My friend was killed 6 years ago yesterday. He was an organ donor and the first person to donate his organs for the gift of Hope org at the local trauma center. As much as it sucks to not have your friend it is easier knowing that so many people have parts of him and continue on with their families. Some of the recipients have written letters to his family, it makes the impact even more felt.
In truth people are kinda funny in that if they have not made a strong stance about something they usually just roll with the default option, so countries that have it the default of “I am an organ donor” but you are free to opt out if you want to, those countries have close to an 80% organ donation rate, they don’t have shortages like the rest of us.
Absolutely yes. I’ve had multiple family members live longer, healthy, happy lives because of a donor. The whole “they won’t save you!!!” thing is total bullshit, but people just continue to spread that lie. If I’m gone, someone else can have them. It gives people their lives back.
I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone, because it can be abused, and there are bound to be more ethical ways to achieve whatever its goal is. I don’t recall ever considering it.
My mother would still be alive today if her donor hadn’t backed out. Technically it was the donors family they didn’t want to wait the hour it may have taken or the 30 minutes to prep her because she was a special case.
A loooong time ago, I was a stripper, and I remember a co-worker saying that organ donation wasn’t Christian because it ruined the body. I was like, you hav. e fake tits, tattoos, and piercings but you won’t donate an organ.
Yes, unless/until I get very old than I want to do cadaver donation to a medical school, like 80+ years.
I’m on the bone marrow registry but have never been matched and managed to get my iron up enough to donate blood exactly once. My body’s just kind frail so I’m not willing to be a living donor of a kidney or liver.
I’m a donor, although my organs may not be healthy enough. I’m even considering donating my body to science when I die. I haven’t looked into it yet and don’t know how to get started though.
I’m not against it. That being said, I’m not a donor on my license since that can override my husband’s abilities to make medical decisions for me. He knows I’d like to donate my organs in the right situation, but I leave that up to him.
Also, after witnessing friends deal with this with their child…I find that barbaric. They had to say goodbye to their child while he was intubated etc. and have him pass away in the surgical room where they weren’t permitted.
Organ donation is wonderful. Living donation is even better. I donated my kidney and still considering donating part of my liver in the future once my husband has his transplant
My sister died of a brain aneurysm in Ireland while on vacation. Now several Irish people have her donated organs. The think she would have liked that.
I am signed up to be an organ donor. A friend of mine passed away and since he was an organ donor the hospital tested him to see if he’d be a match for anyone on the waiting list for donation. He wound up being a confirmed match for six people so he was able to make multiple donations. Knowing he helped save six lives helped all of his loved ones grieve and we know he would’ve thought it was awesome that he was able to make a difference for them all.
When I’m done living they can have my organs. Use whatever is good for transplant then they can send the “damaged” organs to science, although my right eye won’t be very useful since I can’t really see much with that one
I used to not be an organ donor. I was always on the fence; it just felt kinda strange and uncomfortable to give your organs away, even if you’re not using them.
During 1st year of medical school we complete anatomy with real cadavers donated by people willing to give their bodies to science. It removed a lot of the fear of the unknown and mystery that was giving me pause. And I thought our donors were courageous and admirable people for helping teach the next generation of doctors. I signed up to be an organ donor that year.
I feel like organ donation is the most selfless act a person can make on their way out of this world. I’ve always wondered about the myth that the hospital will let you die, if they see you’re a donor. Other than that I’m all for it. I checked the organ donation box, but I’ve destroyed my body so I doubt anyone can use my leftovers.
I would only donate my organs to someone I really care about when I’m alive but when I’m dead I don’t want my organs rotting in the garbage somewhere. Give them to someone who needs them. Honestly I think organ donations should just be the default option. If you want to opt out you have to actually sign something opt out. What’s the point in letting good organs rot when a bunch of people need them.
My friend died of kidney failure while on the transplant list. Watching her get sicker every day while waiting for “the call” is brutal. I can’t even imagine what she went through.
I think everyone should be auto opted in to organ donation and you specifically have to opt out instead of how most states do the opposite.
