How do you cope with everything that’s going on in the US?

r/

As the title said, and yes I’ll talk to my therapist. I’m seeking some advice about how to cope with the current events going on with US politics. For background, I was an international student, I left my home country because I felt the grip of my family was too hard and I didn’t have my own will. With everything that’s been going on in the US, I’m struggling coping with the fact that I left my home country, my family (they are all still there) to go to the US with this idea that I could live more freely. Now I feel like it’s going in the exact opposite direction and Idk what I was fighting so hard for anymore.

Any advice on how to cope?

I was in a similar situation once but I realized there are more countries in the world than just the one I was born in (I couldn’t go back there because gay) and the one I happened to be living in at the time.

I remember that community action can be a small act of freedom and rebellion.

Go out with your friends to a park or meet up with your local Democratic Society Association chapter or look at your dog 🐶.

I am trying to remember that my spirit won’t be broken.

Find your community/ build community. Our leaders have failed us and while it can be so easy to isolate right now, lean into your connections and the community around you. Find mutual aid groups  and the work being done to support them. Support your local libraries by getting all the library cards you can and check things out. Find those moments of joy that they cannot touch, they rely on us feeling hopeless. Create art, even if it isn’t good, even if you never were artistic. Read about the thing that scares you to understand the what’s next/how do I…these are all things in my tool bag in addition to therapy. The fears we have are real and we need to not just shove them down but to acknowledge that we are in unknown territory for the US but not for history. We know what they are planning to do.
