Caps-lock is a needless keyboard key

r/

Whenever I’ve needed to capitalize something holding SHIFT while typing was always good enough and effective. Caps-lock has to be turned on then off as while with shift you just let go when you’re done. (So it’s more efficient.)

I can’t think of a good reason to need caps-lock unless you wanna type whole words in caps, but really there shouldn’t be a need to type more than one whole word in all caps and if you are typing more than one whole word you’re probably being obnoxious on the internet and using caps-lock to yell.

Without Caps lock I wouldn’t have a key to rebind my Esc to :/

For some people holding the shift key can be difficult. Others prefer toggling instead of holding. Even others might just, idk… randomly prefer it?

If you REALLY want to argue about useless keys, id pose page up and down as much less useful buttons.

Every since I bought and used the Happy Hacking Keyboard, I basically consider the Caps Lock key at the left control key. I remap it every time because it’s just so useful there

Idk. Car dealerships use software for accounting, sales, and service. In all three areas, they are required to enter most of their data in all caps. Holding down the shift key would be annoying AF.

The keyboard is made with redundancy and accessibility in mind. For many functions, there is an alternative way to achieve that function. There are two sets of numbers (in a traditional keyboard) – two sets of arrow keys (three including WASD).

There are people less dexterous and tech savvy than you. They cannot reliably hold down shift and then press a key.

The keyboard was invented in a time where people were less savvy as a rule – as such the expected way to write was using capslock. Shift is the short cut.

I am a habitual user of capslock. I also prefer toggle crouch in games. I like the certainty of having to press it on and off rather than two keys at once.

If anything shift-caps is the redundant key. Why have a shortcut when capslock exists? But I appreciate that shift-caps exists for a reason too and that it is very useful to many people.

Nah I’ll take caps lock for my coding and certain applications that only work with all caps. I agree it’s unpopular at least to me!

I’ll be honest I use caps lock a lot when filling excel sheets at work where the format is specifically defined and certain terms or reference items are always to be capitalised. I also use it a lot when correcting auto filled data in a different software that strips formatting despite the output needing to be legible and having capital letters at appropriate places. Just because you don’t need something doesn’t mean something is useless.

Tell me you don’t at]ctually know how to type and just hunt and peck with 1 finger without telling me.

SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO YELL! A LOT! FOR A LONG TIME!

In all seriousness, I do believe all these buttons came about based on need at some point. And more likely profession. I know I don’t use them all and try to never use caps. Lol

My job entails spending 10 hour shifts typing item numbers like BGM32AMFT and SPXAWFK, and they have to be case sensitive. If I didn’t have a caps lock button I would probably quit.

I CANNOT TYPE THIS WAY WHERE IT IS ALL CAPS EASILY WITHOUT CAPS LOCK FUNCTION

Ok there is actual use for it. There are acronyms that needs to be all caps. There are many forms when filing that requires you to put in all caps.

There is also accessibility issue. Some people have hard time having to hold two keys at once.

I can also split hair and say maybe you would be open to idea that the LOCATION of current caps lock is useless. The function of caps-locks does have its use IMO.(another use for all caps there, for initialism)

Computers were originally for work, not home. I use caps lock for 80% of the typing I do at work. This is just an opinion based on wrong place, wrong time.
