I’m afraid of getting my teeth pulled, I don’t know if it’s just people on the internet doing it for views or if it really does hurt. The extraction itself might not be that bad but afterwards when I’m recovering I heard hurts horribly
Getting 4 teeth pulled on may 2nd, will it hurt?

I don’t know, but I’m sure you’ll get a prescription for pain meds
Oh hell yes.
I’ve found that teeth extraction results in more “soreness” than pain.
Like, you feel that something’s wrong, but it’s not really painful per say.
Anyway, that was my experience. They’ll offer pain med, take it preventively (when leaving the dentist office) just in case.
Sounds like you’re getting wisdom teeth removed? You shouldn’t feel anything, primarily because they place you into a twilight sleep. (Explanation below in link).
https://greenvillefamilydentistrysc.com/what-is-twilight-sedation-dentistry/
You’ll feel discomfort after returning home. However they supply pain meds. There will be swelling and more than likely light bruising on your cheeks.
Do exactly what they tell you to do after returning home.
GL
nope
I’ve had all my teeth pulled, almost all with different dentists and surgeons (plus a couple I did myself) so I’d consider myself a bit of an expert in the subject 🥲the pulling itself doesn’t hurt due to the local anesthetic, but yes, once the anesthetic wears off it can hurt pretty good.
The level of pain depends on if it’s a surgical extraction or a more rough and rugged pulling, and the dentists methods of extraction. I’ve had some that hurt about the same as the recovery from a cavity filling, and some that were quite a bit worse.
HOWEVER, I will say that no extraction has hurt anywhere close to as bad as a root canal, that shit had me in tears laying in the fetal position in the bathtub for 2 days. Most extractions I had fully recovered after sleeping
Local or under General? I had 8 removed in 20 mins in surgery. Woke up like a puffer fish, wasn’t agonising pain, more discomfort for about 2 – 4 hrs then getting used to having less teeth. If did under Local, expect some pain, it’s going to be an uncomfortable hr or two as their removed. Try your best to ignore the teeth cracking sound
I had my wisdom teeth removed, no big deal.
I’d HIGHLY recommend you check your insurance for what’s covered.
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but I was fine with a couple of Advil.
Yeah it kinda sucks. I’ve never needed the prescribed pain killers after a tooth extraction, but I was definitely on a constant flow of ibuprofen for the next few days. 4 at once may warrant some stronger pain meds. Just make sure to take care of the wound sites and don’t knock loose the clot or you get dry socket, and that hurts bad.
No it’s fine, you’ll feel a lot of pressure then a crack when it releases. The site with feel mushy for a while the socket closes.
If your sore normal OTC painkillers.
Yes. Dentistry hasn’t advanced beyond the medieval era – but I think they give you a rag with some ether on it to huff and stick to bite down on.
I had my wisdom teeth pulled on Monday. Benzocaine (a topical anesthetic), novacaine (an injectable anesthetic), and nitrous were used during the procedure; and then I went home afterwards.
I needed pain meds for 2-3 days, but it wasn’t like, extreme? It was only bad enough that I needed anything more than Tylenol for the first day or so.
If you’re worried about pain, explain that to the oral surgeon and ask if they can just give you whatever the most effective thing they feel comfortable prescribing is. Which is how I got Tylenol with codeine and discovered that I am one of those people who don’t respond to Codeine at all, but I had some Gabapentin lying around anyways, and that did the trick.
It’ll be a bit challenging to eat for a week or so, especially if they are on opposite sides. (I would only let them pull one side and go back in a month for the other side)
Make sure that you don’t smoke for a week or so. The empty sockets will develop a blood clot.
If it gets disturbed and comes out, you can develop what’s called dry socket.
It is fairy painful and usually requires the dentist to place a medicated dressing over it daily or every other day for a while.
Nah, Tylenol and ibuprofen together actually work really well
Had all my teeth removed at once. Did not hurt during the removal. It did hurt later but it was nothing compared to the pain I was suffering with before. Healing pain is different. Just OTC pain meds were fine. And, this is serious, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS THE DENTIST GIVES YOU!!!! Good luck.
At some point, yeah.
It will be sore for a few days alternate Tylenol and Motrin you’ll be ok
It’s not going to not hurt.
You will be sore afterwards but take some paracetemol and ibuprofen and you’ll be fine.
