Riding with the windows down absolutely sucks and I can’t understand why people pretend to like it.

r/

Mainly on the highway or at the bare minimum going like 40 mph/65kmh. It’s so freaking loud. The air pressure inside hurts my ears. You can’t hear anything except the roaring wind.

Even in town I don’t really get the appeal. You’re smelling in all the exhaust from the cars around you. You’re smelling all the gross crap that’s blocked by the windows.

But what about the country? Oh yeah let’s have every bug available jump in the car plus the damn heat. Nah.

It’s all a conspiracy against you. We’re all pretending so you feel bad about it. But the jig is up, I guess…so now so are the windows.

  3. MochaMellie Avatar

agreed. plus I have long hair and when I open my window I can say goodbye to my vision lol.

  4. Aromatic-Elephant110 Avatar

I don’t have a car anymore but when I did, it didn’t have a functional air conditioner. So it was more about my comfort than anything else.

43°C here in summer, you can either open the windows or die

I guess that I must do a lot of pretending by driving my convertible with the top down whenever possible, including on the expressway at 75mph

  9. jondonbovi Avatar

It’s great on a non highway at this time of year.

  10. Sexy_Persian Avatar

Depends on the vibe. Highway, yeah it’s dumb to have it down, so much wind, no pleasure. But beach town 72 degrees outside, coasting at 25, listening to waves, the bar music passing by is sublime

  11. rynaco Avatar

I guess it depends on where you’re from. Back curvy roads of Tennessee so it’s a nice cool breeze with the shade of trees in the heat of summer. Amazing. Winter time heat on full blast windows down music cranked up. I’m having a good time. Middle of New York? Nah. Also sometimes after a long day of work all I want to hear is the roaring wind to drown out my own thoughts

You got us. It was always just pretend!

  15. No-Annual-7496 Avatar

Windows down on the highway or a fast road is a lot i agree. But on more local roads that don’t really go above 35 mph its sooo nice especially on a cool summer evening with your music playing 😫 that experience was what i was most excited about getting my license for

  16. Screech0604 Avatar

    Agreed. I hate it.

  17. Hettyc_Tracyn Avatar

If the car is hot because it’s been sitting in the sun with the windows up, you drive with them down, at least until it cools off enough inside the car for the ac to keep it cool…

  18. BigFluff_LittleFluff Avatar

Open the windows in a diagonal fashion, so divers front and opposite passenger rear.

Cools the car down and stops the wind noise.

  19. kvngk3n Avatar

There’s nothing better in life than a fresh breeze with the windows down

  20. gumption_boy Avatar

You’re smelling all the gross crap that’s blocked by the windows? Do you ever go outside?

  21. lizzpop2003 Avatar

I love it when people insist that people who like things they don’t are just pretending. What do I have to gain by pretending to like the windows down? How does pretending benefit me or my family in any way?

  24. Advanced_Evening2379 Avatar

I found in every car, for my driver window to be all the way down, there’s a perfect height for all other windows for the least amount of wind. In my current car both front windows all the way down with back windows down to my head. My wifes hair won’t even move at highway speed. Also my car has 16 speakers so music is still crisp

  25. Mufasa2020 Avatar

My dog loves it so I suffer thru, she loves it with her goggles on

  26. pachyfaeria Avatar

I like it when it’s between like 50-70 degrees out. I get really hot and idk something about it just feels good lol. But I only do like partially down, all the way is too much. I will say, my dad had a convertible when I was a teen and that I absolutely hated. So I can see why people don’t like having them down. I also can’t stand if the front windows are up and the back are down, ugh that sound is awful. 🥴

  27. SeanThatGuy Avatar

I think it sucks on the highway but it’s not bad when you’re cruising under 50 on a beautiful day.

  28. CoffeeGoblynn Avatar

I enjoy driving 30 in the country with the windows down partway on a sunny day. The wind is nice, the air is fresh, and I really like the breeze with the heat of the sun mixed in.

  29. FracturedConscious Avatar

    Ya gotta equalize the pressure

  30. DubsQuest Avatar

Sorry to hear your senses are so sensitive OP, it feels lovely to me

  31. Honeycove91 Avatar

Windows down is the worst unless you’re trying to get bugs and bad smells in your car then it’s great

  32. Gold_Telephone_7192 Avatar

I like the warmth, I like the breeze, it doesn’t hurt my ears. If I have the windows down I’m not trying to have a conversation, I’m just listening to music and vibing. I very rarely smell exhaust from cars around me or gross crap and I’ve never had more than the occasional fly fly into my car and then fly back out.

  33. Fear0742 Avatar

I’ve got a wrx and a nice system. Every once in a while I love blasting down the freeway with the windows down. Especially when it’s in the 70s and 80s. It gets rough in arizona for 6 months so I enjoy it when I can.

  34. Necessary-Sock7075 Avatar

I rip and grip darts and farts, and break hearts. You better hope to the good Lord Almighty (THE redeemer) that the window is down.

  35. meh-unimpressed Avatar

Do you crack the back windows? That’s how you relieve the loud pressure that hurts your ears. Front windows all the way down, back windows about halfway down. Problem solved because then the air coming in has an exit. Windows down when it’s 75-80° is delightful.