I’d also like to see more people be opted in for bone marrow but I totally understand with the falling of 23andme and doge and Rfk jr “registry” being skeptical of giving up this data since you have to submit a swab and nefarious testing could be handled at the same time.
I feel like why not. Def organ donor on my license or whatever…. Now, I’ve “experienced” life, made some questionable choices and consumed some substances. So 🤷♂️ I imagine I don’t have what would be considered high quality parts…but if someone’s putting together a “budget build” they’re more than welcome to salvage what they can. That’s how I see it.
My 1 odd ball exception to this…. My eyes, And my baby making parts… leave my eyes and my dick n balls as they are and after that I don’t care. But I want those to stay with me. Just cuz.
I plan to donate whatever is needed – it’s on my license that I’m a donor. I won’t need any part of my body after I’m dead.
After all the useful parts are scavenged, I don’t care what happens. Throw me in the woods, use me for target practice, whatever. Just don’t embalm me or put me in a fancy box that serves no purpose but to leech money from my family in the name of grief.
I signed up the day I got my license. Once I’m not using it, if my organs can help someone else, why allow someone to die needlessly when I have what could help them survive? (Unless someone’s faith specifically prohibits it, although I personally would question the wisdom of that.)
I also am fine with whatever future doctors want to do with the rest. Test their suturing, practice scalpel work, study something on my tissue. Again, it could help someone down the road so why not, when I don’t need it? That’s like being rich and having your money buried with you instead of giving it to loved ones and charities.
I will leave my organs and whatever’s left can go to science. My husband wants his head cryogenically frozen, you know, just in case he can be revived in the future 🫠
After going through kidney failure 20 years ago, I realized how important it is. So I signed up online to be an organ donor after death. They got my kidneys working again, but not 100%, so they’re not viable. But my other organs could potentially save a lot of lives.
I have never considered NOT being an organ doner – that doesn’t make one bit of fucking sense to me.
You think that what happens with your body after you die is more important than saving someone else from dying?
I’m not saying people who think that are pieces of shit – everyone has their own opinion, but if I took that stance then I would call myself a piece of shit.
Never even gave it second thought. It just was the most obvious choice I could make. Had organ donation on my license since I first got it 18 years ago.
Me and husband are both organ donors. And if for some awful reason we’d have to make the decision, our kids would be as well. It’s just the right thing to do.
I couldnt be more for it, although I’m based as I have had a kidney transplant for almost 20 years that 100% saved my life, and gave me life, more importantly.
Yes, I have always said yes to this. I’m dead, let someone else use them to stay alive! The only reason to say no is if you are instead going to donate your body to science.
My dad died waiting for a lung transplant 35 years ago, he was 44 year young.
In a twist of fate, at about the same age he died, I was diagnosed with the same terminal disease. After suffering with the disease for years I was very sick and out of options. Then a miracle happened, an awesome selfless person and his family donated his wonderful perfect lungs. They were transplanted into my body which has excepted them as my own. That was nearly 7 years ago.
What is there to consider? A person that has passed doesn’t need their body any more. And enabling someone else to live through donation is a beautiful tribute to them.
I won’t need any of it when I’m dead, take whatever might be useful. I’m registered as a bone marrow donor too and if I was ever in a position to donate anything before I die then I wouldn’t hesitate.
I’m an organ donor I have no issue with it. I have felt proud of my family members that passed away who were organ donors that were able to improve the lives of others. I would also consider donating my body to any kind of research if my partner feels comfortable with it (if I die first). I want to be helpful, even in death.
If my organs are usable, take them! Circumstances to get and keep organs for transplant are so difficult, we need as many people as possible to be donors.
Always felt strongly in favor of it! When my mother passed, her eyes were donated.
I’m not sure who, but maybe one day we may lock eyes again. Even if not, it makes me feel bright knowing she was able to help someone.
I am currently pondering liver donation. Probably won’t be until late this year. I have to admit, I am scared of it. There is a real possibility of death. I’ll probably do it anyway.
