Side Hustle Idea, Golf Lessons but Not for Golf – Looking for Feedback

r/

I’m a 30-year-old middle school teacher and football and basketball coach and really love it (both parts, but in this case specifically the coaching part). I’ve been thinking about branching out and trying to do individual personal skills training for athletes in that age range, but that got me thinking.

Getting older, it can definitely be hard to work out or be motivated to go to a gym or run, etc. It can also be hard to get new hobbies, find new skills, or have the motivation to do some of the things we did in the past.

The idea I had: individual personal skills training for adults. Thinking like golf lessons, but for basketball/football/softball, not something people typically do or need “results” for. Maybe they play pickup or are in like a rec league or something.

The exact same thing as kids get, one on one skills for their sports, warm-ups, at home drills, just for adults. There are tons of specifics that would need to be figured out, not the least of which would be a price on it, but it feels like there might be something there.

I’d love to know if it’s something you feel there would be any level of market in, something people would find interesting, any kind of feedback would be

I’m paying $65/hr for a MMA coach and have no intention of stepping into the ring. I just want the skill set without having to deal with the nonsense / time wasting of group classes.

I’ve also got a guitar coach and the wife and I have a golf coach.

If I was going to play some sort of sportsball thing I would want a coach for that as well. Show me what to practice and I’ll do as much as I can on my own and then come back every week to show results/progress and get corrections then sent back out on my own to practice again.

I don’t see it, at least not instruction focused. But if you could just turn it into a fun way to exercise sure. Pick up basketball, or flag football, touch rugby. Sign up online. Get to play on your times. No waiting to play, no sitting if you lose. Just 30-60 mins of fun exercise. Then if someone wanted to get better for the games they can hire you for lessons.

    can’t stop laughing

So like basketball ball lessons? Or softball lessons?

Yea, idk man. Those who know how to play basketball won’t want to, and those who don’t know how to play, that ship has somewhat sailed. Very few nerdy non athletic dudes out there trying to run it at the local Y.

Don’t get me wrong, it only takes a few to make a nice little side hustle, but I don’t think there’s much of a market for it.

I think there’s a market for it. I’ve seen coaches for all sorts of other sports and hobbies. It wouldn’t hurt to search around marketplace or Craigslist in your area to see if anyone else is offering anything similar to you and what they charge. If you can’t find anything to compare, look for general personal trainers.

Check out the local community centers or wherever adult rec leagues meet up and maybe put up a poster with your qualifications and what you’re offering.

Would you just teach skills, or would you branch out into sport-specific strength training or strategy/tactics?

There are specific reasons why private golf (and tennis) lessons are common but lessons in other sports are not. Off the top of my head:

    • You can’t teach yourself golf. It’s not at all intuitive. You NEED a lesson from someone at some point if you’re ever going to play a respectable round.

    • Golf is a rich person’s sport. Many players have money for private lessons, not to mention thousands in clubs and green fees.

    • Golf is a lifetime sport. It’s played by adults well into their 80s. Adults spend money on lessons for a life skills. This isn’t true for any of the sports you listed.

    • Golf is played among businessmen and at country clubs. A corporate executive doesn’t want to shoot +20 on a round with colleagues or clients. Softball and basketball are fun sports played in neighborhood leagues. It doesn’t matter if you suck.

Perhaps there’s a bigger market teaching soccer moms how to actually play soccer?