For me my nerves are screwed up. Things like novacaine don’t work very long for me. As a result unless the dentist is really good it hurts like hell for me to get my teeth pulled. Like I recently had 15 teeth pulled. It was 40 minutes of getting punched in the face. Once they were out on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being real bad) I’d say the pain was a 2. I have more trouble with what I will call stab pain, vs bruise pain.
I had all four wisdom teeth out at once about a year ago.
I was prescribed codeine, but didn’t really end up needing them. I took one dose the night of the surgery day, but the next morning it didn’t hurt that badly so I just didn’t take them again.
I found it was more annoying than anything. I eat a lot of food, and it became a struggle. Every now and then I’d be pushing it and jam a bit of food up against the stitches and that’d hurt, but only momentarily.
I did take a lot of care to not dislodge the clots though. I have heard that dry socket can be incredibly painful, so I was super careful.
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different and everybody’s healing process is different. If your doctor does not prescribe pain meds, I would ask for them and make sure you use them.
If you notice, unusual swelling or unusual pain, make sure you get in touch with your doctor right away
I don’t think it will bother me, but you do you…. I hope it’s not too bad
You’re going to be numbed up but you will feel a lot of pulling, it’s going to be a bit sore afterwards but it goes away after a day usually
If they’re normal teeth there’ll be tenderness but shouldn’t be too bad.
Wisdom teeth didn’t hurt extracting but hurt as sensation returned but not so bad.
BUT FOLLOW ALL CARE INSTRUCTIONS
I sadly experienced dry socket after my wisdom extraction, where the blood clot fell out exposing nerves and bone and such. I don’t know why it fell out, happened while I was showering.
The most excruciating pain of my life. Be very gentle with the recovering area.
I had a tooth extraction last year just the 1 tooth so i can’t speak for 4 sorry, i was in absolute agony beforehand and was just so desperate for the pain to stop. My face had completely swollen from an infection and it was either take some antibiotics and potentially face a root canal or just extract the tooth immediately. Anaesthetic rarely works as well as it should with me, and this was obviously no exception. My dentist asked if i still wanted to go ahead with it and i practically begged for it to be removed regardless. The tooth was out in under 30 seconds. It was not a nice experience but it was sooo quick and i will say i cried like a baby afterwards (though not from pain? More of an overwhelmed feeling)
I had 7 pulled, one a week for 7 weeks. I became tolerant of the novacaine by tooth 5.
As long as the novacaine works, you’ll be fine. I don’t even remember the recovery, just the feeling of pliers pulling out teeth because the numbing agent stopped working.
say these words: percocet, vicodin, extra strength ibuprofen, extra strength Tylenol.
It’s the aftermath that’s shitty. Don’t fuck with the clot that forms bc there’s an increase chance of dry socket. When I had two molars pulled the injections were the worst part but after that it felt like a firm pressure on my jaw. My head didn’t hurt but my jaw was sore. The eating part was the horrible part for me bc it was around thanksgiving/christmas
Just have plenty of ice cream, popsicles, yogurt, and soup for all of your meals for the next 3-5 days. Once you heat your soup, let it cool down to just warm. They will likely recommend salt water gargling to keep infection away- do it!
I had my wisdom teeth removed, which is a full-blown dental surgery rather than an extraction. The pain was not too bad, it was just some soreness and swelling and I was fine win l with soft foods and ibuprofen for the first few days.
I’m deathly terrified of needles and stuff like that they had me so doped up I didn’t feel or cared what they were doing.
Once you’re numb you don’t feel pain.
Honestly the worst part is the numbness when you’re finished, your jaw will feel like a marshmallow for 4 hours or so. You’ll be sore too.
The recovery is what sucks, not the procedure.
I have only two teeth left. To me waiting on the local to wear off was the worst part. I’ve never needed anything other than ibuprofen for pain. Everyone reacts differently, don’t let others stories influence you in any way.
It shouldn’t hurt at the time when the dentist does it but I’d expect some pain post surgery.
I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled at once. The actual procedure didn’t hurt (though it was sorta uncomfortable). It was later on that night that turned bad. Yes, there was pain but it was more achy pain rather than sharp. My problem was the pain meds — they made me pretty ill, nauseous and dizzy. I spent an uncomfortable night, called the dentist the next day, and they prescribed me a different pain med. MUCH better after that.
Had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled . Taken back to squadbay with 6 Tylenol 3s and a 3day bedrest . Tylenol for any pain beyond
Youre gonna be sore thats for sure. But overall. Nah. You’ll be pretty medicated to really feel it. And at any time they are performing the extraction and you feel it. Do not hesitate to say so.
