At the beginning of the year we housed a friend (we live in Iowa) after he was kicked out of his mom’s house in Nebraska with the expectation he’d work to get himself back on his feet. After about a month of floundering we told him he needed to be on his way so he made plans to move to Florida with his dad. He expressed some intention to come back to Iowa and asked if he could keep his belongings here until then, and we verbally agreed to hold them.
Cut to current day and we find out he’s been telling a very skewed version of his stay with us to others, including my wife’s sister who is a mutual friend. Claiming provably false things like how we made him pay for all the utilities, that we treated him like a live-in maid, etc. This really burnt the bridge for good and we no longer want to hold his things in our house.
We told him he had one week to arrange for the pick up of his things and he said he was going to have his other local friend get them – this was three days ago and I haven’t heard from him or his friend. At what point can we legally dispose of his things?
At no point were any contracts signed surrounding his stay with us, him leaving, or us holding onto his things – everything was negotiated verbally. Please let me know if I can provide any other pertinent info.
Thanks!

You need proof of that offer. And is one week reasonable given his circumstances ? If he’s in Florida and you’re in Iowa you’ll need time for him to arrange moving all of that and time to do that. There’s no black and white answer here.
