its literally so unnecessary. indigo easily blends in with blue and purple with hardly a visible difference and if anything is only in the acronym to be easier to pronounce. like, so you know theres actually a vowel between b and v. this has always been a pet peeve of mine and honestly ik its kinda dumb. but really, outside of roy g biv, indigo is hardly even MENTIONED. yes i like how it sounds as a word, but i just dont think it deserves to be part of the main colors.

Because 7 is a magical number to alot of cultures and so the rainbow was split into 7 colors. What else would you use that is somewhere between purple and blue?
The colors included are based on light waves and how they appear to the human eye.
Indigo is in the rainbow because Isaac Newton wanted seven colors to match ancient ideas about harmony (like the seven musical notes), apart from being rather smart, he was rather superstitious too.
Color is interesting. Perception and labeling of color is a cultural thing.
Green as a seperate color rather than a part of ‘blue’ is a relatively modern concept in some languages, and some cultures have multiple shades of blue that they regard as different colors. Indigo is different from blue in English, azure blue is different from blue in Italian, etc.

I agree. I ask my kids if they can pick out indigo from blue or indigo from violet, and they can’t.
As far as the rainbow is concerned, if you look closely, you’ll see a light blue band and a dark blue band. Newton called the light blue one blue and the dark blue one indigo, and it has stuck.
What are we going to do with that new color olo or however it was spelled?
Newton’s “indigo” was a blue colour with no violet admixture, his “blue” was a cyan.
I think there is a very pronounced difference between the cyan and the dark blue band in most rainbows.
Am I missing something here?

You all do know that the colours do the rainbow are just visible light at different wave lengths?
It’s not some arbitrary decision made by people to decide what colours are there.
Indigo is visible light at the second shortest wave length. It wasn’t decided that it should be in there. It is just in there. It’s nature.
It’s historical since Newton is the one who created the ROYGBIV, but I’ve been saying this for years. ROYGBV is far superior since indigo would beat tertiary color.
That being said, our eyes sense RGB, with orange, yellow, and violet as secondary/tertiary colors, so ROYGBV doesn’t even really work. Then, when you consider pigments and the primary colors are cyan, magenta, and yellow, you get CMY as the mnemonic.
Also the low wavelength colours of the rainbow are obviously grue, bleen, vindigo and iolet, what are you people seeing?

When ROYGBIV was first decided, what we consider blue nowadays was indigo, while what we consider cyan nowadays was considered blue. That’s why the modern ROYGBIV feels so awkward, as it’s actually using indigo as blue and indigo violet as indigo, leaving a huge missing chunk between green and blue where cyan resides
