How was cancer treated before chemotherapy and radiation existed? Were all cancers an automatic death sentence, did they try and perform surgery to remove them?

Even curable forms of cancer like Hodgkins (the kind I had) seemed to be automatic death sentences back then.

Grover Cleveland had a tumor removed from his mouth in 1893 while he was president. He lived another 15 years. It was also kept secret for 25 years.

Surgery when possible, but mostly you took pain killers until you died.

My great-great-great grandfather hand cancer in his face. He stayed home from church one Sunday and hanged himself in the barn. At the age of 103.

My ancestors were tough old birds.

As an aside, its interesting to note that cancer is way more common than it used to be, because people are much more likely to live long enough to develop cancer.
