TIFU by accidentally getting stoned at work

r/

I work at a law firm. Boss keeps the windows open and I get really bad allergies in spring. Today I forgot my Zyrtec so I was having really bad symptoms, like could not breathe bad. Boss was like, we have benadryl. I’ve never taken benadryl in my life. I figure how bad can it be. I take two. I then read the package: may cause marked fatigue. I usually drink strong cold brew in the morning and I also take a daily steroid inhaler for chronic asthma, which can wire me so bad that i lose sleep. You can see where this is going. The combo of the coffee and inhaler and benadryl is bad, like I can’t think and my hands are floppy bad. I feel like I ate a weed gummy. My boss is asking me to send important tax documents to high powered attorneys and I’m sweating. I cannot read the documents because I’m living in the time dilation zone. I have been moving in slow motion since 9:30 am. I have no idea how I’m supposed to accomplish anything like this. I tried to pick up the phone earlier and failed three times bc I kept dropping it. Coworkers think I’m actually high on real drugs. I cannot. think. I’m going to cry.

TL;DR I accidentally speedballed myself at work.

Been there once but did not OD on coffee. Napped at my desk without knowing it

you freaking out about this is definitely making this worse probably. Can you just say you’re not feeling well, go home, and sleep? or tell your boss what’s going on

  3. Dunsparces Avatar

Sounds like something you should tell the boss who gave you benadryl.

  4. blueberry0721 Avatar

You need to tell your boss that you are having a bad reaction to the Benadryl and that you cannot work. DO NOT drive home like this. Have someone you trust pick you up and keep an eye on you if possible. It might be good to have someone more coherent call poison control to check on the medication interactions to see how serious it is.

I’ll pop two of those bad boys when I want to get that good drool on my pillow sleep. You’re in it the rest of the day, good luck.

This is why one should never take random medication without a doctor’s prescription.

“Boss was like, we have benadryl. I’ve never taken benadryl in my life. I figure how bad can it be. I take two”

    Clearly 2 expert doctors here.

I done something like that. I was getting ready in the morning, and instead of taking supplements, I took some otc sleeping aid. I noticed it right away, but I couldn’t throw it up. So I hurried to work. I have a 20-minute drive. Made it safely and sat at my desk and started to work. My drowsiness lasted about 2 hrs.

  8. starstarstar42 Avatar

Okay, nobody throws anything until I blow this whistle…even if they do say “Jehovah”.

    Also, drink lots of water.

50mg of Benadryl with breakfast lmfao

  11. fliguana Avatar

Benadryl is also sold as sleep aid.

    One pill – antihistamine dose,
Two pills – good night dose.

My father once took Tylenol PM b4 a work meeting with several Navy guys, he showed up absolutely off his game (my dad is a pretty straight laced guy, if he seems sloshed sumthing is up)
So mid presentation he’s spewing word salad and slurring his words, they cut him off and ask what he took to help with his jet lag, everyone had a laugh and that meeting was moved till the next morning

  13. sqwarkle Avatar

Could be worse. I read farted instead of failed… so I thought on top of everything else, you were blasting farts out every time you tried to pick up the phone.

  14. DiScOrDtHeLuNaTiC Avatar

Some people react weird to meds. The little pink Benadryl are supposed to be ‘non-drowsy’, but they will 100% knock me on my ass.

  15. Different-Moose Avatar

I also have nasty allergies, and take a lot of Reactine now. Back when I was first hit with an ER level allergic reaction, the Dr prescribed me Atarax – basically super high dose benadryl. Turns out I react badly to it too, got ALL the side effects except seizure. Like tremors, irritability (uncontrollable, not jist a tad bit grumpy that I could talk myself out of), I was more miserable than I was with the hives and swollen tongue!
Benadryl a no go for me. Not much you can do but ride it out til its left your system. I feel for you.

  16. Accurize2 Avatar

Your post reads as if you’re currently experiencing these symptoms live as you created this post. Yet somehow you made a long Reddit post about how you couldn’t do anything accurately with your hands… 🧐

  17. Plus_Sea_8932 Avatar

Glad you are well enough to Reddit.

  18. I_cum_dragonboats Avatar

u/screendemon – this is for later you, but it may not be the combination of chemicals in your body. You might be one of the people who has a paradoxical reaction to benadryl. A friend of mine has this and instead of getting sleepy like most people do she bounces around like a manic labradoodle.

Like others have said, right now the important thing is to get home safely and take care of yourself. However, you can probably figure out why this might be important information to have going forward.

And here I thought that speedballing would give an unwanted amount of energy…or wanted energy if your a finance bro.

  20. Odd-Sun7447 Avatar

Benadryl is just diphenhydramine, one of the most commonly taken meds EVER. It’s in all of the PM pain meds, and basically EVERY over the counter sleeping medicine. You didn’t eat a weed gummy, and if that’s the effect you’re getting from an over the counter sleeping pill bruh, you need to buck up bro.

If you made it through law school, you partied harder than this in college unless you didn’t have any friends…

  21. Ahcro Avatar

I want to read the update.

    Good luck with this =)

  22. VivaZeBull Avatar

I also took Benadryl for the first time working, and holy shit. I didn’t know it would make me see things out of the corner of my eye that weren’t there. It was hell.