Well I currently need a kidney so I feel pretty damn good about it. But will I donate mine? I’m not sure they’ll accept them with my autoimmune disease, honestly.
I think it’s selfish to NOT be an organ donor. If you’re brain dead, you don’t need them. Also, the whole “doctors don’t save you” thing has not been proven to be true. Living donation should be a choice however
Having worked in a dialysis unit, I’m all for donating organs. There is a severe organ shortage of all kinds, and people who need them face long waits and a lot of testing before getting one.
My whole body is so fucked up that I’ve decided to donate it to a medical school when I’m dead. I can just imagine a couple of poor first year students, slicing in and marveling at the mutations. It’s the only way I’ll ever get into Harvard.
My mom & dad were/are organ donation recipients. My younger brother(we’re both adopted) donated a kidney to our mom. My dad got a liver from a guy that died in a motorcycle accident. I wouldn’t have my dad today & my mom for those extra 5-6 years had they not received a donated organ.
Another brother, biological to mom & dad, is a nurse who approaches families about donating. Dude’s rock solid. I do church work with a guy that harvests organs for donation.
B/c of my parents & my older brother I never worried about being an organ donor. I figured that as long as one of them is alive they’ll ask how soon the docs can start ripping things out. Yes, morbid joking, but not far off. I’m totally fine giving everything up, body parts included, when I’m dead.
I think organ donation needs to be opt-out. That way, should someone opt out, the people evaluating their paperwork know what a pusillanimous, selfish piece of shit they are. No other penalty, just the shame it deserves. Never really heard a good argument against it, beyond medical reasons, obviously. Religion might be the worst excuse of all. Like, if your religion actively prevents you from helping others, from literally saving lives when it takes no effort on your part, effectively encouraging waste, and you accept this without objection, you’re just a waste of a human being. Hope that makes it clear.
We have an “opt out” system here in Scotland where you are automatically considered to be consenting to organ donation unless you specifically opt out. So I guess I’ll be donating mine.
Why would you not be an organ donor? Other than a very small number of people who’s religion says they have to be buried whole, why would you rather be buried with your organs instead of saving a life?
I’m doing it, entire body to science.
Two reasons: one, I was a preemie and modern medicine saved my life. Second, my BFF is a doctor and after I heard about how respectful they are to the deceased and their family, I was all in.
Absolutely an organ donor. One of my friends passed when he was 16 and gave all his organs, including his eyes and his skin. His life might have been cut short, but thanks to him, a lot of people have been able to live.
I haven’t signed my daughter’s card yet, I just can’t bring myself to do it, but if the unthinkable happens, I’d give her organs as well.
My parents had a stillborn before me and donated her body to science and I like to believe it is part of the reasons I am here today as I was a preemie (born at 32w in the 80s) and spent a long time in the NICU.
In 2005 I donated a kidney to a lady who needed a kidney more than I needed an extra. She wasn’t a family member, just some lady who needed to live. My life has not changed one iota. Unfortunately, my recipient died but only after 9 years of fighting like hell. If I had to do it again, every day and twice on sunday. It’s the right thing to do in these days seems to be a shortage of people willing to do that.
My daughter received a heart and liver from a wonderfully thoughtful woman who checked the organ donor box on her driver’s license. Next time you renew yours, please do someone a really big favor and check the donor box.
Put it on my license at 18. Valuable items that are useless to me should be used by others. Now I have a medical condition where my organs won’t be wanted so I’m giving my body is to science.
I couldn’t give a single fuck what happens to my body when I’m dead so I’m signed up for whatever organ harvesting or medical research the Australian healthcare system wants to use my body parts for. I hope there’s some organs in my body that are still useful when I die.
I’ll give what I can to family and friends while alive, and give it all away when I’m dead. I won’t need any of it at that point so just strip me for parts.
I’m an organ recipient. It saved my life. I haven’t yet been able to put into words how grateful I am to that man and his family. I hope I can pass along a gift as well when I am gone.

