AITA for reporting a girl after she made a rude comment about my brother?

r/

I (18 M) have had lots of troubles with a girl at my school – let’s call her Trisha. Trisha is in the same grade as me (senior in hs) and moved to our school in 8th grade. For as long as she’s been in our school, she’s always had some issue with me. To be honest, it’s mostly a bunch of dumb high school drama, and I can’t wait to leave it all behind after I graduate, but some examples include her refusing to use my preferred name and pronouns after I reminded her (I’m trans and came out in sophomore/junior year) and calling me disgusting. Thanks to my therapist I’ve since moved on from her spiteful comments, but the reason I bring them up now is because it could be a potential motive behind her comment she made.

Regardless, this situation happened after my brother “Ryan” (17 M) was in a bad car accident. He was staying in the hospital and had been away from school for a while. In one class, a teacher was rearranging seats and someone mentioned that Ryan was gone but pointed out where he normally sat so the teacher could account for his presence.

Trisha and I sat at the same table with a few other girls, and when someone pointed out Ryan’s absence, she turned to the girl next to her and asked about where Ryan was, even though I was sitting directly in front of her, but whatever. I chimed in and mentioned that Ryan was still in the hospital after his car crash. Trisha then says “oh – he’s dead. Done crashed his car, he’s dead.”

When I tell you my blood was boiling and I had to leave the classroom to stop myself from making a scene. I told a trusted teacher about what happened and she suggested that I report Trisha for her comment. I immediately reported her through an anonymous hotline and asked the other girls at the table to be witnesses if I needed. Thankfully, they were all very sweet and understanding and offered to help.

However, after telling this story to a different friend group, they accused me of overreacting, saying that she didn’t have malicious intentions. I thought I was right at first, but now I’m not so sure. Did I overreact? Am I the asshole?
