I learned driving at 38. AMA

r/

I’ve never driven a car before I moved to the US. It was pretty embarrassing to be taking the driving class at that age. I’ve been driving for more than 2 years now.

Was it hard to learn as an adult? How long did it take to get your license?

Where’s the next place you’re going?

My husband doesn’t yet have his license at 34, he had trauma associated with an accident he was in when he was a kid. He has been seriously talking about changing that soon. What advice would you give to a later in life driver that someone who learned as a teen (myself) might take for granted?

I’m your age and I don’t think I’ll ever drive because I live in a city with good public transport links. My anxiety is too high to drive!

Do you think because of your age you’re a safer driver than teenagers are? I know young people can be reckless because they feel immortal.

If you didn’t have to drive and could take the bus, would you still bother? Was it a necessity where you were living?

I learned to drive in my 30s too! (In New Zealand, not the US though). Since then, I’ve driven all around my own country, and also in the US – that was wild, diving on the other side of the road!

No question for you really, just a shared experience. 🙂

Have you thanked your friends and family for having to drive you everywhere for the last 20 years?

I’m 35 and have only started my driving lessons this week. I came back from practicing with my husband and the kids at the back. I drove a lot worse than I did with my instructor and I’m now doubting my ability to learn to drive. Like I couldn’t “glance” at side mirrors, I just focused on them too much and my left turn was too wide today according to my husband. I got beeped at once too because it took me a bit to make a turn. I’d really appreciate some encouragement.
