably wouldn’t be easy to say, since we cover ourselves in all kinds of aromas, and have varying lengths between showers. But our ancestors surely smelled of straight must.

Too many factors. Diet, gender, weight, temperature tolerance, etc.

Everyone has their own scent. It like dogs do too (which is why they’re so happy to snuff butt) if you’ve ever walked into a strangers home and was like huh it smells like blank, chances are good that’s their personal smell. You have one too but usually can’t detect it because it’s you.

So at my work we have shower facilities that leads used water to a gray water tank.

The tank gets covered with like 2-4 cm wit human fat on the inside.

I would imagine that is the “condenced” smell of human is.

    It is not pleasent

I have smelled a lot of different people and there are a lot of different human smells, ranging from spicy to salty to musky to musty to fresh cheese to old cheese to metallic to the sort of rotten smell of someone who is having a bad time to an actual corpse, maybe to a dog these would all have some kind of unifying component but they seem very different to me. “Perfume” tells the story of a guy born with no scent who becomes obsessed with trying to turn people into perfume so he can have one.

Human scent varies. Many factors like hygiene, diet, environment from air quality to weather, water intake, hormone levels and bacteria from saliva and skin and sweat, even genetics affect our scent.

People from different cultures can smell different due to genes (for example, Asian people usually not having smelly sweat or smelly armpits) and culture and lifestyle and location.

We all have smells in common like proteins that make up our body and certain bacteria. Plus there are enough people who fit the same criteria at any given time, whether they have food or toothpaste or alcohol on their breath, armpits that have an odor or sweet scent, etc, that creatures can easily smell us and decide we are people. Our specific factors like diet and hygiene and other familiar scents make our pets and infants recognize us (which is also why many parents sleep with their newborns’ blankets before the newborns use it, the scent of the parents calms them down).

Indians have a very distinct particular smell, it’s not pleasant, especially in the gym, but it’s hard to describe it in any other way besides saying it’s Indian

Pretty generally, humans smell quite pungent and unpleasant.. Remove soap and frequent bathing from the equation, and we are one of the smelliest animals on earth (supported by studies). The main reason for this is how heavily we rely on our sweat glands to regulate our body temperature and that there are bacteria that thrive in our sweat. We can definitely recreate it in a lab by culturing the same bacteria that lives on our skin, though I’m not sure you’d want to.

some people smell gnarly but a “good” human smell I think of cologne, oil/gas, tobacco, musk are common for a decent smelling male. Female. Id go with subtle floral smells combined with like vanilla or cotton candy.

Certain Asians smell like stale cabbage.

Some people have body odor that smells like french onion soup
