What are your thoughts on kitchens with no Windows?

r/

My parter and I found a gorgeous 3 bed flat that we’re planning to view today. The layout is clean, the bedrooms are specious, the area is beautiful and very desirable for many. The size and price of the flat means it will be a forever home or at least 10+ year investment for us.

The only issue is the kitchen, it’s a good size 3.5×2.9 but has no window.

What are your thoughts of kitchens with no windows, anything I should consider? Will the flat still be sellable in the future?

hmmm depressing honestly you do spend lot of time standing up in a kitchen not sure i would want to be somewhere with articial light for this length of time.

if it was the only option I had similiar I would do it though

    I wouldn’t go for this.

I rented a flat that had a kitchen with no windows. It was just a room to prepare food in and it never occurred to me that it could be considered an issue. If you see using the kitchen as a sitting room as well it might annoy you.

Kitchens and bathrooms need windows. It’s an essential for me unfortunately.

Mine has no window, never thought twice about it. Makes the place seem cleaner actually, natural light is terrible for kitchen crumbs. 🫣

No windows wouldn’t stop me – but I’d be expecting some serious extraction above the hob!

It’d be a definite no for me.

You will need a good extraction fan.

Mine has flag windows so cannot open them and I’m fine with that – only because they’re connected with the back door.

Don’t have windows, get really good lighting ! My husband uses it as an excuse to wash up badly 🤣🤣

No window is a concern. Although if the kitchen itself is really small and is attached to an open plan lounging / dining space then this might work out. I think you should put a picture with this post if possible for a better idea / engaging views.

Is it a kitchen area in an open plan room, and there are windows on the other side of the room? Fine.

A separate room with no windows? No.

I think it depends on what you’re using it for and the stage of life you’re at.

When I was young and single, kitchen was only for preparing food so it didn’t really matter.

Now I’m older with a family, we host, you do a lot of prep in the kitchen whilst chatting, drinking wine etc. it’s more of a community space.

If you’re intending to stay there a while and will have/have a family and will do any sort of socialising where people come to your home to eat – I bet it would fell claustrophobic and get annoying pretty quickly.

It’s down to you, but lets be honest in 2025 a fancy kitchen is the equivalent of a sports car in the 80s. If that’s not what you’re about that’s fine but it is a major selling point to many people.

Without knowing the layout (dining kitchen vs separate room down the hallway, for example) it’s difficult to say, but I can’t imagine any ‘room’ not having a window of any sort.

Isolated bathrooms are a thing that we’ve had to put up with, but one spends far more time in kitchens, and the potential to vent smoke/odours would make a dark, isolated, internal kitchen seem a bizarre bodge to me.

My kitchen technically has no window. It’s in the same space as my living room, but is behind a dividing wall. So the window is in the living room part. Hasn’t caused me any issues.

I had it once before living in temporary accommodation and it was a bit annoying as it was tiny and the smells lingered but that was for 5 months. If I was buying somewhere permanent like OP seems to be, I’d be wanting a window.

You’ve got doubts as you’re considering buying it, so when you come to sell it others will have doubts.

Flats are not very good buys at the moment prices are dropping and I don’t think they have bottomed out yet

Acceptable in a commercial location, unacceptable in a domestic one

Been living in my flat for two years and it has an open plan kitchen/ living room area with a big window. The reason I mention this is that I specifically chose it over the flat upstairs because that had no window in the kitchen. Since I’ve lived there, I’ve had to go up twice and help my neighbour because they couldn’t clear out smoke when they burnt something.

Lived with one for 15 years, didn’t bother me personally.

My dream kitchen has a window behind the sink and ideally doors out to a beautiful garden so if my budget was in dream house territory I wouldn’t go for it. If you’re not in dream house territory then it’s a compromise you might or might not want to make in the context of what else you’re getting for your money, a bit like having crappy old storage heaters or no off street parking. I’d just want to make sure the extraction is good and I had access to wherever it extracts to in case of any problems.

Edit: if you’re planning on being there long term you could also think about changing the layout of the flat.

I’m actually in the middle of a renovation which will make my kitchen an interior room. It’s all about good lighting and extraction. I’d rather have the dining and living space at the back with the natural light. I can plan the lighting to make the kitchen function well.

Not unheard of for a flat. It was probably rejigged to get another bedroom or bathroom in at some point in its life.

My old flat had a kitchen with a window and extractor fan and it still made the whole flat smell so I’d be extra wary without a window.
