DAE not listen to music?

r/

I just don’t go out of my way to listen to it. I don’t have a playlist. Don’t have Spotify or apple music. When someone asks me who I listen to I used to tell them I don’t listen to anyone but people acted like I confessed to a crime when I said that for some reason so I lie now and say Pink Floyd because it seems like a safe choice. Sadly I almost got caught twice because the other person actually listened to them too and started asking questions about my favorite song and everything so I looked like a major poser.

Some people just don’t. I was overly musical and most people in my family are music heads so I used to think it was weird, but in hindsight living without noise and other peoples trauma and longing through repetitive play makes sense too

Always wonder how much depression and misery we inherit through media. Not just music and movies but also all the books I read as a kid, that becomes your inner voice and you can wind up as a teenage depressed middle aged person

My father in law told me he doesnt listen to music but it’s mostly because he’s nearly deaf…

I was literally just thinking about this. I’ve been depressed for the past year (something happened ) and I have had little desire to listen to music. Sometimes I’ll get in the mood to hear a certain song and I’ll just listen to it on YouTube but that’s about it for at least a solid year.

I actually love music, singing, etc. But I don’t often just listen to it. Even driving I prefer to just enjoy the quiet. I most enjoy music when I’m home alone/in a situation where I can sing loudly. But I don’t play it as much as I used to.

  5. Tasty-Bee8769 Avatar

I get stressed with music. I listen sometimes if my emotions allow me but if it’s without headphones and other people listening like whilst doing something at home, I get stressed

  6. BojaktheDJ Avatar

I couldn’t imagine a day without music. If I leave my house and realise I forgot my Airpods, you bet I’m turning back, no matter how far I am. One time I was over an hour away from home so I just bought a new pair of Airpods then and there.

Were you always like this or did you previously enjoy music??

  7. Papadump88 Avatar

I only do when friends turn something on. Have had people call me a sociopath when I’ve said I don’t listen/don’t have a taste

  8. No-Association2617 Avatar

Nah,.. no music, not even in the car. My job is so loud that I need the silence when I get out.

  9. yolofreak109 Avatar

one of my coworkers doesn’t listen to music. it kinda scares me because she’ll ride in the car with no music playing unless i play something. meanwhile if i don’t listen to music at all waking hours im at least listening to music in my head. two complete opposites!

  10. BlueStarrSilver Avatar

I’m like this. I have a playlist that is mostly for treadmill running. I listen to the radio in the car and like to hear it as background when I’m out to eat or shopping, but otherwise prefer quiet. I like songs not bands, so I really have no idea who sings what.

  11. Dallas_Cowboys50 Avatar

I like silence while driving. When it comes to listening to music at home, I have a night every few months where I get drunk and listen all night, usually for like 4 or 5 hours. Thats it, my thing is watching YouTube vids, way too much.

  12. Jade_FTW85 Avatar

I constantly listen to music almost all day. I cannot relate.

  13. Chocolatelover4ever Avatar

Yup. I don’t listen to any music. Shower, car, anything, It’s complete silence. I don’t have a playlist, care about any singers or bands, or know any popular songs. I don’t own anything music related. I just don’t care about it.

And yeah people look at me like I’m a zombie. And I have even Seen a couple people say that people who don’t enjoy music are literal psychopaths and need to be avoided because they’re dangerous.

  14. Silver_Confection869 Avatar

My 16 year old is like this. My brain can’t comprehend it. But hey. I. Not knocking silence either.

  15. purplishfluffyclouds Avatar

I don’t. I LOVE music. I STUDIED music. I pay too much attention to it because of the fact that I studied it. When there is music on, I literally cannot focus on anything else. So, I just keep it silent until I have the time/space to intentionally listen to it.

  16. DownVegasBlvd Avatar

It honestly depends on the way I’m feeling. I’m a huge, massive, crazy ass music fan and I could safely say it’s almost my life…but sometimes I’ll go stretches of days without wanting to listen at all. I don’t think it’s necessarily unnatural, just part of being a multifaceted human.

  17. KokirisEmerald Avatar

Just… no. I listen to music all the time. It’s one of my very first hobbies I discovered when I was a little kid. My love for music has only grown since then. Btw my “dream job” when I was younger was to be a DJ. That did not happen. 🤷🏼‍♂️😁

  18. hollowbolding Avatar

ok well first of all pink floyd guys in the wild love to make you feel like a major poser just for fun ( i say this as a division bell enjoyer)

second no but i think i understand the feeling, i listen to music but i don’t go out of my way to watch tv for the sake of watching tv and it feels very similar

  19. Pristine-Pen-9885 Avatar

You didn’t have to do that. The outcome was predictable, and for no good purpose.

  20. ali693 Avatar

I couldn’t do this life without it

  21. plantmama918 Avatar

My sister is like this. It puzzles me, but I don’t judge.