There is some discomfort after – I recommend using the pain meds that they give you for a few days and you will want to stock up on some soft foods to eat – think yogurts, cottage cheese and oatmeal and like mac and cheese. Follow the after care procedures too – they will give you instructions on how to do the care. Follow those.
Off topic: healing. The faster it heals, the less it will hurt. Vitamin C 4x-6x per day will make it heal faster and the quality of the gum tissue in the extracted area will be better. I speak from experience. It’s the frequency that matters, not the amount. Go to Walmart and get the 1000mg chewable Vitamin C tablets. Break a few into quarters and take a quarter of the tablet every 4-6 hours for about a month. You will thank me.
I had 4 teeth extracted in a hospital under general anaesthetic and that was ok but I also had a couple pulled at the dentist which REALLY messed me up! At one point his knee was on my chest as he pulled and twisted. It didnt hurt so much at the time but I could hear/feel the tooth crackling as he tries to work it out. Afterwards it ached and my mum tries to be nice and serve me spaghetti hoops (cos they’d be soft) but my mouth was still numb and they kept falling out. Also after the anaesthetic were off, turned out I’d bitten my lips a while bunch.
Sorry for the horror story but I had sooo much trouble with my teeth growing up.
I recently had a bunch pulled under twilight sleep. They give you a major tranq to put you in the stratosphere then start digging away. It was a bit uncomfortable afterwards but I had pain meds for it.
Note: over the years I’ve had very few problems with pain from dentistry. So that’s the comparison.
Ive had both my wisdom teeth, and a single tooth pulled.
Wisdom teeth i was knocked out, and you feel nothing. You wake up 2 min later and say “wow that was quick” not realizing it was an hour.
The other tooth pull i was awake for, but completely numbed up. You can feel things happening in your mouth and pressure, but you shouldnt feel any pain (if you do, TELL them). It took maybe 5 or so minutes and then were done.
In both cases as long as you follow post-op instructions and you have a halfway decent dentist you should be fine. But REALLY take care of it post op, because you do NOT want dry socket. Then you will feel pain.
Definitely get the pain med scrip filled. I had 2 teeth pulled in 2017 (a wisdom tooth that came in sideways, and the molar next to it ☹️). It wasn’t fun, but it was bearable. Gonna be a lot of bleeding. Don’t let that freak you out. They usually give you gauze wads to put in your jaws.
I have had 5 teeth pulled, 4 at one time. The injection for numbing was more painful than the actual pulling. The pulling was awkward, but it didn’t hurt. My dentist gave me Norco, I think, but an ice pack and 800mg ibuprofen worked better. I would literally fall asleep with an ice pack on my face. Stock up now on potatoes, rice, pudding, applesauce, ice cream, and so on. Please oh please DO NOT SMOKE. My first one I was dumb and dry socket was more painful than having all 4 pulled at once. But the ibuprofen and ice pack was my best solution.
I put off having an extraction for years due to anxiety but the pain got so bad I had no choice. Result: not so bad. Needed only moderate level of nonprescription painkiller for a few days afterwards. If you need it, do it—the anticipation is the worst part.
HELL YEAH!!!
Remember, it is not like pulling a loose tooth; assuming your teeth are firmly embedded in their sockets. I got my one tooth in the back pulled Monday and five days later it still hurts if I accidentally chew on that side. I am taking meds for the pain. A lot of drilling, pulling, cracking, splitting going on. Good luck and best wishes.
I’ve had a couple pulled, no pain whatsoever at the time or later. Took a couple ibuprofen right after and that was it. Maybe I got lucky?
I had my wisdom tooth pulled out and it took the dentist over an hour to extract that was back in the early 1990’s the rest had to be extracted in the hospital under full anaesthetic it really depends on whether you have a higher threshold for pain.
When I had my wisdom teeth out, the worst thing was the IV – apparently I pulled it out while I was unconcious and they had to put it back in, and my hand hurt for the next month.
They gave me Vicodin (weak bullshit, 5mg ones) and then 800mg ibuprofen that worked really well. I had no pain at all when I got my wisdom teeth removed, but I’d get these brrrutal stabbing headaches that I’ve never experienced before but the ibuprofen fixed that like a charm.
Honestly the worst part of the whole ordeal was having to eat soft food for over a week. That fucking sucked.
Nope
If it’s general anesthesia (you won’t know what happened)
If it’s local, they inject you with Novocain many times (just a pinch feeling). Then the numbness sets in and you just feel very small pressure but no pain. You can also ask for another shot usually if you nervous
Don’t worry about it. It sounds much scarier than it is.
