As a college student, I have no idea why people shit on others for wanting to go into investment banking, PE, defense contracting, consulting, or biglaw, just because they think that these jobs “dOn’T aDd vAlUe tO sOcIeTy!!!” when there’s this thing called paying the bills and buying a house in this economy. Do you all think that this stems from a sense of insecurity of being unable to get these jobs, so they hate on the ones that do? As someone who was born to immigrants with basically a non existent professional network, I’d take any of these jobs in a heartbeat.

Counterpoint. Every job adds to society.
If a job didn’t add value to society then it wouldn’t be a job, because no one needs the services and so why would someone be paid to do it.
The bleep are you talking about? Aren’t those some of the (potentially) highest paying jobs around?
I’d say there’s a difference between adding value and being parasitic. An artist might not “add value” in the traditional sense. Same with the jobs you listed (though I’m not sure I agree with your logic). But that doesn’t necessarily make them bad.
But what about a drug dealer? What about a predatory lender? What about someone selling overpriced “scam” insurance policies? I’d say that there are certainly jobs that exist to exploit vulnerable people, and I would consider those to be parasitic and a detriment to society.
Its not hard to add value to society
the thing is my friend i move trucks and if i dont people dont get stuff in their local stores so if that dosent add value i guess im dumb
they add to society. it doesnt matter what you think, you are just wrong.
Isn’t it more that those types of jobs often actively harm others/society?
Read your Marx padawan. You’ll understand what value is
I think the people you talk to doesn’t understand what value is
Well there is no job for you, if you dont add ” VALUE” to the company.
Tell me you’re American without saying you’re American.
The whole argument tldrs down to “I don’t give a shit if what I do is good or bad for society, as long as I personally am getting paid a lot”
If a job didn’t add something of value to society it simply wouldn’t exist.
