I used to be able to do this but once I got in my 50s I typically have to get up to pee once or twice every night.
Yeah of course it’s normal. If you’re genuinely waking up constantly in the night you need to see a doctor about getting a sleep study done, that’s awful for both your physical and mental health.
I realize I’m one of the lucky ones but yes, it takes me about 1-2 mins to fall asleep and then I wake up 7-8 hours later in the morning.

You should go to your doctor and ask about it, and potentially get a sleep study done, I could be you have something like sleep apnea where you’re subconsciously holding your breath in your sleep which wakes you back up.
Not a doctor but a broken sleep pattern can be indicative of a bigger problem.
Such as apnea, where you briefly stop breathing while you’re sleeping and the condition can get worse with age.
Stress, where your brain can’t fully relax enough to sleep
Or some other issue that keeps waking you up.
I suggest you get a sleep study done or start tracking your sleep to see if you notice anything weird and then consult a doctor

This was happening to me and I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. Now I sleep much better with a mask that helps me breathe. A sleep study would be beneficial to see if you are sleeping normally.
Yes it’s normal. The only time I wake up in the middle of the night is if I’ve had a bad dream, I need to use the toilet, or if something external like loud thunder or someone in the kitchen making noises
As a person who occasionally suffers from insomnia, yes solid sleep is normal, no insomnia isn’t, but there’s good news. It’s manageable if you take the right steps. One of them is to try to work on your anxiety. I managed to get my broken sleep in order by creating certain habits for myself, such as mindfulness, consistent workout schedule, eating healthy and well, etc.
As soon as I break out of that routine, my insomnia triggers, currently suffering cuz of it, cuz I’ve been in a rut lately

There is plenty of evidence that sleeping throughout the night is very modern (as recent as only a few hundred years ago) and that our recent ancestors used to wake during the night for a period of a few hours before going back to bed. Many people today still find themselves waking in the middle of the night and unable to return to sleep for a period.

It is normal to sleep through the night, waking only once or twice and then go back to sleep immediately. If that is not what you do, don’t try to figure out what is happening, just tell a doctor. You need a sleep study.
Yeah I generally stay asleep all night. about half the time I get up to pee once. If I’m really strict about limiting water a few hours before bed I’ll stay asleep all night. I don’t consume caffeine ever, have a completely blacked out bedroom, I don’t view my phone while laying in bed, nor is there a TV in the room. I try to eat dinner at least three hours before bed. I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t use cannabis. All of this makes me a very healthy sleeper. It doesn’t make it perfect though. When I’m stressed I’m waking up constantly. Can’t entirely avoid that.
I am generally I light sleeper. I will wake up a couple times a night but I turn over and go right back to sleep.
That said there are nights when I do sleep through the night, and I’m glad for it.
Personally working out changed my sleep pattern from what you described to what you idolize. Exhaustion makes sleep easy, if not, you need a doctor.

I had a girlfriend like that. Nothing seemed to wake her up. My apartment’s fire alarm went off one night, and I spent 5 minutes trying to wake her up. Then she asked what the noise was.
I know I wake up to roll over and such. I also sleep randomly. I can go to bed at the same time, with an alarm set for the same time. But I sometimes won’t fall asleep for hours. Other times, I wake up an hour before the alarm and eventually just get out of bed, let alone hitting snooze.
At 46, I get up to pee at least twice – maybe 3 times if the dog wakes up.
To the best of my knowledge, I have never in my adult life ever slept for 7-8hrs without waking up.

Ahhh yes I remember the days before kids when I would actually wake up feeling rested. What I would give for a sleep like that again!
That’s the norm. Failing to do so is often anxiety based (tired arms/legs, sore joints? Dry mouth, cold nose and fingers? headaches?) or sleep apnea (snore? Sleep on your back?). Check online for symptoms of both of those, and see a doctor about either of them. Both are treatable. It could be something else too but those are the two main culprits.
Once I fall asleep I sleep straight thru until morning 6-8hrs(unless I drink too much water before bed. I’m also fairly active every day and nearly 50.
I wasn’t always like this. Within the past decade I have decided to live a healthy life and that’s when I began to achieve this.
Waking up rested and ready(around 5-6am without an alarm)to go is a wonderful thing.

When I was younger, yes. I would actually sleep through my alarm clock. Now that I’m in my 50’s I wake up every hour due to assorted pains. It has been this way for the past 15 years and will probably continue until I die. It sucks.

Yep. I’ve found that a routine is the most important thing. Every night I get tired enough to fall asleep around 10 or 11 and then I typically sleep solidly until 6-6:30.
I used to work retail with sporadic shifts (like 3AM-12PM one day then 2PM-11PM the next) and it wasn’t possible to sleep well. I’d take drugs to sleep and be awake, caffeine pills, melatonin, even Benadryl to sleep some nights. A stable routine is really, really important.
I also don’t drink alcohol except for a handful of occasions each year so that helps too. Alcohol really messes with sleep quality.

As I grow older I’ve noticed that what I eat in the evening drastically change my sleep quality.
For example if I eat pasta i will wake up several times a night.
I sleep at most 5 hours. Sometimes I wish there was no need to sleep. I have became a professional napper. Never was much as sleeping most my life.
It sounds cliche but when I exercise regularly, I sleep for 8 hours straight. 2-3 days of not exercising and I start waking up in the middle of the night. Also, take magnesium.
Not sure what magical fairy dust these ‘perfect sleepers’ are using, but I’ve been waking up 3-4 times every night for as long as I can remember. My doctor says it’s actually pretty common, especially for women in their 30s. Still annoying though.

