Innocent until proven guilty should apply to the court of public opinion

r/

Just read an article from PC Gamer about how “Bethesda keeping Oblivions original SDTK from composer Jeremy Soule makes the allegations against him everyone else’s problem.” And rolled my eyes so hard I got dizzy.

The dude had one accuser and was NEVER charged with a crime, therefore he is still innocent, yet he’s been totally blacklisted and hasn’t composed since 2019 and was scrubbed from everyone’s official sites. Irreparable damage to one’s reputation that literally alters your life trajectory should have harsh penalties for A LOT of reasons besides the obvious ones IF they are indeed false allegations.

I also think all allegations need investigated, they shouldn’t be able to just be made and then never pursue the truth via an investigation since someone already felt it pertinent enough to make the allegation you can’t just then not do anything with it.

This is popular when spoken aloud but extremely unpopular in practice.

Court doesn’t need an investigation now either

It’s about ethics in games journalism.

If we want your thought to be a reality, the court system needs to get a LOT better at actually charging people for these crimes and not just slapping them on the wrist and letting them go.

We can’t just assume every rapist is a morally upstanding dude just because the courts are absolutely borked

Rapists and abusers depend on attitudes like this to keep abusing because their victims so rarely get treated fairly in court.

While I agree that the article sounds ridiculous (I’m sure he gets royalties but it’s part of the original game, they didn’t rehire him, and it would have cost a lot to re-score the game, probably enough that they would have scrapped the project).

But nah, it’s good that courts have such a higher standard of evidence but there are absolutely cases (think OJ) where it’s clear someone did a thing, but no one can prove it properly or the prosecution just fucks it up, and the court of public opinion should absolutely still do their thing.

If it were proven it wouldn’t be opinion tho

If an allegation is made that isn’t true, that person can pursue the accuser in court.
