This is more of a personal question as someone who lives in San Diego County but resides at the City of Chula vista in San Diego County. When I think of San Diego I think of the county. But I understand that San Diego is also a city in which people may refer to as “San Diego.” I was wondering if I can get your opinions on the matter.

I don’t think anyone outside of San Diego has any opinions on this
San Diego is just a city to me. I’ve never visited US, so of course my knowledge is very basic. But I have no idea how counties work in the US, how they are named, etc.
I guess its the same as asking you what do you think first when you hear “Vilnius”? Is it a capital of Lithuania or Vilnius county? 😂
Nobody outside of San Diego county knows there’s such a county as San Diego county. Don’t take it personally; nobody knows there’s a Los Angeles county either.
I don’t think a lot of Europeans think of San Diego as anything other than a city, as counties are barely relevant to us (some people might know Orange County from popular culture, but others…).
It’s kind of the same thing as if I ask you, if you think of Zurich as a city or as a canton (~state).
UK. I’m vaguely aware that the US has counties, but never think about them.
I’m referring to the city of course.
Now a question for you: when you refer to “London” are you talking about the City of London, everything within the Congestion Charge zone or everything within the M25?
Wait, are you really telling me you’ve never thought about this?
From Scotland, but used to visit San Diego a lot. I think it depends on context. If I was going to Chula Vista I would tell people here “San Diego” just as I would say “Edinburgh” to Americans instead of my home town.
I think its absolutely normal to refer to the city. That is by far the most famous of the two.
In the same way..if someone tells me they are going to visit Palermo (where I live) I would always assume they were coming here,to the city. Not to Partinico or Cefalu.
I think of the city. I think (!) most Europeans aren’t aware of and don’t really care about counties at all. We know states and cities but the rest is not really relevant usually
Please tell me you’re not serious about your question. Every city in the world has counties that no one is ever thinking about. When talking about a city name, we think about the city, not the administrative area that it belongs to. If it’s a city in a foreign country, we don’t even know how the administration has been set up and wouldn’t be interested in it either.
When I talk with people elsewhere, I say I live in Stockholm, but I actually don’t. I live in the county of Stockholm (meaning inside the Greater Stockholm), but I do not live in the city of Stockholm. I live in a municipality outside the city. No one is interested in this distinction, though. Saying Stockholm is enough. Everyone will treat me as a Stockholmer, even people elsewhere in Sweden who would know better. Still, locally, I use the term of being the resident of the municipality and not Stockholm.
Which of the dozen of places called San Diego you mean? 😉
I’m very rarely speaking about San Diego so this doesn’t matter to me at all.
It’s one of those places where if I was close anyway I’d go to the zoo, but I wouldn’t specifically travel to the place itself.
The city. I was not even aware there is a country by the same name.
Someone from Chula vista in my eyes would be from, well, chula vista, not san diego. as they are not from the city san diego.
same like when someone talks about berlin, they mean the city berlin, not the federal state berlin in which the city berlin is in.