  22. piss-jugman Avatar

Can’t imagine it. I just listened to a new album all the way through and immediately listened through again. I’m listening when I work, drive or do almost anything that doesn’t involve talking to people. I constantly have an ongoing playlist of whatever I’m listening to throughout the year. I start a new one when my vibe or overarching mood changes. Live music gives me life.

It’s kind of fascinating and entirely foreign to try to imagine not caring about it

  23. motion_pictures Avatar

I find this so odd because I’m not just constantly listening to music, but I have music or parts of songs stuck in my head 24/7. I’m always unintentionally whistling too lol

  24. SnooJokes7110 Avatar

I absolutely can’t stand silent car rides lol

  25. ilovethatyouloveme Avatar

for me music pulls out emotions and feelings and memories I don’t want to feel or remember. It plays with my emotions. I only listen to it when I dance. I prefer silence or podcasts. It’s weird because for the majority of my life , I loved music to the point of insanity, but then my brother killed himself and I just stopped listening.

  26. mllrglr Avatar

I am more of a podcast/audiobook person, but only if the tasks I am doing are physical (laundry, driving, etc). If the tasks are cognitive then I prefer silence.

  27. awkwardlylife-ing Avatar

I don’t care for music the same way others do it was SUPER important to me when I was growing up but now it just becomes noise even music I like I had songs I’d listen to when I was in physical therapy and I even got bored with them and I don’t like repetitive lyrics, but the odd thing is that I do love live music and I really like going to free shows for bands I don’t even know(but I don’t tend to listen to them a bunch after)so you’re not alone in the strangeness. I prefer TV as background noise!

  28. Massive_Composer_760 Avatar

My brother doesn’t really listen to music either. I personally find it wild as I love music but I know there are some out there who do t care much for it. My brother is autistic though, he’s far more into video games than music.

Music is my first and main passion. It gives me joy and life. I have a physical reaction to hearing music I like. Every hair on my body stands on end. I love the sound of the human voice – I went to an opera recently and tears were streaming down my face the whole time.

The only thing I love more than listening to music is playing it.

I very rarely listen to music (that I didn’t write). Maybe once or twice a month. I hardly ever go to shows (that I’m not playing in). I have been to the opera twice, both were profound experiences. Aside from my recent outing, the last time I went was 7 years ago.

Yeah, I don’t understand it either. I make no sense.

  30. Impossible_Policy_12 Avatar

I don’t really listen to music anymore, particularly in vogue stuff. I’m soooo bored of songs just being about love and having the same 8 bar intro, verse, chorus, etc. It’s all just the same shite repackaged. Long form music like opera or symphonies are amazing but you have to have time and mindset. Otherwise it’s blissful silence.

It’s more common than you think! Roughly 3-5% of people have a neurodivergence called ‘musical anhedonia’, causing an inability to derive pleasure from music. My son is the same. Me, his father, his sister, we all love music. He gets nothing out of it at all. It’s just noise.

A question that has just occurred to me- those of you who experience this, do you derive pleasure from other sounds?

Birdsong? The cheerful babbling of a stream? The turning of pages in a book? The ocean?

  32. The_Mushroom_Wh0 Avatar

My mom doesn’t listen to music. She does, however, hear music (usually my favorite songs) and then butchers it and forces me to listen.

  33. nemesissi Avatar

I have Spotify, but use it only for podcasts. I listen to podcasts every time I leave the house. I only listen to music (from mp3’s, that I have collected, oldest files dating back to 1998) when I’m working out at the gym. And maybe once or twice a year the when the house is empty and I’m cooking (food).

  34. FindingAWayThrough Avatar

I used to listen to music a lot, but then it became part of my career and I just got tired of it. I barely listen to it anymore, usually only if I’m with my partner/in his car. It used to make me feel good or as though I was engaging in something meaningful, but now unfortunately, it just doesn’t. Even going down and participating in my church choir or as a cantor at mass doesn’t really make me feel engaged or fulfilled in any real way.

Disclaimer: I do deal with major depressive disorder, so that’s part of it, but not all of it.
    🤷‍♀️

I’m addicted to frisson. You don’t listen to music? I don’t trust like that.

  36. overlord_of_cringe Avatar

I think you don’t have to lie about this. Yeah, you don’t listen to music. What are they gonna do, sue you? Kill you in self-defence? I don’t think so.

  37. Jabber_Tracking Avatar

I can go weeks without listening to music If the noise in my head is loud enough.

  38. AytumnRain Avatar

I listen to music but I don’t watch movies or shows very much. People will talk ablit famlus actresses and actors and I don’t know them. At first they think I’m not serious. They continue talking about them and I’m sitting here with a confused look on my face. I’m like this with pop music too.

  39. bdexteh Avatar

Depends. Ironic enough is the fact that I’m a musician myself, a guitarist, and no longer listen to it as often as I used to. I used to LIVE with my headphones in, listening to whatever had my attention at the time. But as I got older, I started just driving in total silence. I don’t know why.

Now I listen and play music more again, but occasionally I’ll just sit in silence instead.
