This is a question for Americans.
I consider myself a white caucasian since I’m white from Europe with all my family from European origins.
Edit 1: I don’t like/eat Tacos 🤣
And this is my accent: https://voca.ro/1mDcpsg1LxEM
Edit 2: If you want to know how white I am, send me a message and I will send a lic of me since I can attach photos here.

White.
But honestly, most people would just look at your last name and if you are olive complected at all they are going to assume non-white and that you are Mexican or South American (although yes I am aware many people there are 100% european too). Like if a doctor’s office or school office worker is filling out some sort of form they would just automatically check “hispanic” on the form under ethnicity and wouldn’t even ask you about it if they saw your last name. No one is double checking “oh are you from Spain?”.
That is why Martin Sheen changed his name from Martin Estevez to Sheen. His dad was from Spain. Martin Sheen wanted to enter hollywood and knew he would get racist assumptions from his last name that might limit his job prospects. So he changed it to his mom’s last name. Edward Furlong’s name was a spanish name too from his Mexican grandfather and his family changed it when he started acting.
Hispanic is not a racial category, so you’d be a White Hispanic, but not Latino since you’re not from Latin America.
Hispanic / not Hispanic = ethnicity
Caucasian / Latino = race
You can be white and Hispanic. Those are two different categories of descriptors.
Years ago I dated a girl from Spain-she looked Celtic but had a commonly recognized last name. She asked me, “What the hell is a taco? Why people keep asking me about taco?”
Spanish = Mexican in a lot of Americans’ perceptions.
White but at the same time you’re from a Spanish speaking country so technically Hispanic I guess?
Hillary Thomas
You can be what ever you want to be.. its a free country 😂
both. you’d mark the box for white then there’s another for hispanic or not
Fellow white Spaniard here. You are both Hispanic and white Caucasian. Hispanic just means you come from a country who language is predominantly Spanish.
How white? It’s not based on nationality. Just general vibes.
You can identify as you want.
I would consider you both. Hispanic is an ethnicity referring to someone from a culture related to the Spanish language.
You speak Spanish…you’re a Migo.
White
People from Spain are considered Hispanic but not Latino
To White Americans, you’re Latino. (Americans aren’t big on details like geography); to Latino Americans, you’re a Gabacho.
Depends on your income. If it’s under $100k then Hispanic. Over then white.
White
You can argue all you want on reddit. The minute you mention a Spanish last name or you drop an accent, you’ll be called Mexican and you’ll be asked how did you get here and if you’re legal. I got 20 years in this game
Hispanic means Spanish speaking. So you are Hispanic, but you are white.
American here. You’re just a human and you can call yourself whatever you want.
I’m white, but I sat in on a discussion about this. There’s this white girl I knew who maintained that people can be white and Hispanic (I think she was either Spanish or Argentinian). Personally? I don’t really believe in policing people’s identities. (I’m not saying you are; I just mean in general).
One of my friends is Cuban and she’s basically as white as I am, and I’m a pasty motherfucker. My Dominican friend will call her a “white-tina” and she doesn’t appreciate it.
You would be both technically
USA has a Hispanic White category. The only white ethnicity available on the paperwork actually.
I work for govt and our firms use ticker boxes that ask what race you are (black, white, Asian etc). Then there are separate boxes to mark Hispanic/not Hispanic. Interestingly Chaldean (Arab) folks are also considered white, as are many Jews.
Yes
Both
Both.
Depends on how racist the american person talking to you is. For example, Lovecraft lumped gypsies and Portuguese together.
But you’re actually Hispanic since the term refers to individuals from Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain.
white
Mexican. 😂
Caucasian
You are both white and Hispanic. They aren’t mutually exclusive.
My husband is Italian, grew up in Venezuela, speaks Italian and Spanish, then moved to the US and learned English. He looks white but as soon as he opens his mouth, people know he’s Hispanic. He actually gets, “Are you Venezuelan?” all the time.
White. Until some hick finds out you can speak Spanish. Then their heads explode.
Tom Segura had a bit on this.
White Caucasian.
In the US white, while in some parts of Europe Spaniards are treated the same as Latinos for some reason.
White but you’d get taken as Hispanic most likely
White
You’re white as fuck bro lol. You’re not hispanic or latino unless you’re from south of the border or from the Caribbean islands(PR, Cuba, The DR). You’re a white person who speaks spanish lol
White
It’s up to you, officially, but your skin color determines how others will perceive your race, unofficially.
I have a buddy in Canada who has your heritage. He insists that he’s a visible minority. We bust his balls and tell him he’s only an audible minority because of his accent.
