Everywhere I turn, people are calling Expedition 33 the best game ever made. It’s being crowned GOTY already, months before awards season. I keep seeing people say the music is transcending their soul, the level design is so brilliant that it makes them tear up, and the whole thing is apparently some deeply emotional, life-changing experience.
Personally, I don’t get it. Yes, the game is good. It looks great, plays smoothly, and clearly has a lot of polish. But nothing about it feels groundbreaking or game changing to me. It’s a well-executed game that checks all the boxes, but for me, it’s just that: well-executed. Not revolutionary.
The story is being hyped as incredible, but I’ll admit I haven’t finished it yet. Still, from what I’ve seen so far, it’s decent, not mind blowing. Same goes for the voice acting. Everyone keeps saying it’s best in class or some of the best ever, but honestly? It just sounds typical. Professional and clean, sure, but not remarkable in any way that stands out to me.
It feels like this game has become internet hype fuel. Once a few people started calling it a masterpiece, the wave just kept growing. Now, every tiny detail is treated like genius. In my opinion, a lot of it is overblown. People seem desperate to turn every good game into a generation-defining event these days, and I think Expedition 33 is the latest victim of that cycle.
It’s a good game. That should be enough. But no, according to the internet, it’s apparently the second coming of gaming. I’m just not seeing it.

tldr
“Best video game” is entirely subjective.
This happens every year, for me when BG3 won game of the year I didn’t get it, its not a bad game, its pretty good, but I thought far better games came out that year. I still have problems with BG3, but perhaps regular DnD has me to spoiled to really enjoy it.
Sometimes people will praise stuff you dont like. It happens.
I agree completely.
Clair Obscure: a game made by 30 people with 10-30 mln.
vs
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: a game made by major software house with 250-350 mln.
No need to explain futher
I mean I think both things are true….
It’s an amazing game on every level. I can’t say enough good about it… it is my GOTY so far but we’re also only finishing up month 4 and have 7 more to go (usually GOTY doesn’t count December). So there lots of time to go and the people who are already screaming that if this doesn’t win GOTY then it’s unfair are just showing their bias and that they aren’t being fair about it.
And while I love it there are lots of people who are going so overboard with the hype acting like it’s impossible to dislike it or you’re a troll, acting like no game could ever be better, and just overall overhyping it.
I am curious how it’s remembered in a year once the newness wears off.
This post is the first time I’ve heard of it .
Imo it isn’t even close to being as good as KCD2.
For people like me who love turned based JRPGs, 33 is peak gaming for me. I wish there were more 3D turn based party games like this for me to play with a great soundtrack, great story and pacing.
I’m looking forward to trying it tbh, seems to be the talk of the town as of late.
It captured me with the baguette costumes.
I’m a simple woman.
Gameplay is fun but repetitive, enjoy the mechanic built in so combat is more than directly turn based. Soundtrack is good but doesn’t always line up with what is happening. Especially during combat.
Haven’t gotten far enough in the game to have an opinion on the story other than to say that things aren’t explained very well at least up to the point I am at in the game.
Overall, very polished, pretty but nothing revolutionary
It’s just nice to have a fun game without any bullshit
Okay EA not fooling me.
It’s a solid 8/10. I believe the hype is largely due to it being the first game of a small company. A similar thing is happening with the movie Sinners.
It’s a good thing though, because hopefully it’ll serve as a wake up call to big game studios as to what players really want.
Looks like steampunk Final Fantasy, eww. Keep it haha. If I wanted these aesthetics, I would just replay Bioshock Infinite again.
How far are you currently into the story? (This will help clarify a lot)
For me, its was the “show don’t tell” part of the world building that hooked me and I was astonished how much I cared about the characters after such a short time with them. The sound track also helps carry a lot of the emotional scenes
If a game opens with some long-winded lore dump like: “One hundred years ago, the Calamity occurred and the Knights of Ni… blahblahblah…” I instantly tune out.
I’ve read a lot of sci-fi/fantasy and played an assload of games in my time. If you’ve got an interesting world, don’t hesitate to just drop me into it and let the environment and characters do the storytelling. That’s super rare these days, and my favorite fictional works seem to do this well. (I’m thinking Stormlight Archive as an example of world building by just dropping you in and letting you figure out wtf a “Spren” or “Gommage” is from contextual clues alone).
I’ll take some recommendations because I’m looking for new games and just wasted money on oblivion.
I don’t recall a better told story with as as many twists and turns. Run flawlessly, less than $50 and it delivers some of the best visuals and music in the industry. The art style is familiar but still beautiful.
made by 31 people and 2 dogs. There is so much love and passion in this game which all these AAA’s are missing. Noco and Monoco are the names of the studio owners dogs. Put them on the company payroll as ‘happiness managers’ so they can say they had 33 employees at launch. The dogs have their own play room in the manor. Adorable shit. Stuff like this doesn’t come around often. We don’t just love the game but the studio behind it.
Finish the story, if you still feel that way, i’ll accept this opinion
Haven’t played it, but I’ve watched a lot of gameplay footage.
It looks fun and I look forward to trying it myself but I do agree the amount of praise it’s getting seems a wee bit overblown compared to what I’ve seen.
I don’t think the game was on many people’s radars so having this well-polished release take people by surprise without any exaggerated hype attached to it did a lot to make a good first impression. I think it will be looked at more critically a few months from now though.
In most aspects, it is a great game, but I wouldn’t call it a 10/10 masterpiece. It has a lot of polish, but some areas are clearly cut corners, perhaps due to time or financial constraints
For the most part, for the average person who doesn’t care much for all the side content, they will encounter very few issues
The Active Turn Based Combat system is not new. The first time I saw this myself was in Paper Mario TTYD. Exp 33 executes this well (minus the tutorials) but as you said, it’s not “ground breaking” as some people are saying. It’s just their spin on the formula
20 hrs in and loving it, despite a few flaws
I’d rather gatekeep shitty games than gatekeep good games.
Most gamers have terrible taste.

This opinion has no substance to it. You keep bringing up a point and then saying you disagree without saying why or giving alternative examples of a good version of it. It sounds like you’re hating just to hate
Who said it has to be revolutionary to be great?
Thats nice. You’re wrong, but that is nice.
Context I think makes a huge impact here. It’s a really genuinely good game. But a story driven, beautiful game that’s well done, looks so much more groundbreaking against a backdrop of rehashed, rushed, micro transactional, overhyped triple A games. The fact that it was also cheaper than many of those games only serves to further emphasize that difference. Is it the best game ever? Nah. Is it terrific value and a solid story with well thought out mechanics? Absolutely.
I think people hype it up because it’s exactly what you said. It’s a good game and that’s it. It’s not a buggy mess, there’s no early access, there no MTX, there’s no manipulation.
Like they made a triple A product in terms of polish as 33 people who just love games. We are in a time where if you want a triple A experience you have to jump through the hoops of MTX, FOMO, Gambling, whatever else.
It shows that hey indie games aren’t just tiny pixelated games anymore. They can be just as good.
And that in return can shake up the industry if this keeps happening which is amazing.
Plus again it’s a GREAT game
I agree and most the hype I read about it is how good the music is lol like c’mon this game is so great and all you can talk about is the music? Game is good not great imo
