Other than character names and what they were like, and maybe one or two scenes I can’t for the love of god remember anything from the tv shows and movies and music I watched as a kid until 15 ish years old.
I remember reading so much fun facts and space books but I don’t remember any of it except maybe one or two?
If someone references with a quote from a childhood tv show it flies over my head and I feel terrible.
I have a friend who remembers every little detail of every book, tv, and movie too… and I feel really stupid
Is this normal?

Some people have memories like that, others don’t. Doesn’t make you stupid. Brains are just weird things in general. Check out the doorway effect and highway hypnosis.
Sure, I remember watching shows and movies, plus reading books as a little kid. I remember some characters, very few specific episodes. I remember overarching story lines or plots and some quotes, but super specific details? Unlikely.
I barely remember the majority of school from elementary through to junior high. Lots of high school is a total wipe too.
I have a better memory for things I’ve read and remembering I read something about whatever topic when it’s brought up and will furiously try to find that article to reference. I certainly don’t have it word for word stored in my noodle.
I also seem to have the best memory for music and not sure why. But, it seems music pulls people out of things like dementia, allowing vocalists to sing or musicians play their instruments they’ve otherwise forgotten how to perform.
All that said, I would say it’s pretty normal for most people to not remember a lot about things that happened 20+ years ago. Try not to be so hard on yourself about it.
I don’t remember books or tv unless I re read or watch it, I only remember movies I watched like 1000 times. I do remember a lot of songs though
My memory is crap, I don’t remember both childhood stuff and frankly a lot of adult stuff. I have favorite books that I re-read every few years and I remember those pretty well but unless it’s something I watch/read repeatedly, it’s likely to disappear from my memory altogether. Maybe I’m stupid or maybe that’s just how my memory works. OP also if you have some sort of mental health issues like ptsd, that can mess up your memory too.
I don’t remember much before my menstrual cycle started, tbh. I get a little sad when my friends get excited for Disney movies and my immediate thought is that I’ve never seen most of them. Then again, I watched a lot of Mary Kate & Ashley (that idr), played with dolls and my mom had me in activities. So idk, can’t remember. I do remember liking Junie B Jones books and my dad reading to me.
At this point, it is what it is. Some things stick.