I’ve had 12 teeth pulled. IMO it doesn’t hurt but there is a lot of pressure and tension and like a tightness feeling. I dont know how to describe it. If you’re super worried which it sounds like you are cause you’re posting on Reddit (which is totally valid I 100% get it) call your dentist and tell them you’re panicking and get anxiety meds. I did it last time. They gave me two p!lls and it was fantastic I barely remember a thing. You will need a ride to and from the office tho.
I had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed at once. I was awake for it, too. The recovery was sore for a few days, but it was a lot less pain than the toothaches leading up to the procedure.
When I had my wisdom teeth pulled they knocked me out and I woke up later with a swollen face. So no I guess the extraction didn’t hurt. The week after when my face was so sore was terrible though.
I had a molar removed under local anaesthetic this week. The first day it hurt a bit, but nothing painkillers couldn’t handle. Eating is a bit clumsy even if you stick to liquid foods. So is brushing teeth.
Yes
Nah I was completely fine both times. Molars.
Advil should be fine for your “pain”. It’s not as bad as others make it out to be.
No…it won’t hurt. They will numb you…a few stings from that, it’s not fun, but it’s not the end of the world.
No but only because it’s on 2nd May. If it were any other day it would be painful
The extraction doesn’t hurt, but it does hurt a lot once the anesthesia wears off. Day 2 is fine though.
I had 13 pulled on one setting. Including what was left of my wisdom teeth. Never hurt. Never felt a thing. No pain before, during, or after. All my worries were unfounded. I waited and waited before I finally had it done. I’m a new man now. Mushy mouth. But a new man.
Everyone has a different pain tolerance. I got all four wisdom teeth at once and drove myself home and only took Tylenol and ibuprofen for the minor pain. But I’ve heard other people say it laid them up for days
i had all four of my wisdom teeth plus a molar plus a molar six years ago. local anesthesia and they had to break one of them apart to get it out. honestly everything leading up to the surgery was just weeks of uncontrollable drooling levels of pain so once they were out there was just immediate and immense relief–so for me, it was fine. a little sore but that’s about it. i took ibuprofen for the swelling and just followed the aftercare instructions (which is important because you don’t want dry socket or an infection.)
i’ve had a much worse time with recovery from fillings, but that has more to do with inflamed tissue around my jaw, which has only become more hypermobile and probably arthritic at this point compared to six years ago (yay EDS.) plus the fillings are still sensitive months later, though mind you it’s now mostly to just temperature rather than also pressure.
It’ll hurt like hell if you don’t get them out. Worse if you do it yourself.
Numbing shot hurts worse than extraction.
I had a back molar removed last year and was scared to death for nothing. The dentist warned that it might be rough because the tooth had broken in half before (which is why I needed it extracted), but it didn’t hurt at all. He numbed me up really good and I felt a tiny bit of pressure and then it was done.
I took a Percocet when I got home expecting a lot of pain later, but that just made me sick. I iced it and laid down and would’ve been fine just taking some Advil. Felt fine the next day and didn’t even need to take any pain reliever after the day of.
I had all of my remaining baby teeth pulled out when I was 9 so my adult teeth would hurry up and come in and we could get started with braces (they were gonna be pretty messed up).
From what I recall with all the gauze packing, using saline filled syringes, taking Tylenol, gently slurping Jell-O and melted ice cream for a week…
…still hurt less than periods.
It depends a lot on how your teeth are growing. I had 2 teeth that were a simple extraction, i.e. just pulling hard. I had a couple shots of local anesthetic. During the procedure it didn’t hurt at all, and afterward I was fine with just Tylenol.
My other 2 wisdom teeth were growing sideways inside my jaw, and that was more difficult. A complication was that I was the only driver in my household, so I couldn’t afford to be fully sedated.
The oral surgeon gave a combination of local anesthetic and something in an IV. Even so, it was uncomfortable. After the medicines wore off, I had a lot of soreness. I had a prescription for a few days of a narcotic painkiller, but I only used a dose or two. The rest of the time I took acetaminophen and I think ibuprofen too.
Good luck with your procedure.
yes
I had a lot of teeth pulled. the days after will hurt and be uncomfortable. during it you’ll feel pressure but it won’t really hurt, just uncomfortable because they’re putting pressure and work in your mouth. the location will be sedated so there shouldn’t be any pain in that moment
Yes