People are going to make whatever assumptions fit their world view and you can correct them or not. If you’re pale people will assume you’re white. Depending on your name pepe may assume you’re Hispanic.
Generally for ‘legal’ purposes you meet the qualifications for Hispanic if you choose to claim it. I went to hs with a blond hair blue eyed girl who was 2nd generation Spaniard and she got a scholarship for Hispanic students. There was some fuss but she met all the qualifications. She was from a recent immigrant family, fluent in Spanish and going into an English as a second language teaching program.
Conquistador?
You’re a white Hispanic
You are Hispanic and white.
You will have a lot of people who are convinced that you cannot be Hispanic without being Latino, which is insane since those are two totally different things.
Brazilians are Latino, but not Hispanic.
Spaniards are Hispanic, but not Latinos.
I work for the government and you would be classified as a white hispanic by most governmental entities. Hispanic is an ethnicity, relating to a Spanish background or influence and includes people from Spain and is independent a person’s race. Latino,as a term, would not include Spaniards as it’s geographically focused on the Americas.
You are the definition of Hispanic.
these are usually two different questions on any type of form that would ask you this. you are white first and if the option is there you can say hispanic aswell.
“Hispanic” is an ethnicity. “White” is a race. You can be both 100% white and 100% Hispanic.
It’s really up to you, race is made up anyways.
Color doesn’t really matter, good example is Mexico, there are a lot of people from Mexico that are of white complexion. My wife’s whole family immigrated here and are white.
Hispanic.
“White Caucasian” isn’t a thing. It’s just one of the two. Caucasian isn’t even an accurate term to begin with, so it’s really just “white”.
Being an american of mixed ethnicity I’ve always hated forms that make you choose one (half white and japanese). My kids are screwed being that they are also a quarter mexican lol
White
My Palestinian friend describes himself as an “aural-minority”; if you just see him, he’s as white as George Clooney, but as soon as he starts talking he gets called a “person of color”.
Demographically speaking, you are a White Hispanic.
White as long as you do not have olive skin and if you have an accent you don’t open your mouth.
Immigrant
You are Hispanic. According to the US Census Bureau, people whose ancestors are from Spain are Hispanic. As such, you can take advantage of all the amenities offered to minorities in the US (which aren’t as much now with the new administration). The fact that you are white is irrelevant.
You are comparing 2 different categories Race & Cultural Origin/Affiliation. Hispanic ,or sometimes Latino, are used to describe persons of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, Spain, or other Spanish cultural influence. It is not related to race. People from those countries, live influenced culturally by Spain and in Hispanic lifestyles. There are people within those regions, ie. from Mexico, there are Maya, Aztec, Mixtec, and Zapotec origin, who speak their own language, have religious beliefs and traditions, that are different than Hispanic culture. Although these peoples have been influenced by the surrounding Hispanic culture, they have adhered to their culture of origin, or Indigenous. Nearly as soon as the concept of dividing people into racial categories originated in the 1700s, there were immediately problems. Actual people didn’t fit into those categories. Racial categorization, or division, is a human construct, based on the “Science” of those times. The research was influenced by the prejudices/beliefs of the times, therefore, limited, inconsistent and unreliable. You’re classified as White, because people with predominantly Euro-Spanish genetics are classified as White. Likewise, many Mexicans, Central & South Americans, are considered White, it is because their percentage of Indigenous genes is less than the Spanish and they live culturally as Hispanic. This classification has historically not been based on genetic testing, and was based on appearance: lighter skin, type of hair, shape of nose, height, etc. The limitations of the 5 races system is obvious when we see people of Middle Eastern origin classified as white. It’s obvious we need to add many other racial types/S or better yet use genetics to understand the long journey of Human Evolution.
Whatever you want? Not like it matters.
Hi (American here) – you can be and are both white and you’re Hispanic.
You’re born in Spain, no amount of melanin (or lack there of) will take away the fact that you’re Hispanic.
You would not be latino/na because you’re not from a latin american country.
In general, your skintone has nothing to do with being hispanic- but people might make assumptions. I think now a days for forms where they need specific information they have options such as “white hispanic” on the list which pretty much doesn’t need to be there for 99% of things unless they’re doing demographic based studies or looking for possible genetic illnesses that might be more/less likely depending on the genes of the individual.
Check off “hispanic” on forms no matter what, anybody who wants to argue with you based off your skin is either racist or misinformed.
And now we see why ethnicity such a stupid concept.
You would be considered “white Hispanic.”
