I just got the staff at my group home fired.

r/

So there’s this staff at my group home that has been notoriously lazy and leaves us alone in the house for hours at a time.

On Saturday, she left three of us alone to take the one client she “bonds” with to the store for half an hour without inviting any of us three or even telling us that she was leaving (which is mandatory for her to do).

She was supposed to put dinner out (all food is locked in a fridge in the basement) and she did not bring up anything to eat before leaving (it was about 6p and she’s supposed to gather food around 5p). When she returned, she immediately left the house in her own car. I called her name, because I wanted to ask for something to eat; she either ignored me or didn’t hear because she was loudly talking to her cellphone. She was gone for another 1.5 hours.

Just a side note, I have an eating disorder. It’s very hard for me to ask for food, and when I actually get a hunger cue and get hungry, I NEED to eat!

Anyway, I just overheard the house manager say she would not be working here anymore, and I am pleased…..that is all.

Geez, that’s awful. I’m sorry you had to deal with that, but glad that management isn’t putting up with that shit.

No you didn’t. She got herself fired by being incompetent and negligent

Good for you for being an advocate for yourself and your own needs! That can be really scary, so I’m proud of you!

Tremendously proud of you not only for alerting the management but also for asking for your food!! That’s huge! Keep doing that! You seem really nice and I want you to be healthy!

I’ve worked in a few group homes. We were NEVER allowed to leave anyone. If I left for any reason I would have been fired. Maybe even put on a list so I could never work in one again. Everyone goes to the store or no one goes. You did awesome.

I work in adult assisted living and this is crossing the line from neglect into abuse. You did the right thing and it wouldn’t be insane to press charges if this happened multiple times.

One of my favorite jobs when I was younger was working in group homes.

I am so proud of you for speaking up.  I used to hate coworkers that played favorites or broke the rules.

You kept everyone safe and deserve to be rewarded.

Member of a care team here. Your food should never be locked away. That is a rights restriction.

Also, she may have been let go because she possible broke yours or someone else’s level of supervision.

I’m glad they did something about it. I’ve heard too many stories of people like that getting away with stuff like that just because the boss likes them. She didn’t deserve that position, and I’m happy you’ll have someone more responsible there.

Good riddance! You stuck up for not only yourself, but all the other kids. You rock!

I don’t know where you live or the rules for facilites, but as an example WI Medicaid rules for LTC facilites requires access to food and drink at any time:

You didn’t get them fired they got themselves fired.

I lived in a group home while in middle school. Some of the staff were terrible and showed blatant favoritism but thankfully they never did that. But we had to get our food from the main building, we had a kitchen but no food was allowed in the home. That would have sucked to not have the food. I’m sorry you dealt with that. You’re allowed to have a phone in the group home?

I have a beloved cousin who lives in a group home. I would be absolutely horrified if he had staff that treated him(and the others!) that way. I hope it gets better for you 💜💜💜

I would be too in your situation

You did the right thing. That is absolutely unacceptable behaviour for a carer.