I’m not going to need it when I’m gone. might as well give it to someone that does. Have signed up (automatically as opt out here in uk)
If anything happens, i’ll be an organ donor. It’s all about someone having an after my life.
Yes I’ve signed up. I don’t understand why it’s opt in rather than opt out
My organs will be donated when I die. Why not? Could save a live and I obviously won’t need them anymore.
I checked the box on my driver’s license.
In truth people are kinda funny in that if they have not made a strong stance about something they usually just roll with the default option, so countries that have it the default of “I am an organ donor” but you are free to opt out if you want to, those countries have close to an 80% organ donation rate, they don’t have shortages like the rest of us.
Who doesn’t donate organs?!?! Besides jehovah witnesses are there seriously ppl that mark no on that?
Absolutely yes. I’ve had multiple family members live longer, healthy, happy lives because of a donor. The whole “they won’t save you!!!” thing is total bullshit, but people just continue to spread that lie. If I’m gone, someone else can have them. It gives people their lives back.
As the sister of an organ recipient, I am eternally grateful to the donor and their family.
ETA: I’m listed as a donor on my license.
There’s no reason to be against it. It should be mandatory
I’m not going to need themsowhy not give them to someone when it could prolong their life?
If there’s anything useful when I’m gone, may as well put it to use. Not like I’ll be using it.
My dad died while waiting on a lung transplant.
Surgical assistant here. Personally, I believe it’s one of the greatest things we can do as humans.
I’ve signed up to be a donor and in my will am giving my body to science. Maybe some future med student will dissect me. Good times.
I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone, because it can be abused, and there are bound to be more ethical ways to achieve whatever its goal is. I don’t recall ever considering it.
Do pianos count?
I really do not understand people that are not willing to. No matter how you lived your life, your last act is one of selfishness.
My mother would still be alive today if her donor hadn’t backed out. Technically it was the donors family they didn’t want to wait the hour it may have taken or the 30 minutes to prep her because she was a special case.
She died when I was 13.
If there is something of mine that can be used to save, or even improve another life, have at it
A loooong time ago, I was a stripper, and I remember a co-worker saying that organ donation wasn’t Christian because it ruined the body. I was like, you hav. e fake tits, tattoos, and piercings but you won’t donate an organ.
I wasn’t well liked as a stripper.
Of course I would, why wouldn’t I want something is no use to me go to someone who can use it?
I’m an organ donor, but my apologies to whoever gets them. They’re not even working that good now!
I signed up to be an organ donor when I got my driver’s license. No reason to bury valuable material.
Most of my family and close friends are donors. I am as well but would only donate an organ if I was dying.
When I’m alive I’m keeping them all even though I know I can live with 1 kidney, etc.
If my daughter or sister needed a kidney and I was a match then I would donate while living.
I’m not incentivizing the hospital to kill me and profit from my body parts
If I’m not using ’em anymore, why should I deny someone else the chance to have ’em?
In my country, everybody is a potencial organ donor by default. If you don’t want to donate, you have to make that very clear.
I am. If, i’m dead, doesn’t matter.
If I’m not using them, you can have them, but only then.
I’m a donor, although my organs may not be healthy enough. I’m even considering donating my body to science when I die. I haven’t looked into it yet and don’t know how to get started though.
I’m absolutely an organ donor. I don’t get why anyone would be against it. You’re dead… you won’t be needing them.
I’m happy to do it and would be glad for my organs to save someone else’s life. I won’t be needing them anymore.
I’m a registered donor. It seems a no-brainer to me. My organs won’t do me any good when I’m dead but might help someone else.
Organ donation is wonderful. Living donation is even better. I donated my kidney and still considering donating part of my liver in the future once my husband has his transplant
I have it on my health card that I am one. Why not. Not like they’re gonna have any other use lmao
My sister died of a brain aneurysm in Ireland while on vacation. Now several Irish people have her donated organs. The think she would have liked that.
Our son received a heart. We are now all organ donors and pray I have something useful to donate when I go.
