What adage or piece of advice commonly given b/c it’s accepted as true is actually not true at all?

I’ll go first.

  1. People always lsay you never ever make friends, especially good friends, after a certain age (usually grade school, HS, college ).

That is total and utter bullshit. You make friends throughout your life.

Haven’t met anyone since high school I would consider a friend. High school was 20 years ago.

1] “To not care about what others say”. This mentality always, and I mean ALWAYS, ends up in social isolation.

2] “You need to be confident”. By definition, you don’t get confidence out of nothing; you don’t find it in pockets. Rather, you build something that makes you proud of yourself.

3] The usual “Divorce” typical of r/AITA Redditors, which don’t know mediation.

4] “School is the only way to success in your life” and “You don’t need school”. Again, Redditors don’t know what a middle ground is.

5] “Do skincare to look better” Skincare is bullshit aside from basic cleanser.

6] “Be yourself” is partially true, but not totally. Just don’t do whatever you want to do, try to show personal character while also complying to general social rules

7] “Focus on yourself and grind” Doomer Andrew Tate mentality. You’re gonna end up at 30 with no hobbies, no friends, no love and maybe 50k in the bank. Enjoy life
