I think that yes, people listen to things, but I also think a big part of it is just a signal to others that “I don’t want to talk” — Many people are fairly introverted and would rather not be social with strangers and that has only increased in recent years.
Easier for just turn on or off the music . Also when someone calls , just tap on the side to answers or if you have it announce your call you just say yes. It connects the call. Some people prefer using them instead of holding their phone .
I’m not young, but once I put them in I don’t take them out because they are so small I worry about losing them.
They are also useful in windy conditions if you don’t want air in your ears.
Sometimes it’s nice to muffle sound if you have anxiety/ptsd/autism too, especially if you are in a very loud environment e g. Big canteen. There are specialist ear device mufflers which are designed to do only that but I have never tried them.
(39F) I am suuuuuper sensitive to sound and the noise canceling helps me so much. Esp at work so I can concentrate in a sea of noise. It’s also a good way to get weirdos not to talk to you in public.
In order to sleep I need a loud white noise machine and heavy duty ear plugs or any little noise will wake me up. Part of it stems from severe ptsd and growing up in a home where my dad was very verbally abusive every day.
I have sound sensory issues, therefore the noice cancelling in the AirPods help silence unnecessary sounds. Yet, still making sounds like voices and whatnot still audible.
Plus, I enjoy music. So I’m listening to music at a low volume for the majority of the day
I wear mine a lot for podcasts and I just leave them in. I tap to switch to Aware mode so I can hear things and talk to people but don’t always take them out
I’m older (boomer vintage), and don’t wear them much inside, but when I take my daily walk, I’m usually listening to music or a book, and I have them in, so one might get the impression that I always wear them.
In my case, I use Apple AirPods specifically, because I write and produce music, and I want to hear how the music will sound when played through popular products.
I am in my mid 30s. I wear at least one earphone most of the time at work. I manage a warehouse and get my phone calls thru my phone. Now as far as being in public I normally only wear them if I’m doing yard work / gym and need to run someplace and don’t feel like taking them out. But I wear open ear ones so I can hear.
Are you asking about airpods specifically? Or earbuds in general?
I prefer raycons. I find them really comfortable.
But I do leave them in pretty much all day on days I go into the office. It’s to tune out the office noise and chatter so I can focus on my job. I prefer podcasts most of the time. I like scary stories. Or sometimes lofi is nice.
They’re Apple users; it’s because they like paying $$$$ more for their electronics than everyone else and getting nothing for it but trendy e-waste; because none of their stuff works with anything outside of the current generation of Apple products.
Just ask anyone who owns an iPod dock, or a lightning accessory, or firewire, or headphones with a cord, or a physical DVD/CD, or a magsafe charger, or a USB-A device, or a printer more than 5 years old.
Anyway, personally I have zero interest in earpods because they have shitty bass response and constantly feel like they’re going to fall out and get lost if I turn my head too quickly.
I find it crazy people walk around with both in. It’s taking away one of your most valuable senses.
I have one in for a good part of my work day so I can listen to music and take calls easily. But never two in public, awareness is important and being able to engage with people is also nice.

People just really listen to music 24/7. And it’s easier to just disconnect the Airpods than taking them out I guess.
I think so they don’t have to hear or talk to anyone.

Those things look so stupid in the ears constantly. Never know if somebody is on the phone or not.
Tale them.out, give the ears a break, and some silence
I think you may see older people doing it more soon as more people start using them as hearing aids.
Maybe because the world beyond the AirPods sucks.
To block out the majority of older people
Personally I use U8i sport headphones. However there aren’t many being made anymore so whenever mine break I get sad.
I’m not young, but once I put them in I don’t take them out because they are so small I worry about losing them.
They are also useful in windy conditions if you don’t want air in your ears.

Personally, there are very few things I love more than music, and so I wear AirPods so I can listen to it whenever.
They are terrified that they might have to engage with other humans.
Because i hate loud enviroments an need ANC. Also i dont want to talk to people.
I actually just use mine for the noise cancelling most of the time. Sometimes public spaces are so unnecessarily loud it overstimulates me
My older boss is multitasking while wearing air pods. When she’s wearing them, she’s in a meeting or on a call. It’s annoying.

Because they like the look of male reproduction fluid dripping from their ear.
I like to think out loud sometimes when I go for walks and I don’t want people thinking I’m crazy, so I keep them in to reassure peeps

How many will develop hearing problems or tinnitus because of this habit?
I’m not young but always have one in to answer work calls hands free. And/ or I’m listening to podcasts. It’s pretty amazing technology imo.
Tired of hearing all the bullshit.
I have sound sensory issues, therefore the noice cancelling in the AirPods help silence unnecessary sounds. Yet, still making sounds like voices and whatnot still audible.

I just found out that my 17 year old who wears airpods listens to late 70s, early 80s rock music like Motley Crüe.
If I could have worn AirPods all day every day in high school I would have, but they didn’t exist yet.
It gives you an excuse to not talk, and keeps people from talking to you.
For some people, making noises with our faces is not an enjoyable pastime.
But for some of you, making noises with your face is the center of the world, the most beautiful sound, who would not want to do that endlessly?
(Human speech is truly no less annoying than dogs barking, to those of us who aren’t obsessed with talking.)
I don’t have a car. I see this everywhere. This is a boss move.
Social autism
I (20M) use hearing aids that look kinda like headphones
Emotional support AirPods
Same reason why people wore obnoxious Bluetooth ear pieces for the last decade.

I personally don’t get it. Aren’t they like over 100 bucks? I can get a pair of wireless earbuds for 25 bucks that work just fine.
For the same reason, people in the 80s were headphones everywhere
Because the world is insane and sometimes music is the only thing that can bring it into focus.
I am 70yo. I have a JBL earpod in one ear all day. I switch it out when the battery runs low for the other pod.
Why? Reddit videos, YT videos, podcasts etc.
Just tap pause when someone speaks to me.
I’m sensitive to sounds and it helps dull sharp noises.
to constantly listen to things, pretty simple lol
They haven’t experienced the joys of having tinnitus yet. Once you do you regret all the years of blasting music into your ear drums.

For a safety measure I always have earbuds on one side only, I feel I cannot be completely out there not knowing what is going on around me.
It’s hardly a majority. But they sound fantastic.
Because they are all dick heads