You should not care about such things.
Typically on forms, they have one question that asks if you’re hispanic or latino, and then a separate question that asks your race/ethnicity, with hispanic or latino being one of the choices. Although it’s ambiguous, you can say yes to the first question since you speak Spanish, while the second question is more referring to people who are Mestizo, since that is the overwhelming majority of Spanish speakers here.
I think you would be Hispanic- White- not Latino, sometimes white and Hispanic are mutually exclusive for some reason but usually they’re separate so you could be white/ not Hispanic or Hispanic but not white
Many americans would consider you white caucasian. Many others would not consider you white. There is a lot of racist people who dont consider people from iberia or italy or greece to be white.
You are Hispanic and you are white. Hispanic isn’t a race.
Spanish-American here. You are white hispanic.
To ignorant people, a Spanish last name is automatic non- white. Even if you looked like Cameron Diaz or Canelo.
You’d be both: white and Hispanic. You would NOT be Latino though, if that helps!
Yes.
“Race” isn’t real. There is no internal consistent logic. Obviously it’s all contextually based. One cop pulls you over and they may see you as white. Another cop pulls you over and they may see you as Hispanic. It might be their mood, or their history, or how long or short your beard or hairdo is.
Race isn’t real so there’s no real answer to be given
What ever you feel like calling yourself. It will literally only come up in demographic questionnaires.
You’ll hear “Oh, I didn’t know that, but you’re one of the good ones, so it doesn’t matter” a lot.
Actually, it does matter. Asshole.
uh, hard to say, but generally speaking, given the way people have been going over here, they’d be racist and say you’re white (Yay for morons on the left…. /s if anyone thinks i’m legitimately celebrating their audacity)
An actual American would just see you either as Spanish or American (if you become a citizen). Otherwise just view you as human.
I think the word Hispanic has evolved to refer to Latin Americans and their descendants.
https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/09/12/who-is-hispanic/
I have to ask people their demographic information for my job every day. You are both, ethnicity is “Hispanic” and race is “white.” When I ask people who are Hispanic this (ask ethnicity first) and then follow up with race they often are confused and don’t know what to answer (as they should be it’s kind silly how it’s separated imo)
It doesn’t matter ICE will ship you off to El Salvador either way. Best to stay in Europe. Russia West is a dangerous place right now.
Does it really matter?
Is your name Joe, or Jose?
Hispanic = Caribbean Islands and such
Latino = mainland
Spanish = Spain
Both. You’re white but you come from a Spanish-speaking country which makes you Hispanic.
White colonizer.
On a census youre actually supposed to day hispanic because spain is the one european country that doesnt count as caucasian for political reasons. However its really going to depend on how white looking you are how people treat you
You check the Hispanic non Latino box like myself
Standard EEO job applications will list 2 option: Hispanic or Not Hispanic.
Upon clicking, it opens up the race options.
It’s specifically made to ensure Hispanics or Latinos are represented fairly and not bucketed in as Caucasian.
Companies of course always have the work around to institutionalize racism simply by seeing the person included 2 last names. It’s always a recommendation to use your first name and father’s last name on all applications, social media like LinkedIn so that there’s at least a tiny chance to avoid companies blocking latino or Hispanic hires.
Hispanic means “speaks Spanish”.
As a person from Spain, one could presume that you speak Spanish. Therefore, you are Hispanic.
White and Hispanic both, not either/or. You’ll see when you fill out a census form.
Mexican is a nationality, not a race or ethnicity. By definition, you’re literally Hispanic.
In the US according to the US census website you are White.
Yes you can be all three.
Bigger question: what does it mean to be “considered white” or “considered hispanic?” Like they hand you either a bottle of ketchup or valentina when you enter the country or what?
You could say caucasians have historical genetic ties to Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia; while Hispanic is more of a cultural heritage.
I would consider both terms as outdated or inaccurate, but the common perception is that “white” would be more race focused; while Hispanic would be more like where you were born, raised, and learned your first language.
Argentinians look very European in some cases, having blonde hair as well, but they are considered latino since its in latin america
Hispanic means “Spanish speaking”. That’s why in demographics questions in the US, it’s a separate question to race. You can be white and Hispanic, black and Hispanic, and so on.
A couple of Catalan friends moved to Atlanta. They were put in the “Mexican” box early on and they really weren’t happy about that.
White as race is skin color.
Ethnicity is Hispanic .
Which is why there are Hispanic whites in America.
