Why are people online so hateful?

I posted a thing about a show that I’m watching and the amount of hateful comments underneath it made me delete the post. People can be really horrible, I just talked about the characters that I like and got so many hateful comments. Why is everyone so mean? Like is it fun for them? I try and be as nice to as many people as I can on here but seems like some people are just out to be aholes
