How hard do you work at your job?

r/

I used to work so hard at my job but it’s kinda getting me nowhere I’m grateful for the paycheck but other than that I will never make 200k from doing what I do either. So now I just do my job but don’t overwhelm myself. What about you? Is your job a little dead end ?

Not hard at all, it’s a reflection of my paycheck.

I’m a nurse. I don’t think it was hard but very stressful

  4. catcat1986 Avatar

I work pretty hard. I put in long hours in general, but if I need to take time off I do.

I have a who watches the watchmen kind of mentality. I believe someone shouldn’t be over your shoulder to ensure you do the right thing, you should just do it.

I was once told by a boss to work for the paycheck you want, not the paycheck you get. I did that for many years and was still underpaid, always given excuses as to why they could give me any more money. Now i work just enough to be able to get by, but i play the game a bit and talk myself up much more than I am and make what i do sound so much more impressive. I now make a decent amount more and see the payoff of perception over performance.

I work hard but also give myself breaks. My job entails a lot of mold and yucky breakage. My boss knows I do my best and my best entails whatever my body allows. Sometimes my health issues rear their ugly head and I have to leave work early. They don’t care as long as I make my hrs.

Well as a tradesman, there is only so far I can go unless I want to start my own company, which I absolutely do not. I’ve been a foreman and a general foreman, and while the extra money is nice, the extra responsibility is not. So is there room for me to go up? Yes. Do I want it? No. I’ll make my $120k/year, keep my stress levels to a minimum, and finish my career without being on ulcer medication. As far as how hard I work, I giver pretty hard. I like to set the standard actually. I’m the 50 something older guy around a bunch of twenty somethings who can still carry heavy stuff and swing that hammer better than most.

Previously I had a stressful job and was underpaid and usually overworked. I rarely took my vacations or take advantage of unlimited personal days. I was rewarded with being one of the first laid off during Covid. Point is you could work hard but if they like someone more even if they do less you will be let go.

Main job 9/10 most days, side job 5/10 and always trying to be as efficient as possible so I do cut corners if possible. Side gigs, they’re easy so 10/10.

I’m constantly on my feet at my job. Monday, I did 13k steps in 3 hours, but didn’t work the remaining 4 hours of my shift. Depending on the day, I average between 10-17k steps. Include in that 40-90+ flights of stairs. That doesn’t include the other physically demanding portions of my job.

Job, I’m a commuter railroad conductor.

I do the bare minimum. I do my job, and I do it as requested. But I don’t do anything extra. And if there’s a procedure we’re not supposed to do, but produces the same quality in shorter time, I’ll do it.

We don’t get paid enough to be exceptional employees. I’m not part of a union. I don’t get paid THAT well. My pay’s not too bad, so I do my job properly. But I’m not paid to care about improving the work past what is expected.

  13. RCM20 Avatar

I do the absolute bare minimum because I get paid the absolute bare minimum.

  14. Pinchaser71 Avatar

Going above and beyond only resulted in more work in my experience. I’ve since wisened up and do what’s required with my job, nothing more. They pinch a penny until it squeaks around here, no way anyone gets a raise

  15. hideous_coffee Avatar

The work comes and goes. It’s a lot more downtime than crunch time though.

  16. Professional_Mood823 Avatar

I worked so hard I had a mental breakdown and had to be sent to a mental hospital. I’m unable to go outside much anymore.

  17. HumanMycologist5795 Avatar

Sometimes, I work hard. Sometimes, I don’t. I pace myself do I do t get burned out, if I can..

  18. Bojangles315 Avatar

I go between working hard to not multiple times throughout the day. if I was on Adderall and working hard, an 8 hour day could be done in 2ish

  19. Ryanmiller70 Avatar

I get paid minimum wage, so I put in minimum effort. Just enough to look like I work harder than my coworkers so it’s less likely they’ll fire me, but still doing the bare minimum.

  20. KarmaticFox Avatar

I used to work pretty hard until I learned that the harder I worked, the more work I got. The harder I worked the more that was expected of me and the less that was expected of everyone else. Once I set the boundary that I’m not burning myself out for “the good of the team”, I was gaslit by my lazy coworkers to do more cause I was the “slow moving” one.

If I’m so slow then why am I the most essential person in the department? If I go on vacation or PTO, then their world comes crumbling down.