You are Hispanic to them
Both
Id need a photo to determine
La respuesta es que nos consideran Hispanic, lo cual gracias a la discriminación positiva nos ayudaría a conseguir becas y trabajo en ciertos sectores woke a pesar de ser más blancos que un vampiro de Chernobil.
Just dropped in to say that I have no idea. Given recent events, I guess it is now how you identify yourself.
I’m a greek / spanish mutt, and im white. I consider myself greek, because i am, just lighter than most
It doesn’t matter just get in the ICE van.
I would consider you a…person.
Maybe not according to Trump and Stephen Miller
Both, I believe
Hispanic white. Same as any white looking person from another Hispanic country. For example in job forms, you would put yourself as white, and then there’s a separate question for some reason that asks if you’re hispanic or not. But honestly I doubt anyone cares and you can put what you want.
Depends what you look like. Not being a dick.
White hispanic
The word Hispanic kind of got morphed in the US to basically mean Mexican people or anyone brown speaking Spanish. Yeah it’s pretty messed up. But technically speaking a person from Spain would be Hispanic and European white.
Actually, many Hispanics are considered white in the US. Being Hispanic is more of a cultural category, it has nothing to do with race.
European
On Reddit? Shit, they’ll probably say you’re racist.
“Ethnically ambiguous”?
You’d be considered white since you’re European. In the U.S., Hispanic is used almost exclusively to refer to a Latin American with mostly Native American and a little European mixed in
Your race is white, your ethnicity is Hispanic. If a government form asks if you’re either white or Hispanic, you can mark both.
So you are white, and YOU say you are white…. doesn’t that mean you’re white?
all Hispanics are latino, but not all latinos are hispanic
if people know you’re from europe you’re white by technicality but people are going to assume you’re from latin america
My father is peruvian. My mother is italian. I was born in the USA. I would be hispanic and latino descendant and white correct?
I am from latin america and white, and I immigrated to the US.
I speak english with an accent and most americans believe I’m from somewhere in europe, so ig in the eyes of americans I am considered “european”.
It’s just a bit difficult for americans to imagine that there are white latinos. It just doesn’t fit in their worldview, since they believe every latino looks like the typical brown mexican immigrant.
Whenever I fill out paperwork and they ask me for my ethnicity, I usually select both “white / caucasian” and “hispanic or latino”, which is the truth, and brings me some DEI benefits 🙂
Both. White is a race on Census forms, and Hispanic is an ethnicity. Race and ethnicity are two different questions on the Census.
Are your eyes brown? Hair & eyebrows black? Do you speak English with a Spanish accent? It your answer is yes to all, then in the US you might automatically be seen as Hispanic.
Depends how pale you look. Race is a construct of the human imagination and nobody knows anything about history.
It depends on your skin tone. Im a pale Mexican, thanks to Spain, it’s a drawback from my genetics. My family has been here for generations. In the Winter and early spring they consider me white but Spring to fall it’s “You need to move back to where ya came from!” It really is that stupid.
According to US demographic categorizations you are a white hispanic. Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race in the US.
Their definition is nonsense. I’m white but have 0% DNA originating from the Caucasus (that’s eastern Europe, western Asia)
Op. Are you worried about it?
You are already both Hispanic and white. Hispanic people are people from countries related to Spain or speak Spanish. It is really likely Americans would confuse you for a Latino person.
I’m Portuguese-Canadian and actually get mistaken as looking Arabic quite a bit…
My mother was born in Madrid. My father was born in London. I was born in states and I hate the Hispanic question. I have marked Hispanic before and people give me the double look, and say to me that I don’t look Hispanic.
Here in the states, most Americans I have encountered do not know what Spain means . For Hispanic, it applies regionally, for instance, here in California, Hispanic usually means Central America and mostly Mexico. In Florida, it means Cuban.
It is absolutely incredible at some of the questions I have been asked. For example, do they eat tacos in Spain? Does they speak Spanish in Spain? And lastly, where in Mexico is Spain?
But then at work, people have protested me from joining a Hispanic group, since Spaniards are considered a colonizer.
It is quite confusing here.
Both! On our demographic forms, there’s typically an ethnicity section (are you Hispanic or not Hispanic) and a race section (black, white, Asian, etc.). You generally have to choose one of each, so you would say yes to Hispanic and white for race
“Hispanic” is a complicated category, and it might be helpful for you knowing that in statistics, they usually specifically have a category “Hispanic, not white” as well as “Hispanic, white” and “Hispanic, Black” and “All Hispanic”
Depends on how white you are. I have met plenty of Spanish who were white (nordic) and plenty who were not white but referred to themselves as white, so it depends how you look like.
