Why is it called “unrealistic body standards” instead of “uncommon body standards”?

r/

Nearly every time I hear this brought up, it’s typically aimed at social media influencers with cartoonishly busty figures (large breasts, tiny waist, large hips/butt) or extremely fit/petite figures (perky breasts, tiny waist/hips, perky butt).

I understand many of them have had plastic surgery, but there are girls and women who naturally have those figures thanks to genetics.

Given that, even the term “unobtainable body/beauty standards” feels flawed, since some women, again through lucky genetics, either naturally have or can easily achieve these body types.

I can see calling them “uncommon body standards,” but “unobtainable” and “unrealistic” doesn’t seem to fit what’s usually being referred to.

So why aren’t these figures or body standards simply labeled as “uncommon”?

No, hon. No one has photoshop in their DNA test.

These bodies are fake every step of the way, don’t go around thinking that people can really look like that. I’d suggest you take a photo editing class focused on social media to see everything that can be done these days.

Because most people can’t achieve it. You are technically right, but it’s far more rare then uncommon.

I liken it to a lottery winner giving me financial advice. Lottery winners are definitely uncommon, but if you base your whole life strategy on winning the lottery, you are in a world of hurt.

A lot of people cope by saying its unrealistic when in reality tons of people have that body its just uncommon. That doesn’t apply to photoshop or touch ups obviously but genetically there is a lot of people who are anomalies and very gifted realistically the top 5% is quite rare as a percent. but given the fact there is billions of people on the planet and usually people who are in really great shape get more famous due to their looks it skews it to make it seem its a bit more common than it actually is.

It’s not the body that is unrealistic but it being a standard is. Just because Usain Bolt can sprint 100m under 10s it’s still an unrealistic standard for the general population. Unrealistic body standards are unrealistic because they can’t be achieved by most people. It means they are the exception and shouldn’t be treated as the norm.

Unrealistic body standards doesn’t mean that it’s impossible for anyone to naturally look like that, it means that it’s unrealistic for 99% of people to hold themselves to those standards because most of the time it isn’t natural.

If everyone agreed that it was uncommon then it wouldn’t be a standard honey

It’s because every single photo on beauty magazines is doctored. Every. Single. One. If it were a realistic standard, then we wouldn’t use tech to make everything look “better”

the “unrealistic” in the phrase isn’t referring to the body itself, but the standard.

having a body like that isn’t unrealistic. expecting a body like that is unrealistic.

Noone has photoshop naturally. Sure, there are men and women who are naturally close to what would be considered “unrealistic body standards”, but you can’t get rid of your pores without makeup or editing.
