The UK government continues to fund the search for Madeleine McCann, the child who went missing in 2007.
While this was an awful incident and,as a parent myself I cant imagine how awful it must feel to have a child taken, it happened so long ago it should have become a cold case by now.
And yet, the UK government has given another £100k this year (over £13m since 2011) to continue this investigation.
While I know this is a drop in the pond in terms of government spending, it seems mad that money and staff are still being allocated to this investigation.

Bro you don’t understand
Shes white
Pretty much all police departments have a cold case department though, it’s not like they have a special Madeline McCann Department. I do kind of agree though: funding, and even media attention, for missing persons cold cases should be more evenly distributed among all sectors of the population not the white middle class missing people disproportionately represented compared to ethnic, sexual, gender diverse etc minorities, foster children in the public system, working class etc people who don’t get public press conferences or documentaries etc even if they are missing for years too. It’s so clear people are more invested in the privileged social majority and this treatment of missing persons is only compounding the issue.
Also, I think re. government funding, people like the McCanns can afford PIs and other experts themselves, people from lower socioeconomic brackets can’t. They can miss their loved one just as dearly but can’t afford — through no fault of their own — to fund an investigation, especially not long term. Obviously case by case, but I think missing persons from the latter category should be prioritised for funding when that is their only hope.
However, sometimes— as other commenters have pointed out — an investigation may be disproportionally funded not because of any personal traits of the victim/ missing person, but because they are believed to be the case that, if solved, will stand as the evidence needed to get a criminal put away. With dangerous criminals like the prime suspect with McCann, this can be a very high priority for a good reason so they can’t hurt anyone else.
I wouldn’t be surprised if 100k less of tourists money goes to Portugal and comes to the UK year on year, because of the disappearance being at a tourist hotspot. There’s probably revenue from other sources related to this case that also makes it an net positive economic investment for the UK overall.
There will be lobby groups made of the electorate who insist on this too.
Overall, it’s understandable. £100k a year is probably the price of 1 or 2 good investigators, and they probably add value in other areas other than just this case.
At this point, we might as well finish the job. We already have the dude that we are 99% sure this is the fucker that did it, and he is currently in a German prison, due to be released THIS year. Due to the investigation, they have finally gotten a hard drive that will probably go towards the evidence so we can hopefully keep this guy locked up.
It has cost a lot and taken way too long, but now we are in the final stretch. We might as well finish it instead of abandoning it and allowing the probable child murder back out on the streets
This isn’t unpopular, at least in the UK ..
When you look at how poor Kerry Needham literally sold every toy Ben had to try and raise enough money to stay in Greece it’s utterly infuriating that that slimy Gerry just had to make a few phone calls to his Masonic buddies and they had everyone falling over themselves to give them money, a literal press officer and everything else.
The fact that they managed to get the services of Carter Ruck on an almost indefinite free retainer still gets me to this day.
I certainly wouldn’t wish the loss of a child on any parent but they turned their loss into a fucking business venture and it stinks.
Rant over.
Drop in the pond? More like a drop in the Pacific ocean
It’s just the met police holiday fund
I raise you with a 34-year investigation here. McCann ain’t anything yet.
Cold cases do, however, generally not cost much and can have a great deal of success when new facts appear. One such case is this. The entire city and, most importantly, the families sure like that the police didn’t give up on it. I recommend the netflix shows for both of these cases.
I mean we all know something dodgy has gone on here right? RIGHT!?
I hate the fact that children go missing every day but the effort into searching for this one child is greater than the effort into finding the rest of the children smh
