Why does this double standard exist? Boobs aren’t inherently sexual, they’re just a part of our body. So are our legs. And most women aren’t going out in bikinis, i just mean something that shows your figure
Women’s bodies, however attractive, are not inherently sexual

I feel like this more of a women hating women thing, I don’t know any dudes that think that way.
a guy walking around without a shirt in public will get profiled as a douche if he’s not fat and a gross if he’s fat. if he’s hairy, automatically profiled as gross regardless of the body type. it’s just different adjectives but both are scrutinized
The Puritans have a LOOOONG reach.
Because men and women are different, physically, mentally and sexually.
I’ll say that I’ve met people who look down on both. When I was growing up, my mom always muttered negative things when she saw either a scantily-clad woman or a shirtless man.
When a man is shirtless, a woman often says ” Put it back on.” so the standard may not be exactly the same but in my experience, it’s best to just keep your clothes on no matter what gender you are unless you’re at home or in a confined space. Half the guys I see walking around with their shirts off do not have a physique that is flattering enough for that kind of activity. Even if they did I would still find it weird if we weren’t at the beach.
Because we already lack self respect.
Because people, especially men, give power to boobs, and when they’re out in the open some men can’t control themselves. No woman is trying to SA a scantily-cladded man. No woman has terabytes of pictures of titties on their hard drives, or swaps and shares pictures of boobs or naked women with their friends. No woman is paying a man to show his chest. No woman is trying to attach her mouth to his chest. No woman is seeking to see men naked in general, band capitalizing on his nudity. You understand? Supply and demand.
Because in patriarchal theory, a woman has one, exactly one, owner. It is either her father or her husband. She is supposed to cover herself from everyone besides her husband.
For men, no such rules exist.
While this isn’t practiced in its strict way in the West anymore, the principles of thought are still very much alive.
You know the answer to this already and it’s as shit as you think.
Good old societal double standards derived from religious dogma.
Rules for thee not for me.
Because when it comes to sexuality, most men are visually oriented, however, women for the most part or not.
Is this fair? No.
Is it a ridiculous double standard? Yes
Are you going to be able to change it? No
The strange thing is, the vast majority of women in the world perpetuate this, while complaining about it.
Men- the rulers decided through organized religion that those body parts are sexual and used them to subjugate women
I get what you’re saying, but they’re not like legs. Boobs are secondary sexual characteristics. And they may not be involved in reproduction but are very much sexual, and very much a huge factor (bioloigically and culturally) to instill sexual atraction.
From a conservative Latin American family perspective, I can tell you is more of a we know that SHE knows sort of thing. And yup it sucks. And yea too bad for us A cups 😂
Ye olde double standard.
It’s amazing these days that very rarely do you see men walking around with no shirts on. When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, if it was hot, boys, men would take off their shirts and relax, ride our bikes, mow the lawn, now unless you’re swimming or sitting by a pool no one hardly takes off their shirts.
Because the mind-your-own-business people never mind their fucking business
Because double standards are bullshit.
Nipples are nipples.
I would beg to differ. Boobs are inherently sexual. Yes they’re meant to feed babies, but before childbirth what are they for? They’re sexual for a few reasons. Do some women not get turned on or aroused by touching them and nipple play. I even seen a few instances on here where some women claim they can orgasm from nipple play alone. The other part is that they are sexualized in modern culture. Boobs cause arousal in both men and women. So I guess I’m saying that showing your sexual bits off in public seems degrading or disrespectful to yourself.
Men and women are also viewed very differently. Men are visually stimulated vs women being more emotionally stimulated. A man seeing a woman showing more skin or leaving little to the imagination will look 9 times out of 10. They will enjoy the little gift of a naughty view then move on. Most women I’ve spoken to don’t seem to care much if a man is shirtless unless he’s Hollywood hot.
and this, children, is how OP discovered about the patriarchy
Society has been brainwashed to believe alot of crap
I’m all for free boobies… well except the old droopy ones
People are dumb, puritanical assholes are particularly dumb, and nobody wants to call out puritanical assholes to their face for being dumb because that would be ‘rude’ and most people are conflict-averse.
A shirtless woman doesn’t respect herself and a shirtless man doesn’t respect others / the public, is what people might say. I believe western culture simply attributes more value to a woman’s body. Historically women’s bodies have been covered up more and for a way longer time than men’s bodies in the western world, making them a much rarer sight. Their role in reproduction, up until very recently the main purpose of life in most societies, may have conferred a near sacred status upon women’s bodies. We can see this in the arts for example where over thousands of years the female body has been idealized more than the male body, albeit often through the eyes of male artists. From ancient Venus statuettes up to 20th century muses and super models. (Idealization of the male body in art has occurred as well, e.g. in ancient Greece or in the Renaissance but not as consistently throughout history.)
Of course none of this matters – a woman’s self-respect cannot be measured by the amount of clothing she wears – if one accepts the notion of full personal autonomy. But that’s a relatively recent notion, prevalent only countries like The Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries: https://www.worldvaluessurvey.org/images/Cultural_map_WVS4_1996.jpg.
You’re being dishonest with the criticism. Men get criticized but with different forms. Women get criticized for not respecting herself. Men get criticized for not respecting others.
It’s just misogyny. Literally no deeper than that.
Women wear more revealing fashions. Look at celebrities in red carpet and look men at suits and what women wear.
Boobs are pretty sexual ngl. It’s not my brain that thinks that.
I don’t think it purely originated with misogyny, but people who were misogynists surely had their take on it too. When any part of the body is always covered, it becomes fetishized. That’s why shirtless men don’t trigger the same reactions as shirtless women. But if a man’s penis were visible, it would be shocking. People became more clothed in the Nothern hemisphere because of wintertime and that created nudity taboos.
I go to nude beaches in the summer. You become desensitized to all of it eventually. There are also many indigenous societies around the world, particularly in the Amazon, Africa and Oceania, where women are topless all the time.
Since taking testosterone, I have become a lot more exhibitionist. I’ve talked to other men on testosterone as well as FTM trans and they say the same thing. The desire to be shirtless as much as possible is stronger. Androgens seem to promote a desire for more nudity to advertise physical fitness. So I think there is a hormonal difference as well. Men want to advertise their bodies and any secondary sex characteristic that is disrobed may be sexualized under this gaze, whether they are assessing male competitor fitness or female desirability.
It does also seem that physicality matters much more to men. Men assess attraction based on youth and fitness, whereas with women it’s more about male resources. Again, I’ve had this conversation with many men and FTMs and it seems that testosterone promotes this kind of gaze. No doubt reinforced by social norms.
That said… I think whether a woman is clothed very conservatively or totally nude on a beach, they won’t be able to escape the male gaze. It’s part and parcel with being a man. Most of the cities in my country allow women to go topless anywhere, just like men… but few women avail themselves of it. So clearly there’s more to it than just misogyny.
Depends on your society. Men in Afghanistan must eat times and have a full beard.
Men and women in some African countries will be happily topless.
Women can be pantsless and men can be shirtless but if its the other way around people are like “whoa what”
Seriously, weather permitted, you’ll see lots of girls wearing vagina high pants/shorts/thongs, and its perfectly fine.
Shirtless men, nuff said.
But reverse the trend? People will flip their tops
This is actually more of an American problem. Europeans have a much more casual view on topless women. Americans seem to consider it sexual as the majority of the time they see naked breasts in real life is either their spouse or if unmarried during a sexual situation