Unless I’ve had a super rough night at work, it takes hours to fall asleep for maybe 2-3 hours. I think the most i slept without meds or being extremely drained was 4 hours. I’ll fall asleep around 10AM and wake up at noon, though I always think it’s later. I’ve learned that when i do wake up, don’t look at the phone, and don’t open my eyes all the way so that I fully wake up, and hopefully I’ll fall asleep. I’ve tried just about everything and nothing helps. Melatonin, benadryl, nyquil, tea, no screentime, etc. The only thing that has ever helped has been weed (which i can’t currently use). Many people im around start snoring as soon as their head hits the pillow and I am so jealous.
If I am too anxious I won’t get much sleep as you said, saying camping I won’t be able to get much sleep as home, I get at least 4hrs uninterrupted

I used to wake up many times each night and could accurately know what time it was because of such poor sleep. Then my brother died and we strongly believed it was from sleep apnea. Several people suggested I get checked. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea Starting CPAP was a life changer. I can’t overstate the difference it made. They said I likely hadn’t slept in years, at least not what they consider sleep. I never got past level two sleep in my study and stopped breathing about every third breath. I’ve been successfully treated for 20 years now. Get a sleep study scheduled.

I wake up a couple of times during the night since I was little needing to pee. It’s always been this way. Kidney levels, liver, blood sugar, everything normal, but I can’t sleep through the night and never have because of my bladder.

The only times in my life where I slept 5+ hours straight through without interruption were when I had horrendous jetlag after flying home from Asia to the East Coast of the US that day, and when I was very sick and on potent medication.
On a good night, I might get 3 straight hours, then two more blocks of 90 or so.
I wake up several times a night, but usually it’s only for a few seconds. If I’ve got something weighing on my mind, sometimes I’ll toss and turn, but that’s pretty rare.
Yeah if you literally never sleep for more than a couple hours that fits into the criteria of chronic insomnia. This is something a doctor might be able to help with.
Have other people reported you snoring or stop breathing at night? That’s sleep apnea and it’s pretty common. Getting sleep disorders treated can really change your life, you should get to the doctor about it.

I used to wake up at least a couple times a night and often then struggled to get back to sleep. A couple months ago I finally listened to the easiest advice you hear all the time and stopped spending time on my phone in bed before sleep. Now I read instead. I was shocked at what an immediate difference it made for me. I often sleep through the night now, and even when I do wake up I can usually fall back asleep almost immediately.

I wake up when there is a loud noise (white machine going for smaller noises), if I have a nightmare (although my life is a nightmare so w/e), if I have to pee (I stop drinking fluids before bed), or if someone wakes me (I sleep alone…ties in with the nightmare life thing). I can’t go to sleep when it’s too hot (window is open) or too cold (open just a tad) or if there is light coming through enough (I close the blinds and turn off unnecessary electronics). I get in bed, get comfy, meditate, and I’m out. Until one of the above happens or I wake up on my own, usually around 6:30 (my alarm goes off at 7). I go to bed the same time, have the same night routine (etc).

If I control for these things (minus the kids waking me up) then I sleep all night just fine

I had a sleep test years ago, when I was waking up every two hours on the dot. Doctor suggested a change in my eating habits, and a mild sleep aid, and that fixed it. I rarely need a sleep aid now.
I used to always say I slept like a tweaker because for years I would constantly wake up, couldn’t fall back asleep, had trouble going to sleep, snored, etc.
Today I’m 72 days alcohol free and I haven’t slept this good in my entire life. I fall asleep around 11pm and wake up when the sun comes up.

Yes. Do you have blackout blinds and earplugs? If not you should try those. Random noises and lights wake a lot of people up and prevent good, deep sleep.

Technically speaking no because you wake up for a few seconds multiple times a night as you go through your sleep cycles but these brief awakenings aren’t long enough for your brain to encode the memory before you’re unconscious again.

While a lot of people are suggesting a sleep study for apnea or anxiety, a sleep study is good for diagnosing other issues as well.
I have insomnia. No amount of reading, warm drinks, no screens, anxiety meds, exercise, etc were able to put me out. Medication for insomnia was able to help me sleep a solid night. Definitely see a specialist.
When I was in my 20s, I could sleep all night long without getting up. Now in my 60s, usually get up 2 to 5 times during the night.

I have ADHD and have struggled with falling/staying asleep since I was a child. My sister is the same way, we’re also both night owls. Through some research I’ve found this is very common among people with ADHD.
Also, as someone stated above, evolutionary changes take a long time so we haven’t really evolved physically over the last ~2000 years especially in comparison to how drastically our environments and societal norms have evolved in that period of time. Hyper vigilance at night was how humans kept their people/tribes alive and while our environments have evolved rapidly (less need for hyper vigilance against nighttime dangers, artificial light, etc.) our bodies/brains take longer to adjust and evolve to these shifts.
Contrary to what many say, it’s actually normal to wake up a few times but quickly fall back asleep. We go through a few stages of sleep but most of us don’t recall our “waking” moments because we just quickly fall back asleep.
The way you asked suggests that you have underlying issue that you can recall your awakenings every few minutes or less than an hour. Normal short awakenings would be 2 to 3 times through the whole sleep process and should not be recalled.
Stress and anxiety will definitely likely make you hyperviligent and keep you awake instead of relaxing yourself back into sleep. Apnea also can awake you even if you don’t feel out of breath.

More or less, some times I wake up just to readjust my position, but usually I sleep like I’m dead, eyes close, eyes open and it’s the next day. I’m in the same position and no memory of a dream.
I think a sleep cycle lasts around 4 hours or so I usually wake up after a sleep cycle and go back to sleep
