KU was #1 in one poll, OU was #1 in the other poll. I was lucky enough to be courtside for it as a student broadcaster so I got a courtside viewing of one of the best college basketball games ever. The game went into 3OT, Buddy Hield for OU (the away team) went off for nearly 50 points and got a standing ovation after the game from the KU crowd, it was incredible. I didn’t get my voice back for 2 days after that game.

The one that I can see and feel the most still is Kobe’s game winner against the Phoenix Suns. Drives right, elbow jumper, shot goes in, Kobe runs with fist pump. 2006 me was devastated. Curry’s 3 pt flurry against France in the final at the Olympics also comes to mind. Just amazement at every shot and disbelief when he hits the final with a fadeaway over two defenders.

  56. UsedEgg3 Avatar

I was in Vegas was during the 2010 World Cup, sitting at a bar watching the Uruguay vs Ghana quarterfinal game, and the other guy sitting there clearly had money on Ghana.

I got to watch him freak the fuck out as: Ghana famously had a wide open shot on goal in the last moments of extra time get desperately double-hand-swatted away by Luis Suarez (not the goalie) of Uruguay. He got a red card and was kicked out of the game for it, but Ghana banged the ensuing penalty off the top crossbar and the game went to a penalty shootout, where they continued being miserable at penalties and lost.

I felt privileged to be a first-hand witness to this dude’s epic meltdown over some of the most rotten luck that’s probably ever happened in sports betting. Fuck betting on sports though. And they changed the rules immediately after that World Cup so you can’t get away with batting the ball out of the goal in desperation anymore. I think it counts as a goal now without needing a penalty to be taken, and the offender still gets booted out of the game.

Edit: Found a YT clip of the drama. Imagine having bet on Ghana here, lol.

I saw the Romain Grosjean crash live on tv.

It was the first time I had seen a really bad accident while watching F1. After that I stopped watching for a while because I was way too anxious. Even now, even though I love watching racing, I feel a lot more scared than when I started watching.

On the live feed we just saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm3zjRNuW_8

Followed by minutes of nobody reporting anything at all (at least it felt like minutes).

Turned out he managed to get out of the car and be alive, but definitely scary as fuck.

  75. lol_camis Avatar

It was the final stretch of the Daytona 500 and Dale Jarrett was in the lead. He went in for a pit stop, including fuel. If you’ve ever seen NASCAR before, they have (or used to have. I don’t watch it anymore) these large cylinders with a built in funnel at the bottom. I just turn it upside down in to the gas tank and let it drain.

Well his pit crew, for whatever reason, forgot or failed to remove it before he took off again. Although it was unintentional, it still counts as a penalty and he lost his entire lap as he rounded the track back to pit lane to have it removed.

What an absolute tragedy. This was in the 90s so it’s not like I was following the aftermath on social media or anything. But someone definitely got fired that day.

Just as a time out finished, some idiot passes by the Bulls bench and grabs a player’s jacket from his warm ups off the back of the player’s chair.

Proceeds to sprint up the stairs and head for the lobby.

The player, John “You Want Trouble / I Got Your Trouble Right Here” Sloan, shoots out of his seat, hurdles his chair and takes off up the stairs like a bat out of hell.

They both disappear into the lobby.

A minute later Sloan comes back down the stairs, jacket in hand.

Probably the only time in Laker’s history a Bull got a standing ovation (true story) from a Lakers crowd.

1980/81. Jets/Bears preseason game at the Meadowlands. Bears score td, but the crew doesn’t get the net up behind the gosl post for the extra point. It is good, and the ball goes into the stands. Lucky fan cstches it and starts running up the aisle, he’s finna keep the ball. About a dozen security guys come the get said fan and ball. He starts zig-zagging through the seats in some particularly impressive open-field running, but he is outnumbered. So as the first guards get to him he lets loose a perfect spiral about 4 sections over. Receiver fan makes a nice catch and breaks for the exits. As security closes in on him, he sends a perfect spiral into the mezzanine. More security, more passes, laterals, and handoffs.
The ball makes about 4 turns around the stadium going from field level to upper decks with hapless security always getting there a step too late. Ball is back at field level and PA announcer says “whoever has ghe ball just keep it.”
At this point the ball is on the field level and the dope holding it THROWS IT BACK ONTO THE FIELD! The mezzanine fans take a dim view of this action, and start showering the offending ball thrower backer guy with beers. Surrounding fans don’t appreciate getting soaked with beer, so they start pummeling the snot out of the guy, which if course brings an army of security back amongst the fans for a proper donnybrook.
It was a pre-season game. NOBODY WAS WATCHING the game for the entire third quarter.
None of us remember who won.

Watched Miami’s 8-lateral kick return to beat Duke in 2015 from the third row of a sports bar where half the staff and customers were Miami fans and the other half Duke fans. Whole place went from resigned silence to complete chaos in about 30 seconds as that play unfolded. The Duke fans were already celebrating, then absolute mayhem broke out – drinks flying, people screaming, and finally Duke fans throwing menus when the refs upheld it despite what looked like a knee down and a block in the back. Never seen a place flip from funeral to riot so fast.

For me, the Mile High Miracle and the Minneapolis Miracle. Both US Football.

  111. titsmuhgeee Avatar

Kansas State University football game, sometime around 2013-2014.

They used to do a pre-game ritual where the rival mascot would run out to the center of the football field, then the KSU Wildcat mascot would run out and tackle them.

Well, apparently the Wildcat mascot that day used to play football because this dude laid out the other mascot, which was the West Virginia Mountaineer. Full speed, lowered shoulder, pile driver.

The mascot that got tackled was knocked out cold. Us in the stands knew it was bad, but then the kid started to have a seizure right there on the 50 yard line in front of 50,000 people.

It was really bad. Medical rushed in, stretchered him off the field, and took him to the hospital. That was the last time that ritual was ever done, lost to the annals of history. The internet is completely scrubbed of videos of it happening, with only articles with dead links to videos remaining.
