I took my wife out for a motorcycle ride to lunch. We ended up somewhere I wish we hadn’t.

r/

It was a perfect weekend so naturally my wife and I did a bit of riding. We like riding two up and finding bbq joints and little pubs
along the way.

I don’t typically go to the hole in the wall way out places and today was no exception. I am black, my wife is white. I chose a pub and grill that wasn’t too far from home and wasn’t too out in the “backwoods.”

The bartender and server were super nice. The few people there didn’t bother us. The food was ok. When I went to the bathroom before I left I saw the writing on the walls. Literally. Swastikas everywhere, the N word with hard R on the walls. These were not new etches in the wall. Keeping these things up on the walls is saying something. I hated that I gave that place my money.

I didn’t tell my wife when we were leaving. The couple getting out of their truck as we were gearing up outside wouldn’t acknowledge me at all. I don’t know what prompted me to wave and smile at them, but their coldness made me feel even dumber.

I wish I never went there. I snapped a quick photo above the urinal but I don’t know how to post it here.

I’m so sorry you experienced this behavior. I wish the day would finally arrive where small-minded thinking and racism no longer exist.

  2. Creighcray Avatar

Sorry you experienced that bro. As a person of Mexican descent and being brown, I know what it’s like. Different slurs but similar feelings. People suck sometimes.

  3. Vaginafister-69 Avatar

Tell us the name of the place and we will yelp the shit out of it.

  4. Prestigious_Tip_19 Avatar

No room for that kind of ignorance to continue existing in this world. Kudos to you for choosing to continue choosing kindness and light in the face of that kind of hatred.

  5. DeannaC-FL Avatar

That just sucks. No place for that today – or ever – but especially today when everyone knows better.

I’m sorry that is still happening.

I’m ashamed for all the white people who feel that is necessary or in any way acceptable.

Fuck whoever wrote it and whoever let it stay up.

Don’t even know how else to support you on this on a Reddit. Open to ideas.

    Just sucks.

If it makes you feel any better, my wife was looking for some motorcycle riding areas around the Ozarks and ended up with a brochure for Harrison, Arkansas. I am whiter than an unsalted saltine and that racist hellhole was a hard no from me.

    Name and shame!

Wait a few days and write some reviews on various platforms with pictures

There’s a reason they’re called conservatives. They’re conserving an obsolete lifestyle of racism, misogyny, white power, god is good but only to us because our special sect of religion is more important than the rest of the world.

Those are the type of people that frequent that bar.

Sorry you went through that, I can only imagine what it’s like. My best friend is black and It’s disheartening to see the few times he’s fought segregation and racism right in front of me, and how NORMAL it is to him, it’s fucking sickening.

It shouldn’t be glanced over anymore, what was the name of the place, if you don’t mind me asking?

They were dormant for so long, now they’re coming out in full force.

I once had a similar experience, except my name was carved into the wall.

I just took a few photos and posted it. I didn’t say anything against the bar, just that it was weird and gross.

The place (full of nice people who I’m sure did not bother to read the walls (there was a separate employee restroom), replaced the walls and stall door shortly after. I haven’t seen graffiti in their RR since, and it’s been more than a decade

I live on Vancouver Island and have never seen this kind of overt racism in my life, and I’m over 60. Intellectually, I know it’s real but it seems like some kind of twisted dystopian fantasy. I’m so sad you experienced this and that it is a real thing in the world.

I’m sorry. My dad always told me if you don’t speak up you’re just as guilty as the person doing wrong. I feel like it’s on white people to be loud about racism when they see it ( not your wife obviously, in that type of place you just want to gtfo and quick).

  15. TJJ97 Avatar

Man, that’s unfortunate. My wife is black and we’ve never had issues even way out in the country. Come out to Missouri (excluding the boot heel), even very rural places can get down with a little culture

If you have a local subreddit (or Facebook page or whatever), just post the picture with the name of the restaurant from a burner account.

I just want you to know that this kind of stuff goes in porta potties all the time.. Doesn’t make it right but that’s how things are. I am not excusing them, but they could fix it and it could keep happening.

  19. DtownBronx Avatar

Don’t feel dumb, smile and wave harder. That’s what I do.

  20. Fantastic-Emu-1073 Avatar

Look up the poem “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Laurence Dunbar. It may explain as to why you waved

  21. dandelionmoon12345 Avatar

Fuck that place. I’m so sorry.

  22. pat6681 Avatar

I’m a white guy from Minnesota, I can’t imagine how that made you feel. I’m sorry.

  23. UnhappyJohnCandy Avatar

I’m sorry you experienced that. I’d rather have a beer with you than a bunch of racists any day.

  24. Agitated_Ad_1658 Avatar

Let me guess you rode out by Lake Livingston 😳😳😂😂😂😂

“It’s because I’m bigger than your husband.  That’s why.   That’s why you’re being breeded out.  And there’s nothing you can do about it except to go extinct.”

    “Excuse me?!?”

    Smile and wave.

Might as well ruin their day back.

  26. internetSurfer0 Avatar

Don’t give these people the satisfaction of feeling bad my friend. Keep the chin up high and proud, you seem to be a good person and the only opinions that should matter are those are important to you, the rest of the racist people, don’t even acknowledge them, not worth the effort.

I know it’s easier said than done, but the more you think about these kind of people the more it takes from you and what matters, you spending time and making memories with you dear ones.

  27. jessieGarcia100 Avatar

Damn this a sad one, so sorry you had to go through that. You don’t deserve that.

  28. Federal-Research-148 Avatar

Name & shame the place bro

  29. Wyshunu Avatar

Sadly that coldness goes all ways. Can’t count the times I’ve smiled and said hello.to people not of my race and received only a cold stare, or being completely ignored, in return.

Sorry you had to deal with that.

  30. Meltedwhisky Avatar

Take those pics, wait a few days, then post on Google and Yelp. I don’t want to go there, if you don’t want to be there.

  31. AdoreDaMuffin Avatar

There’s a green book app. Can you mark that place as a no-go?

  32. Ill_Possibility_4069 Avatar

OP, I’m white but my BIL is black and I was so dismayed and embarrassed to learn how places I was going to for years made him feel unwelcome. (I no longer go to those places). I am heartily sorry for your experience.

  35. EmeraldTwilight009 Avatar

Dude…those places and people exist. They aren’t going anywhere. Just get over it and move on

  36. Venatrix12 Avatar

Im so white im nearly translucent but F those people.
If you and your wife ever end up riding in western north carolina I can give you loads of places that would be happy to have your business. I don’t ride anymore but my dad does and he would be more than happy to ride with you anywhere between Tennessee and Florida.

I am sorry you dealt with that and deal with issues like that on the regular. If you want to put the name of the place in a private chat I would be happy to write a review like I visited the place recently if you have pictures.
