I’ve been an office cleaner for 30 years. AMA

r/

I clean offices, usually there is no one working at the time but sometimes there is depending on the office hours. I work for a small family business in a large city in Canada. AMA or tell me what you wanted to tell your office cleaners.

If I’m mid-use on the toilet, and the cleaners come in and announce themselves, what is the socially appropriate thing to do?

I’ve always looked at office cleaning as a job you use as a stepping stone. How have you remained in the same job for 30 years? Have your aspirations always been office cleaning?

Have you ever been like 3 minutes late and office workers came in and started looking at you with hate ? It happened to me on my morning shift,I remember this lady had a picture of her all smiley with her family on the desk but her eyes were full of hate lol….

No question here but years ago I worked in an office and I would always speak to the cleaning crew because I often stayed late. Their spirit, hustle, and manners always blew me away

I’m latina so I would often speak to them in Spanish which was nice after a day of trying to fit in a non diverse office where you always felt a little like an outsider …

Anyway I always had so much respect for them and learned a lot and I think it’s a very respectful career

Do you learn much about the type of work people do or pick up on how their business works by being around?

Are people kind to you? So you ever feel like you’re being treated like less because you’re cleaning?

How well does cleaning work as a business for anyone thinking about starting? Any big blunders one could avoid?
