The play it was based on was written before the US entered WWII, and because of that, it’s very much about not being neutral. Many of the actors are actual European refugees who fled the Nazis. It was released in the winter of 1942/43, before D-Day, when the outcome of the war was far from certain. It’s a love story that has a happy ending despite the guy not getting the girl. It’s famously quotable. It’s very pretty to look at, and it’s the movie that made me realize old black-and-white movies could be good.
And my favorite scene is when the whole nightclub drowns out the Nazis singing Die Wacht am Rhein with La Marseillaise.
It’s hard to explain. This film is kinda like Zombieland, but a bit less goofy and more wholesome. I grew up on 80’s action movies. When SHTF movies were popular it was easy to get into those. But this is different. Tale of the underdog doing something amazing. I also like some fantasy. The CGI monsters are blended pretty well with the live action.
Also, the ideas of perseverance, preparedness, and personal growth arc of the adventure in sometimes comedic ways. Most of the film is his encounters along the trip. The double twist ending is icing on the cake.

The secret life of Walter Mitty. It gives me hope for some reason.
Ran by Akita Kurosawa because i admire his work and it’s his interpretation of Billy Shakespeare’s King Lear. Best of both worlds.
