TIFU by being rude in a phone interview.

r/

Today I had a 10 minute phone interview. For a bit of context one of the screening questions (before interview) was if I had worked for 6+ months at my previous position. My previous position was SEASONAL and the job before that I was there for about a year and a half then had to get knee surgery. I had answered yes to the 6+ month question because I thought I could explain to them it was seasonal and my previous work experience showed commitment.

Some other context: I have been applying to multiple jobs simultaneously for the last 4 months and had landed one a few weeks ago. But they decided to cut my hours by half with no more guaranteed hours. And so now I was back to looking for another job.

Anyways, the interview happens.

She asks if I am at a position right now and I say yes and have only been there for a few weeks because they decided to cut my hours and that the company understood that I wanted to leave because of that. (this was my first screw up)

Then she asks about the job before that and I saw it was a seasonal job about 4 months long. (second screw up). She obviously has an immediate problem with it because it wasn’t 6 months. I understand that and begin to explain why that is and the job I had previously before that I had been there for a long time and left because of the surgery, then needed a temp job before leaving for school.

She reiterates that’s the policy and I’m just getting frustrated because there is absolutely no wiggle room for explaining within that. And she said they’re looking for a committed person and that because I was leaving my current job within just a few weeks (I told her it’s because they halved my hours). But that was it. It was over.

I got mad trying to explain why I didn’t understand that she would see my resume and still offer an interview without just emailing me to explain that. Which I was more rude and short than I should have been. Absolutely my fault in that department. Then she said she didn’t look at my resume and just the screening questions which then I became kind of mad about that too but whatever.

Anyways, at the end she said maybe next time I should answer those questions more thoroughly and answer truthfully. And I replied maybe next time I’ll apply to a more understanding company. Then hung up.

I’m so stupid. I know. I emailed her back and apologized.

TL;DR I told the interviewer I should apply to a more understanding company next time.

Not really an f up imo, your attitude in the interview wasn’t what messed up your chances cuz it sounds like she wasn’t gonna hire you anyway because of your work history

Well, you’ve thoroughly burned your bridges with that company so congrats, I guess.