  36. speedkillz23 Avatar

My a/c is broken. But either way i like it.

  37. Affectionate-Key-265 Avatar

I’ve never understood the smelling exhaust thing. Like do you complain about exhaust when walking on the side walk of a bust street? Wouldn’t it have just as much? And how fast are you going that you can’t hear anything? Sure there is a sound but you might want to get your hearing checked if you can’t hear anything becuase of it.

  38. BoujeeGothBB Avatar

I live in LA, so it’s pretty much stop and go- not a lot of wind or long stretches where the speed limit is above 35 so I personally love it 🙂

  39. LostExile7555 Avatar

I agree with you when it comes to high speeds, but rolling around the countryside at 20mph is pretty awesome.

  40. rizaroni Avatar

Hmm, this might be because of where you live. The air is really fresh in my area and there are no bugs flying in. But upvote because this seems unpopular to me!

  41. tony22233 Avatar

I love windows down in town. Not so much in the freeway.

  42. BernieTheDachshund Avatar

You must not be a dog lol.

  43. Immediate_Bet_2859 Avatar

If you are going super fast or if your whole life is lived in urban areas without fresh air then I agree.  If you’re out in the woods going kinda slow on a nice day then it’s really nice.  Nothing is good 100% of the time

  44. Coyoteatemybowtie Avatar

Wow an actual unpopular opinion, I fully disagree with you, I love the wind in my face, must up and the fresh air. Sure if you stuck behind a diesel you may want to roll the windows up but that doesn’t happen too often and only is bothersome if you’re going slow. My biggest regret with my current car is not getting a convertible.

  45. spiderodoom Avatar

Well I usually roll up my windows on the highway, so no argument there, more like a strawman you’ve set up. But on main roads going like 25-35 mph, I’ll absolutely roll my windows down. I like feeling the wind breeze on my arm, I like hearing sounds more than just my music, and I enjoy seeing things without the window tint.

  46. imtiredboss-_- Avatar

Well no shit only idiots are going fast with windows down lol. I like to cruise a nice 35 mph mountain road with my windows down, not when I’m going 80 on the interstate lmao

  47. sneezhousing Avatar

    >why people pretend to like it.

News flash people like different things they aren’t pretending

I won’t do it on highway for same reasons you listed. However I love doing when the weather is right in the street

  48. Vic-123-ma Avatar

    IT hUrTs my eArS……🤦🏽‍♂️

  49. dong_tea Avatar

Total agreement here. Going anywhere over 30ish MPH (which is most roads) the wind get too loud and annoying to enjoy it.

  50. Consistent-Raisin936 Avatar

OMG. Not only do I love the window down, I love riding a motorcycle where you can smell LITERALLY EVERYTHING around you even more. And the wind is just slamming you in the face.

you might have one of those sensory issues where you don’t like too much input.

  51. lostknight0727 Avatar

Air pressure? Are you only rolling one window down? If the weather is nice and it’s less than 90F, I will have my driver window down, with the rear passenger window cracked. There are no issues with pressure or noise.

  52. Expensive_Hermes Avatar

Just don’t buy a Jeep. It’s definitely a Jeep thing.

  53. nippppster Avatar

It’s nice to feel the fresh air when driving in town, but yeah it sucks on the highway. I usually roll up my window if I go over around 50 mph.

  54. mr2jay Avatar

You must really hate convertibles then

  55. Acrobatic-Ad-3335 Avatar

I agree! But my AC is broken & it’s not a priority☹️ thankfully we have a sunroof, it’s so much quieter than the windows when it’s open, & doesn’t do the same air pressure thing. At least, imo.

  56. WarningNo7338 Avatar

something that a lot of people didn’t mention yet is that it also depends on the design of the car. there are cars that suffer much less from the noise than others.

personally i’m not a big fan unless i’m driving slow and it’s not too hot outside but some people i know did have cars where the noise was significantly lower

  57. eL_MoJo Avatar

As long as you open windows on both sides of the car it’s fine. If you open one window or even worse one window half it’s horrible.

  60. darthkarja Avatar

Last winter I was driving down the highway doing 75mph with the windows down when it was 10°F. I love the windows down

  61. DJFrankyFrank Avatar

Yeah, the AC in my black sedan is broken. So regardless of how you feel about it, my windows are rolled down, regardless of speed. MAYBE I’ll roll them up halfway, if I’m doing Speed Racer speeds

  62. Parallax-Jack Avatar

Who tf drives down a highway with their windows down

  63. Texas43647 Avatar

I love it, it’s very elemental and makes me feel alive. Similar vibe to walking barefoot or getting soaked in the rain.

  70. DipYoChip Avatar

You’ve never driven a car without ac have you?

  71. DevoidHT Avatar

Going more than 50-60mph it starts getting annoying but a casual drive in the summer with the windows down is one of the best feelings in the world.

  72. TheresACrossroad Avatar

Lmao dogshit opinion, good job. Nobody i know likes windows down on the highway, aside from a sun roof, which doesn’t really have the same effect. Windows down off the highway when the weather is nice is mandatory. I don’t live in NYC so it doesn’t smell like garbage constantly. The fresh air is great. Better than stale car air.
