kids should swear

r/

If we teach children that swearing is childish and ridiculous, then after a few generations, if we’re lucky, only kids will swear because it will be seen as something immature.

I never understood what was wrong with the word swear.

This and the post you were referring to both appeared RIGHT NEXT TO EACHOTHER, RIGHT AT THE START OF MY FEED.

I agree with the main opinion, but I disagree with the reasoning. I think kids should swear because it’s funny as all get out.

  5. Strawberri-Bliss Avatar

Honestly I get this. Parents raise their kids saying it’s a word children shouldn’t say, and since they’re adults they say it. When kids go through that trying to be older phase they use it like they’re brand new to it (which they are)

I’m not sure if I understand the body of your post but I agree with the subject because it is very often quite funny.

I have tried to teach my son that the meaning of his words is important not just the words. Also that in certain social situations and hierarchies some things aren’t appropriate. Like when he’s with his teachers or Grandma there’s appropriate and then when he’s with his friends other things may be appropriate.

I also don’t really care for double standards so have found a workaround. I told him freedom of speech kicks in when you start paying your taxes and when he’s that old he can do what he wants lol.

Anyways, he’s a good kid and I let him push the boundaries a little as long as he remains respectful.

Swearing is stress relieving. As long as it’s not overdone or used against someone I think it should be ok. I’m mixed on this opinion. I think kids start swearing because they want a reaction out of the grown-ups.

People who think swearing is offensive have a place in society. If there were no pearl-clutchers, swearing wouldn’t be the same. But man that does NOT make it any easier to deal with people having an emotional response to something as simple as a word. You have a place in society. You can fulfill that role- just do it away from me, my word..

A post in reaction to another is not an unpopular opinion

Kids shouldn’t swear for two reasons

1.) Despite what some may think swearing is a varied and nuanced form of communication. Muttering “shit” when I stub my toe is vastly different than calling someone a “shit head” to their face and also different to coming out of the bathroom saying with a smile “man I just took the BIGGEST shit you’d ever seen.” Kids don’t understand this nuance and this spectrum of the uses of swearing so as such they’re ill equipped to differentiate the differences in the use of the same word and how it can be light hearted in one light and a terrible insult in another.

2.) More importantly swearing at school gets you in trouble

edit: also as a parent of a 10 year old I can assure you some kids do swear, like sailors

My kid is allowed to swear when he gets his drivers license.

My children are allowed to cuss at home. There is no such thing as a bad word.

My sister punishes her kids for cussing, and it’s considered inappropriate for them to do.

Her kids cuss constantly and giggle about it everywhere.
My kids barely ever cuss, even at home.

(Slurs are completely different, and I taught mine that Slurs are directly harmful to people and not allowed. It’s intent. My kids do not use Slurs. My sister’s kids call each other F words and say the N word constantly. )

Kids have some of the most foul mouths around. It’s just they know how to behave around adults

Idk if was not allowed to swear as a kid and I talk like a sailor.

But that assumes swearing is bad and should be socially shunned and weeded out.

I thought we’d reached the point where enough quality studies show the benefits of swearing (e.g. to pain threshold) that we accept it as a social good now.

  22. Alarming_Bar7107 Avatar

Who decided there’s a hierarchy of words? Crap is worse than poop but shit is worse than crap? Same with darn, dang, and damn. It’s ridiculous imo

  23. Old-Show9198 Avatar

What’s wrong with swearing? It’s authentic and part of human emotions. It’s not called for in every situation but if you don’t swear I don’t trust you.

  24. lVloogie Avatar

Swearing is a great expression of language. Idk how you think people will just stop swearing if kids are doing it. Farting is still hilarious.

  25. hobbesdream Avatar

Yeah to piggyback off this, we shouldn’t censor swears ever

  26. AddressEffective1490 Avatar

I am deeply uncomfortable around adults who are uncomfortable around swearing.

  27. DamonOfTheSpire Avatar

    You including slurs in this?

  28. SXAL Avatar

You’re missing the whole point of swearing. Swearing needs to be present, but it also needs to be taboo. When you swear in the moment of pain or an extreme situation, swearing counts as an act of breaking a taboo, giving you a small adrenaline release that helps you deal with the situation. So, if the adults don’t swear, they don’t have that instrument anymore. And if swearing isn’t tabooed, it loses it’s power.

  29. TargetMaleficent Avatar

Its already seen as immature, and yet adults still swear.

  30. LucidSoulDream Avatar

Yes they should, but tell them weird swearwords.
Like Rhododendron for example. Swearing is letting out emotion, it’s a good thing in certain situations. Like when you hit your tiny toe. Let them swear a shard as they like and it will releave some pain. If you teach them Rhododendron is a not very neat word, they can all harmlessly swear when they need to.
You can also pick another word. It doesn’t really matter. As long as it is not commenly used and the kids don’t know the meaning.

  31. PlanetLandon Avatar

Why the fuck would you want to get rid of swearing?

  32. fugineero Avatar

I teach my kids that swearing is for stupid people who are too lazy to find more appropriate words.

  33. satinsateensaltine Avatar

Swearing is a natural part of every language. It’s not uncouth or something we should be getting rid of. It’s about using it in the right scenarios.