Anyway, I found the key to being marked as the one who goes “Above and Beyond”. It’s easy. Just do what you are expected to do. If you do a little overtime here and there, then that’s fine. If the boss asks you to do something, then do it. Don’t whine and cry about it with your coworkers. Somehow, the yearly performance review will be “Exceeds Expectations”. You’ll be marked as a hard worker just because you exist.

    Don’t burn yourself out.

I don’t really work hard at all. Most days do not require a lot other than looking over my area and equipment.

When things go wrong, then we kick it into high gear, but your average day at a power station is quite uneventful, which is good. You want that. Having high reliability and units available for when load demand calls for it is the name of the game.

Tonight, I did some fire extinguisher inspections and an inspection of one of the combustion turbine brushes and filters. Only took a couple hours to do. Now I’ll just walk my units down throughout the night until shift turnover.

I’ll probably do some reading. Brought Cannery Row and Grapes of Wrath to read.

Work for myself via zoom so some days I work a lot and pretty hard. Others less but I make my schedule

  23. MrVolOpt Avatar

I work 3 days a week, guaranteed 12 hours, but get everything done in 9. Not very hard at all.

  24. Appropriate_Tea9048 Avatar

I simply do my job the best I can. I don’t go above and beyond.

  25. Spirited_Concern_800 Avatar

Self employed Telehealth nurse practitioner. It’s not hard, but a lot of responsibility in place of that

  26. heyyouguyyyyy Avatar

Depends on the day. I always do what’s necessary. Wouldn’t say my job is HARD, but sometimes it’s long &/or weird hours & sometimes I put those on myself. But I love it so idgaf

  27. SirFelsenAxt Avatar

Most of the time absolutely not… I fill out forms, answer emails, and chit chat.

Every now and then someone tries to stab me in the neck with a sharpened toothbrush.

Which sucks, because then I have to fill out even more forms

I work at a steady pace all day. I never rush but don’t go slow either. I take my 15s. Most of my coworkers in my department don’t. They work much harder to meet deadlines. I get done what i get done then clock out. I generally help my coworkers when I’m able. The managers seem to like me and have bent over backwards to keep me even though i am not as productive and I’ve made it clear it’s only a paycheck and will quit the second I feel it no longer works for me

Figured out 30yrs ago…1. Never run someone else’s business without an equity share. 2. A large org will cut staff regardless. Ur record has zero to do with getting cut/keeping. 3. Fear keeps 99% of ppl in terrible jobs for less. 4. Mgrs hate ppl who have no debt ane savings. They can’t be bullied. 5. ALWAYS demand a raise and let it be known u expect more $. You get it. 6. Work is trading ur time for $. No more no less. Demand more, gaslight em back and they way overpay u because ur ‘a unique thinker’. 7. Be great at what u do, but also be aware of ur marketplace value.

I don’t work very hard anymore. But, I’ve been at my job for very long time, to that point where I’m good at it without even trying.

But, my advice to young workers: work just hard enough to be better than majority of the other workers, but so hard that you’re the best of the best cause that’s when you get used and abused. Work just hard enough to be perceived as valuable and you’ll get the respect from management without destroying yourself.

In fits and spurts. There are insanely stressful 10 days without a break work jams and then other times where there’s nothing. It’s sales, so you either deliver or you don’t, there is no “look busy”.

  32. Delicious_Image2970 Avatar

Extremely hard when asked but I can also sit around for a couple hours to balance it out and not feel bad.

Today I fell asleep for two hours waiting on weather at a worksite at two weeks on the road and no one mentioned it.

  33. Throwaway--2255 Avatar

    I work unarmed security.

I do a patrol every other hour to check for locked doors which takes me 10 minutes to walk the whole area. The rest of the time I am sitting in a guard shack letting in other worker vehicles who don’t have a badge. That only happens once every 3 to 6 times a week. The rest of the time there is nothing to do so I just play video games or scroll on my phone till I am waiting to go home.

Just enough not to get fired.

I feel like I work pretty hard but maintain a good work/life balance. I will always give more than 100% at my jobs and it has worked well for me. I’ve gotten promotions when i thought I was ready and deserving and I have a fair salary. Could I make more? Absolutely but I like that balance so I work as hard as I want to
