[Star Wars] Does a planet’s Senator HAVE to be of the planet’s native species?

r/

I get that you’d need to be FROM the planet to serve as its Senator, but we have instances from colony worlds that have no native sapient species like Wayyl or Ghorman that has (or had) a Human Senator, despite there being plenty of other species on the planet.

But let’s say I’m from Ryloth. I was born there, raised there, never been anywhere else in the Galaxy, and I’m interested in going into politics because Orn Free Taa’s been screwing things up way too much. The thing is, I’m not a Twi’Lek. It might hurt my chances with the other locals, but would it disqualify me from running for Senator?

Well, Naboo’s natives were Gungan, but had human royalty and senators.

Could a Human citizen of Ryloth legally represent it? Absolutely, the Republic Constitution is species-blind. Is it politically viable? Absolutely not, Humans are already the dominant Galactic species, the Twi’leks aren’t going to have one represent them. If there’s isn’t a major Human planet in the sector, it’s just not happening.

Depends on the planet. Each planet/body elects their own Galactic Senators and each one decides for themself what the criteria are for those senators (within certain very general guidelines like no Sith, no droids, etc.)

No, Senators Palpatine and Amidala are perfect examples of this — both are humans living Naboo, which native population is made of Gungans. Some Senators (including Palpatine and Amidala) represented whole Sectors, not just their homeworlds. And of course, some represented regions of several planets under control of one specific group, like the Trade Federation.

It would certainly be a challenge, as a non-native species, to run for public office, but it would not be impossible.
