I wasnt sure where to post this honestly but I thought some people here might find it interesting.
I also wasnt sure if this counted for NSFW since it talks about medical procedures so I tagged it like that just in case!
I (27M) had open heart surgery a little over a week ago, its my second surgery, my first at 4. I have tetraology of fallot technically but my case is quite severe. Both surgeries ended being more complicated and twice as long as initially planned. Both surgeries, because of how long my chest cavity was open, swelled a lot so they couldnt immediately suture me back up and had to wait for the swelling to go down. In both cases I was in a medically induced coma. When I was 4, it went on longer bc I was crash everytime they took the breathing tube out so that was prolonged.
This recent surgery, I was in a 3 day coma. And i was supposed to be totally dead to the world. But I wasnt. I was conscious, I heard the doctors, my parents, the nurses. I felt them suctioning liquid from around my breathing tube, I felt the quick wipe down a nurse gave me, I heard my sister on the phone with my mom (she tried to let me hear her but the doctors said i couldnt, i was screaming about how wrong they were in my mind), I saw the doctors when they were checking for pupil dialation, i felt them put goop (lube? eye drop stuff?) in my eyes but couldnt move my pupils. No one knew i was alert, there was nothing on my vitals that indicated it, and when I woke up and started recounting everything, the doctors, and my folks, grew more and more horrified.
The administration gave me an in person apology and told me she was launching a full scale investigation into how this might have happened.
I havent been able to find too many other experiences like this for medically induced comas, mostly brain injury ones? Anyway, thought it was interesting and wanted to share.

I had a shrapnel removal surgery a few years ago that I was awake but unable to move and felt everything. The anesthesiologist used an expired medication without realizing it. Last surgery I will ever let the veterans administration do on me. Had the other since all private hospitals. It’s a horrible feeling I never want to repeat.
Could you still feel? I can’t imagine how it would have felt if you did. Clearly the doctor thinks this is preventable/a mistake so I wonder what it could be that causes this.
Hope you’re feeling better now!
I’m so sorry OP. What was ur mental state during the time? Were you reasonably sure you would wake up eventually? Are coma’s common with your surgery?
For how much of the total three days were you conscious?
I mean, did you not have periods of sleep?
That sounds hellish.
Seems like a stupid question but : could you sleep?
Either you process drugs too fast or there is a drug addict on staff who is stealing drugs. Sometimes when that happens the addict manages to spread Hepatitis or HIV you might want to ask for prophylactic therapy or they might want to test you at the appropriate time
