Why do countries often look down on others?

r/

I’ve been thinking lately about how often people, communities, and even whole nations look down on others. It seems to happen everywhere—whether it’s some Western countries looking down on the Middle East, or within the West itself where some might look down on Eastern Europe. Even in Asia, you sometimes see this dynamic—like how some in Korea might look down on Filipinos or Southeast Asians in general.

Like for example if you colonized a country before, shouldn’t you firstly be ashamed instead of looking down on them?

Genuine discussion.

Some people need to feel ‘above the masses’, and they achieve this by stomping others into the ground.

Some people have good enough reasons because of wars etc, most are just being dicks though.

“some might look down on Eastern Europe.” Not ‘some’. I think it’s because of the Eastern European migrants. It’s never the wealthy who has good education and has teir life together that moves to another country to become service personnel. Basically, they ruined it for themselves. Also, the iron curtain didn’t help either.

Humans brains are hard wired to recognize patterns and categorize information. This has at least so far always devolved into “us” and “them”

I heard someone say there’s no such thing as a bad country.  Only bad leadership.  The argument was all country’s have the potential for being great. Corruption and greed and power from bad leaders is what basically gives them the label as “bad”. I can’t remember where I heard this but it made a lot of sense. So basically any country can turn into a bad country.
