Meeting people IRL has turned into offline social meadia

r/

They just want to use the opportunity to brag about something and everything. Even forcefully so.

Met some some friends over the weekend. The conversations were something like:

“Oh, what a beautiful bird!”

“Yeah, I saw one just like it when we went to Dubai, it was just near the 5 star hotel we were staying at, i almost choked on my caviar when I saw it.”

This forces others to try to top that, or confirm they went to Dubai themselves and so it turns into a disgusting, fake dick measuring contest.

It’s almost impossible to have a real conversation anymore.

Holy shit, if there are already people who say RL feels like offline Social Media, what has the world turned into?

You need new freinds. There’s so many different type of people on this earth. Just stay away from the material competition ones

You’re hanging out with the wrong people I guess, I feel like r/rant would be better for this

The real opinion should be “I have fake friends”

My friends are nothing like this, we love sharing our experiences with one another.

Bro. Just get new friends. Or keep them and add more friends. I don’t have this problem at all.

Looks like you need new friends ,

Uh, that’s damn near every post on social media.

That’s the dumbest take I’ve read today. This is a friends problem not a society one

I went to Dubai would end a conversation with me… I just learned all I need to know about who you are… that’s when you 1 up them with dumb shit to make them feel small and insignificant.

Oh you went to Dubai… I prefer to go to places that are less material with rich cultural heritage for me to enlighten myself within… you know really shed all the negativity from capitalist driven western polluted societies like Dubai so focused on wealth… so I went to Afghanistan and from there to Columbia.

It’s completely untrue… they will feel insecure and if they’re stupid enough they’ll go there to keep up with you… and if you’re really lucky they’ll become a statistic and you’ll never have to speak to them again.

A lot of us don’t want to bring up anything we’ve done, like trips or whatever, but we’ve gotten much much worse at small talk since the pandemic. And I have fuck-all going on in my life except the random too-expensive stuff I’ve paid to do/see/go to recently. So it’s just a piss-poor way to try and connect and relate to your story.

It sucks. 🙁 The world kind of has changed…

Uhm… I haven’t had friends trying to one-up me since I was 12. I think you just need new people lol.

Lol where the fuck are you meeting people??

Where do you think “social media” got it from?

Tall tales have been a genre of bullshit about as old as written language, and it only stops there because we can’t trace it back any further.

Assuming you’re not into reading hieroglyphics about how Rameses picked up a lion by the tail and beat it against the ground like Hulk Vs. Loki, I recommend the autobiography of Marco Polo for a start.

I have a co worker that does exactly this, but maybe it’s because I work in sales haha. If anyone is talking about a vacation they just got back from, or in the midst of planning one, she always has to “one up” and speak up. It’s a competition for her, she needs to be the one who is the most traveled. It’s gotta be exhausting at some point

2 ways to go around this

    1. Keep asking for more details about their trip, eventually you will land on something bad from there conversation becomes healthy, did with my friends, now they stick to normal behaviour, and even if they want to flex, they do it directly…like i went to dubai last week, which is far better than i saw this bird when i was in dubai
    2. Make new friends 🙂
