This is something that is genuinely baffling to me.
I live half a mile from the hood and the grocery store I go to is frequented by a lot of poor people, a lot of black people but also some immigrants. Almost universally it seems that this is the only group of people who a) continues to wear cloth or blue medical masks in public; and also b) very broadly wears the mask on their chin.
In my city this is almost completely nonexistent among other groups. Sure there is a very small group of white people or Asians who still mask, but at this point if you’re masking you’re probably wearing the n95 / n99s and wearing them properly.

Living in a country without universal healthcare and they can’t afford to get sick?
i’ve been wearing a mask for my allergies. i’ll pull it down indoors.
maybe they’re like me, idk.
You could ask them
It hit poor communities the hardest and they remember it.
Did you ask? How many of those black ppl do u think are actually on this sub? We don’t all share a brain so we can’t speak for the black ppl u saw do something. We wouldn’t know. You ask this question in the black sub and didn’t get an answer so then you moved it here lol. How would anyone here know? U just wanted to create a racist cesspool troll. I hope u crash
It’s really a weird commentary on social issues. From my observation black people would never be seen with a mask at first and now they won’t give them up.
Pulling the mask down (covering mouth but not nose) makes it much less effective but more comfortable, a compromise.
It also lets people see your face, which is especially good in neighborhoods afraid of violent criminals.
Are they doing this in stores and on public transportation or just when they are outside and transitioning to these spaces?
I think many of them probably still have residual memories of being berated for not wearing a mask when it was required. Now they aren’t taking any risks, and want to be ready to comply as may be needed. Brown and other marginalized people in this country tend to not want to draw negative attention from authorities in our current environment.
I remember when schools dropped the masking requirement, some students did this same thing, wearing masks but not over their nose and mouth. This is what I eventually figured out: Someone in their family felt very strongly that they should still wear a mask, but they personally didn’t want to. So they had to keep it on, but as soon as they left sight of that family member, they pulled it down. They wore it correctly at home.
It’s weird I only noticed this when I started working at a school. Never covers the nose. Always wearing 2 sweatshirts and sweatpants no matter the weather.
Churches and community centers in minoritized populations push it. The chin shit is just malicious compliance. White people couldn’t stand the inconvenience. Covid disproportionally hit the poor. If you don’t have any PTO, you can’t take a sick day.
Seems like they’re wearing it as an accessory, not a medical device. Maybe like a status symbol or to make a statement – like a lot of clothing options.
It’s not really surprising, since fashion frequently reflects what’s going on in the world. Look at how popular military-style clothing has been since the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan. Even big name brands (Versace etc) sell desert cammo style boots. People not in combat, walking around in combat boots.
Remember when people wore one glove, a la Michael Jackson? What good is one glove? It’s as useful as a mask on your chin.
Maybe to show their face? A lot of businesses want faces seen for cameras now.
Rappers started wearing balaclavas. Face masks started being a symbol of intimidation in hood culture. It’s a drill music scene thing.
This indeed a stupid question. With all that is going on in that country that’s what you’re concerned about? You can always ask them or are you scared because you know it’s an asinine question?
Yns fashion rn. It’s not for Covid reasons I’ll say that much.
If you’re poor how are you supposed to pay for medical expenses if you get sick?
You sound kinda racist ngl
Lots of “white” people still wear masks where I live
In america, y’all got a bird flu problem
The world is dealing with a measles outbreak , bird flu variants, and still different types of covid
I’ve noticed recently. A lot of people wearing masks, regardless of race or income.
Why people wear masks on their chin? I we’ll never understand that it defeats the whole purpose
Maybe because they want to be able to cover their faces when in close proximity to someone else, but don’t want to deal with having their mouths covered 100% of the time?
And just to mention about immigrants, there are other countries where it’s common to wear masks out in public to prevent disease spread.
Or maybe these people have other obligations that require them to wear a mask? You just said, you’re at the store. You don’t know their lives.
Asians wore masks before COVID, so there’s that. I wear a good filtered mask sometimes when the air quality is bad due to allergies.
Beard flu.
I love how positive and optimistic these response are, meanwhile, its just a publicly accepted face mask.
The kids put them up when they are stealing in stores and stuff. They can have it on around cameras it becomes harder to identify them. Its WAY less concerning to police than a skimask and much more breathable.
I’m guessing it’s a more discreet form of the Sheisty mask craze made popular by rappers.
Man idk why people trying to get upset 😂 yall be perfectly fine pointing why other races do the things they do but soon as someone ask about blacks yall wanna cry and get offended, black people in the hoods especially younger ones wear masks because they hiding their faces from their ops, targets and because they are imitating their favorite drill rapper. Stop fucking crying 😂
It’s normally so they can pull them up to prevent their faces being recorded. Often when committing crimes or protesting violently.
That’s my experience anyway. It might well be for a huge variety of reasons
Never forget a person’s minds capability to start noticing a pattern where one does not exist.
“Baige cars don’t exist.” Says one person, only to hear “Na,,they are all over the place, ones right over there.” And suddenly they start noticing bagie cars all over the place.
There was one stop light that ALWAYS got me. I neveranaged to get through that stoplight without catching it pretty much right before it turned. It was so unlikely I finally started to record how often it actually stopped me.
Once I started actually keeping track, turns out it was actually about 50-50.
You think “Blak people all seem to X” and now you are prepped to notice it every single time. But are you noticing the white/Hispanic/ etc people who are also doing it? Are you noticing the black people who aren’t?
Not saying it is or isn’t effective, but maybe it’s a situation where they are wearing it more as to not spread what they have vs. catching something.
If I have a cough, but not worried about breathing anything in, I don’t cover my nose. 🤷🏾♂️
Anytime you see youths wearing masks, is because they are up to no good.
It’s for the Ops lmao
