The fact that some pets can dream means there exists a version of us in their minds that is made of what they can perceive from us, which is different from what we recognize as us but it’s not less legitimate.

One day, when we are long dead from whatever horror we unleash up on ourselves, there will exist evolved cats and dogs that worship us like a religion
To your dog you are mostly legs and a specific smell

Do humans sound like Charlie Brown adults in pet brains?
I know this is a showerthought but it is a super cognitively significant. The central thesis of I Am a Strange Loop essentially concludes (to the extent that it concludes) the same.
If you find this topic interesting, definitely give it a read!
Struggling to grasp this one. Is it just saying “perception isn’t reality but it’s valid”? Or “perception differs from perceiver to perceiver”?
Getting pseudophilosophy vibes but maybe I’m just dense.
And in some of those dreams we will talk to them fluently in their language
You think the version they dream of can understand them and talk to them?

I’m now imagining myself as a combo heated body pillow/food dispenser.
Every mind has a different version of everything that is different from every mind, human and otherwise. I don’t think a single human has the actual same perception of the world as another human.
Your dogs dream version of you is not a legitimate perception of you wtf are you talking about? Any animal that sleeps also dreams. Human dreams are a garbled mess of feelings and visuals already, a dogs dream would be nothing more that fleeting feelings and reactions, their brains literally can’t form a picture of your face until they actually see it, they arent that advanced.
I guess this is a true shower thought because its garbled nonsense
Such a beautiful thought, our pets carry a little dream-version of us in their hearts.
So, if my dog dreams of me, does that mean I’m a superhero in his mind? I hope I at least have a cape and not just the smell of last night’s pizza
How are you guys making new posts but I can’t? Sometimes I don’t understand Reddit and I wish there was another website I could use damn place has a monopoly on the internet.
Your dogs dreaming about chasing down prey, not about you.
I know dogs dream and chase and kick etc but has anyone seen their cat do so?
how is this any different from realizing the same thing about the people we know?
My parrot used to talk in his sleep when he was younger so I actually kind of got to see how he views me from his perspective! He would repeat phrases that I often said to him, a lot of baby talk, there was even back and forth between what he would say and what I would say in his dream. He looked so happy smiling in his sleep while he dreamt
I wonder if my dog’s idea of me is more based around what i smell like? I certainly remember what my dog smells like, but it’s not the first thing that comes to mind when i picture my dog.
yeah, it kind of messes with me. like, pets have experiences they think about later. that means they remember, feel stuff, maybe even miss things. makes me treat them with more care honestly
That’s a beautiful thought. Their version of us might be simpler or more instinctual, but it’s still real and meaningful, maybe even more pure than how we see ourselves.
Yes, pets and animals
perceive us differently,
imagine, and dream of us differently
from how we actually exist.
Same as how deaf and blind people.
perceive us.
Congratulations on having a profound
and existential realization.
Now, I’m waiting for when you realize,
everyone perceives others differently.
That’s why,…
no one point of view is correct!
One thing I have learned about dreams is never to make any assumptions. My dreams never, ever include anyone I know or any place I have actually been to. All scenes are unique, complicated, detailed and involve actions/scenarios that I have never experienced.
I wonder how animals perceive us in their dreams
So, my dog thinks I’m a giant treat dispenser with questionable fashion sense? At least I know I’m living my best life in his dreams!
I sometimes worry that my dog thinks I intentionally kick her on the stairs in the dark. And I hope the head pats afterwards make up for it!
I want to be the version of me that my dog sees me as.
That means somewhere, in a warm little brain, there’s a blurry dream-version of you
not who you think you are, but who you feel like to them.
You exist in their world as comfort, as scent, as sound.
You’re a god made of belly rubs and snacks. That’s real as it gets.