If mine can be donated, why not?
I’m all-in; take whatever you need. I’ve needed glasses for decades, but if my corneas can help a blind person see, even poorly, go for it.
I mean it’s not like you can take your organs with you. Why not donate them?
Once I die they’re not my organs. I’m just borrowing this thing for about 70-80 years.
I’m listed as an organ doner on my license.
If I’m dead and someone can use my parts…. great
When I’m done living they can have my organs. Use whatever is good for transplant then they can send the “damaged” organs to science, although my right eye won’t be very useful since I can’t really see much with that one
If I was in the scenario of dying very soon id give my organs away for someone who can use it to live a longer life.
They can take whatever they can use, cremate the leftovers and plant me under a live oak.
You’re not gonna need them after you die. Let someone else live.
I think it’s a good thing. I’m one myself should I ever bite the dust too soon? (afriad those kidneys are pretty shot though! 😬)
Yes. I would rather some kid live a full life with my kidney than die while my organs are rotting 6 feet under.
I used to not be an organ donor. I was always on the fence; it just felt kinda strange and uncomfortable to give your organs away, even if you’re not using them.

I’m dead. What do I care? Take em.
yes, but id prefer to wait till im dead
I don’t personally own an organ but if I had one i think it would be a bit big to move.
Well, if I’m basically dead, I don’t really need them anymore.
I’ve received two. Was an organ donor long before I knew I needed them. I’m all in on medical miracles.
I would only donate my organs to someone I really care about when I’m alive but when I’m dead I don’t want my organs rotting in the garbage somewhere. Give them to someone who needs them. Honestly I think organ donations should just be the default option. If you want to opt out you have to actually sign something opt out. While I’m fine with my organs being donated upon my death, I don’t see myself ever donating any of them while I’m still alive.
My best friend, meanwhile, donated one of her kidneys to a total stranger several years ago…
Over my dead body.
I’m a donor…I don’t need my parts when I die.
My friend died of kidney failure while on the transplant list. Watching her get sicker every day while waiting for “the call” is brutal. I can’t even imagine what she went through.
Ok but I’m running out of kidneys
I think everyone should be auto opted in to organ donation and you specifically have to opt out instead of how most states do the opposite.

Sure. Why not? I won’t be using them when I’m dead, so if it can increase someone’s QOL, fine by me.
Definitely. I’ve actually signed up to donate my body to science. They cremate you for free, too.
Very strong pro donor. Grow up is it creeps you up. You know, Jerry Orback eyes are still alive! It’s suck an amazing gift.
Exemption for religious purposes. If you dont understand how important organ donation is you are just ignorant and selfish.
Take whatever the hell you need from the lump of flesh that used to be me to save somebody else.
I’ll be dead. They can do whatever they want with the corpse, I don’t need it anymore.
Very common where I live. Most people and their kids are signed up for it. It’s made very easy through our regular healthcard renewal process.
I’m a liver transplant recipient and ty y’all from the bottom of my heart 💚
I find it harmless, after i die no one is using them, they can take them. I dont know if anything will be of use tho haha
The Jewish community encourages this, it’s considered putting life before all else
It’s not like I’m going to need them when I’m dead, when I die I’m donating everything but my bones, those get cremated and turned into a tree
I signed up the day I got my license. Once I’m not using it, if my organs can help someone else, why allow someone to die needlessly when I have what could help them survive? (Unless someone’s faith specifically prohibits it, although I personally would question the wisdom of that.)

If the rest of me isn’t gonna live, may as well give someone else a shot.
I’ve seen The Island
I am a registered organ donor. My sister was as well. She died at 32. Her organs saved 4 people.
I’m a donor. If I’m dead, and they can be used, how could I possibly care.
I will leave my organs and whatever’s left can go to science. My husband wants his head cryogenically frozen, you know, just in case he can be revived in the future 🫠

Fine with me- I don’t need it and it can help someone else
Yes. I’m dead and I don’t need it. Also, if I needed an organ I want it – therefore because I’m not selfish, I donate.