I felt like shit, I worked in a factory and I couldn’t shake the feeling something was going to hit me from behind.

Eventually I left early because I just couldn’t function between the increased paranoia, stair steps of grey in my side view and the fatigue.

I have not taken it since.

  23. LuigiOma Avatar

    Next time take one Benadryl

My wife had an allergic reaction to a bug bite a few years ago and ended up taking too much Benadryl. She sat at my birthday dinner staring into the void, mildly hallucinating, and has never touched the stuff again. It can be a hell of a drug. RIP to OP, feel better soon!

  27. Sun_Bro96 Avatar

Yes, Benadryl removes allergies by knocking you out. Can’t sneeze if you’re unconscious.

  28. Traveuse Avatar

Maybe read packages before dosing yourself with something you’ve never taken before…
Common sense really is uncommon these days

  29. 50FootClown Avatar

Yeah, you gotta go. The same thing happened to me like a decade ago. I mean, I dosed myself with the Benadryl, but I didn’t realize how it was gonna affect me. Thankfully my boss was a pal, and I just went into his office feeling like I was walking on marshmallows and just told him I had to go home due to a medication reaction and that was that. Good luck.

  30. t4thfavor Avatar

I am what some would consider a benedryl expert due to some severe and long lasting allergies to milk proteins… Which are in everything… And I live where all the cows live (Michigan).

I can take two benedryl and drink a beer and feel no effects beyond a little cotton mouth. It is basically the only allergy medicine that will help me once I’m having a reaction. I once took some Zyzal while on vacation and it literally put me to sleep on the spot (I had been drinking earlier in the day, just a few drinks, not enough to even feel the effects of). One moment I was standing, and the next moment I was re-enacting the lambo scene from the Wolf of Wallstreet.

  32. notreallywatson Avatar

When I was younger and dumber, I had really bad allergies and went to my friend’s to stay the weekend. We had a couple glasses of wine and before turning in for the night, I popped two Benadryl so that I’d sleep through the night.

Ended up waking up shivering and confused, on the floor of her kitchen, on my back, with a dropped spoon of peanut butter next to me that I didn’t remember getting, and my back aching. Tried to stand up and immediately went tingly and passed out and flopped back onto the tile. Came to again and grabbed the counter to stand up and drag myself to the bathroom because I felt like I was gonna puke and blacked out again. Woke up and was able to crawl/drag myself back to the couch to try to sleep, while repeatedly blacking out through the journey.

Woke up the next morning with bruises all over my back and a sore head. Benadryl is SKETCHY, beware, especially when taking any other substances with it!

Yet you were able to make a perfectly coherent post on reddit? And reply to several comments?

  34. SpiritTalker Avatar

Just 1 Benedryl knocks me TF out! I don’t ever take it outside of a mandatory pre-infusion med (that I can’t get out of, it’s there in case there a reaction). But I hate it. It makes me feel so loopy, sleepy, out of it. Luckily I’m not going anywhere for hours while hooked up to an iv for hours, but still. I hate it and would never voluntarily ingest it.

  35. xMyDixieWreckedx Avatar

I just suffer through allergies because I hate the way thr nedications make me feel.

  37. MoodHistorical2924 Avatar

Dude 50mg of benadryl is enough to knock you out. A lot of people cant even tolerate 25. It’s your boss’s fault and responsibility.

I am an adult but will take the smallest dose possible of the children’s dye free liquid Benedryl . Works like a charm and I dont get sleepy or fatigued. I’m also on a steroid asthma inhaler and take Zyrtec.

  42. holt45and2zigzags Avatar

But did you see the Hatman?

  43. SpongegirlCS Avatar

Why did you take two? It’s not aspirin. You double dosed, that’s why you got so out of it.

  44. aquatone61 Avatar

I did this to myself in college. Went to a school in central Florida that was packed with giant oak trees. I’m extremely allergic to oak pollen. One day I’m beyond miserable, I have a sinus infection and I’m having such a bad day with the pollen I’m sneezing near uncontrollably and snot is about dripping out my nose. I had already taken my normal allergy meds but was desperate so I took 2 Benadryl gel caps with the powder inside and broke them open and dumped into a glass of OJ and drank it. That was a terrible idea. I know exactly what you experienced.

  52. saholden87 Avatar

Omg dead laughing. I joke that children Benadryl is a date rape drug for me… it knocks me the fuck out. I will not take it either.

  53. siskit77 Avatar

The adult dose of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is 1-2 tabs every 4-6 hrs, probably should’ve tried just one to start with. But, it may not have made a difference. One time on the way to work I started having a horrible allergic reaction when I turned the A/C on, by the time I got to work .5mile away, my eyes were watering profusely. I was going I on my day off to drive a group of developmentally disabled adults to camp an hour away. My boss suggested a Benadryl, I told her I would fall asleep at the wheel and kill everyone. There was no one else, we just had to wait it out and be late. I washed my eyes/face with baby shampoo repeatedly and that did work. Coincidentally, I work at a law office now, I feel you…the anxiety of the attorneys needing something from you!

Was once having a severe anxiety attack and was told that Benadryl has a active ingredient to act an an anxiety med. I ended up taking 5 which I read was suggested. That feeling is something I wish I never experienced. It spiraled me even more and I felt like I was fighting for my life for over an hour. Terrible time and experience-10/10