I won’t need it when I am dead so let someone else have it that can use it. I am a donor after all.
I am an organ donor. If there’s no hope for me, then let there be hope for someone else. It’s the same reason I donate blood when I am able (O-).
Never even gave it second thought. It just was the most obvious choice I could make. Had organ donation on my license since I first got it 18 years ago.
I’m an organ donor. I feel good about it
I am an organ donor. I will be dead. If some part of me can save someone else, that is pretty cool.
I wanted to, and it was marked on my drivers license for a long time- but turns out, my connective tissue disorder disqualifies me as a candidate.
I’m not allowed due to autoimmune disease.
Me and husband are both organ donors. And if for some awful reason we’d have to make the decision, our kids would be as well. It’s just the right thing to do.

If I’m dead and someone else’s life could be saved or improved from my organs, please take them. I don’t need them anymore.
I have an uncle whose life was saved by a lung transplant and a friend who needs a kidney transplant. I am grateful to all organ donors.
I’m an organ donor I have no issue with it. I have felt proud of my family members that passed away who were organ donors that were able to improve the lives of others. I’m not sure who, but maybe one day we may lock eyes again. Even if not, it makes me feel bright knowing she was able to help someone.
I’d be dead without my wife’s kidney. My life is 100x better since my transplant. I’d say I’m pro-organ donation.
I am currently pondering liver donation. Probably won’t be until late this year. I have to admit, I am scared of it. There is a real possibility of death. I’ll probably do it anyway.
I’m currently still using mine, but I am a registered donor. I would like a say in who gets my organs in the unfortunate event where I die though.
I donated a kidney in 2004.
I have cadaver bone graphs
My family knows that upon my death, everything should be harvested.
Most everyone I know is an organ donor.
I have no idea why anyone would bot be.
Well I currently need a kidney so I feel pretty damn good about it. But will I donate mine? I’m not sure they’ll accept them with my autoimmune disease, honestly.
If I can save a life on my way out, great!
What use would I have for it if I can’t use it?
Living donor? No.
I think it’s selfish to NOT be an organ donor. If you’re brain dead, you don’t need them. Also, the whole “doctors don’t save you” thing has not been proven to be true. Living donation should be a choice however
My guts are all evil so when I’m gone the evil can carry on.
I was a living doner already so all the organs I have left will be donated 🙂
I’m a donor and I’m also on the bone marrow donor registry.
i want to make as many positive impacts on the world as possible, and i certainly won’t need my organs when i’m dead!
I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t. What are you going to need them for when you’re dead?
Happy to donate!
In my country you are an organ donor by default, unless you object. I think this system is great and should be used everywhere.
I’m for it, and I’d consider it yes.
I already donated a kidney. My body is going to science. Might as well make it as useful as possible before that
Why would you not be an organ donor? Other than a very small number of people who’s religion says they have to be buried whole, why would you rather be buried with your organs instead of saving a life?
I wish my country had an opt out system rather than an opt in. So many more lives could be saved.
I am an organ donor.
I’d like to keep them until they fail, but in the event I don’t get to use them, I’d like them to save someone.
I’m doing it, entire body to science.
Two reasons: one, I was a preemie and modern medicine saved my life. Second, my BFF is a doctor and after I heard about how respectful they are to the deceased and their family, I was all in.
For anyone not wanting too, why? My wife’s only alive because of 2x organ donations.
I am a donor and my spouse is a living donor.
I’ve met people who received organs from donors and it’s pretty incredible to listen to the stories. I’m a donor and hope everyone will consider it.
Yes, I’m an organ donor, but if my dad needs a kidney if his cancer comes back again, I can probs donate.
I received an organ 5.5 years ago. I’m so, so grateful!
Someone’s organ donation is keeping me alive. I’ll definitely return the favor.
I know I won’t be using them after I die, but I still feel very strongly about my organs leaving my body against my will. (.>_<.)
I absolutely plan on it when I die. I would also give up a kidney to someone in need while alive.
donate your organs.
